Baby

Well, today's ultrasound showed an 8 lbs and 1 oz baby at less than 37 weeks. All this with a cervix that's showing no signs of being ready and the baby that has actually moved away from the exit, so to speak, in the recent weeks. Go figure. He is healthy, thank god, it's just the matter of how we are going to get him out now given his size and ( Read more... )

37 weeks is nothing, you got to wait till it's 40.
induction is being done on 41 week.
eat spicy thai soup every day!

They do induction earlier than 40 weeks with large fetuses and other conditions. Even the radiologist reading the US report said "they won't let you get to 40 weeks". I guess we'll see what my doc has to say.

Good luck! We discussed an induction with my doctor at my 38 weeks appointment, and my labor started later that day :)

He will be out, beleive me! Try to get some sleep, it is your last chance in the next year or so :)

Come on! Ultrasound is not a very good predictor of a baby's weight, and cervix not being ready at less than 37 weeks does not mean that it won't be ready at 40. As far as induction/episiotomy/c-sections go, nobody can predict this, even a doctor, so I would doubt your predictions. :)

According to the radiologist reading the US report, they won't let me be pregnant till 40 weeks and will want to induce. We'll see what my doc says. If the US is not a good predictor of baby's weight, what is?

Very strange. I don't think they ever determined the approximate weight of my baby by US. The doctor kind of estimated it during the exam (and was right). AFAIK, nothing is a really good predictor of the baby's weight, except the scale once it is born.
You may also go into labor before 40 weeks on your own.

See, this was not during the regular exam, this was at a radiologist's office - a separate appointment I had. The type of the ultrasound that you get at 20 weeks when they check for genetic abnormalities. They measure a bunch of different parameters and then let the computer analyze them and come out with an estimate. The radiologist said they are right on 100% of the time with average and small babies. With large babies there is a little more deviation potentially.

My son was born at day 5 after due day. So, 37 weeks in your case is too early. Do not rush. Baby will grow a little bit, but not 1 lbs/week. And I have read that ultrasound is not very accurate method to measure weight.

Good luck !

Half pound a week puts him at 9.5 lbs by due date. What would be a good way to predict baby's weight if not the US?

I do not believe in half pound per week as well at last stage. There are no room to move and grow, just maturation of lungs, intestines etc.

On my knowledge, there are no exact method to measure weight inside womb.

Due to potential problems if wait longer, we did an induction (and natural birth) at 36 weeks, without any problems. What are they waiting for?

well, yeah, if they don't know weight for sure, than I see that there is no reason to rush

How can you possibly know the weight of the baby for certain? And what do you use to predict if not the US? Either way, we'll see what my doc has to say Wednesday, I don't believe I'll be carrying all the way till the due date.
