air conditioners base price on size, but can be had for $120 for a small room unit. I woulddn't recommend a used one in that you won't know if it works until you get it hoe, plug it in, and sit in the wind eagerly awaiting cold air that may never come. Newer ACs are more efficient, use less electricity, and generally are a safer buy.
Outside that, my recommendation is open all the windows and doors at night, keep them open until just before sunrise, and close them all when you wake up, or around 5. If you have insulation, your house should stay nice and cool until late afternoon when things start to cool off. Also, make sure you can take advantages of breezes by opening up windows and doors in ordee, easiest way to determind how air wants to go, open the windows and close the doors in the rooms, then when you open, you'll feel a pull in some rooms, those will aid in cooling, leave those doors open :)

Best of luck, stay cool!

the side where the sun shines on the windows can be covered with something...
Sunlight can have a big impact on heat inside the house.

But other then that...
Don't really know :\

if you have fans, try pointing them outside (yes I know, that's where the cool air is) the key is to create a flow of air so that the temperature can regulate. For example, if you want to cool down your room, try putting the fan in your window, pointing outside and another fan in your doorway drawing air from the rest of the house to pass through.
Also try sleeping low to the floor, hot air tends to rise more than cooler air so the more cool air will likely be lower to the ground (though it may be a negligible difference in all honesty as far as you're concerned).
