a) Format your PC.
b) Have you recently used Pidgin? It used to crash all the time when adding new contacts for me, but after I updated it was 100% more stable.

If you're going to reformat, then reformat and re-install programs that you want. A reformat is 98% likely to fix whatever problem you're having.

If you do not wish to format then I suggest that you first update your windows to the most current version of your OS, then make sure the drivers for your network hardware are up to date, (I like to make sure my device drivers are up to date as a routine but specifically that might help with bouncy internet connections). Then uninstall all incarnations of whatever messenger program you want to use, then reinstall with the latest versions. If this does not fix your problem, it's likely A.) Some form of virus/bug B.) a Ghost (they happen .001% of the time) or C.) Hardware issues. If you still encounter problems reformat and then install again, if you still have the problems then it's a hardware issue.

I could be wrong, I'm no expert but that's what I'd do.

Sounds like you might just have a lot of cruft that builds up over time - various little pieces of adware or spyware or junk that hooks into your OS and slows things down as they get added in. Some of the messenger software is especially bad about sucking up your speed and performance, sadly. =/ I ONLY run one instance of Trillian on any of my machines, and even that by itself is a huge resource hog, but at least it ends up being the only one I need ( ... )
