Only speculation, but here goes:

he and his gal are breaking up, and she's giving the whole "let's still be friend's" spiel.

to him, because he still loves her, "friend" might as well be a four letter word, like "fuck". as in "fuck you, i'm leaving".

also, "friend" just represents the end of their relationship, hence the "end" reference.

he feels desperate, and wishes she would stay and say the words of love they used to, but she's being honest and it's breaking his heart.

I suppose I can see that. I understood the end thing, it was the four letter word thing that was getting me.
