here Clark stared at the phone for a little while, ignoring the broken spring in his mattress that tickled his lower back. Unfortunately, his powers didn’t include forcing it to ring.
Lex had been back for three days, and he hadn’t called.
When he heard the sound of his cell phone ringing, Clark jumped, and picked up the land line handset, staring at it insensibly for a moment until he recognised the Warrior Angel theme that Lex had loaded onto his phone one afternoon, and which usually made Clark smile each time Lex called him.
He found his cell under a pile of papers, and flipped it open. “Hi, Lex. How was the honeymoon?” he asked, hoping that he sounded relaxed rather than nervous as hell.
“It was lovely thank you, Clark,” a female voice answered.
Clark pulled the phone away from his ear to look at the screen again. The call was definitely coming from Lex’s penthouse.
“Lisbeth?” he asked.
“Of course,” she answered, sounding amused. “Now Clark, I hear you’ve been spending a lot of time with my maid of honour.”
“Um, yeah. Anna’s nice. I like her.” Clark stood up and started pacing the length of his tiny room.
“I’m glad,” Lisbeth responded warmly. “Now that we’re back in town, I insist that you and Anna come to dinner at the penthouse. Are you free on Friday?”
Clark was about to respond that no, he wasn’t free. Friday night was always spent with Lex, either going out, or sitting on the couch watching movies that weren’t released yet, or that had been released 20 years ago. But this was Lex’s wife on the phone, and if she was organising a dinner party for Friday night, then they wouldn’t be spending time together anyway, at least not on their own. It seemed that one more thing had changed, despite Lex’s assurances that nothing would.
“Yeah, I guess so,” Clark replied when he realised that Lisbeth was still waiting for an answer.
“Lovely. I’ve already spoken to Anna, and she’s looking forward to it too. I’ll send Lex’s driver for you at 6pm, and you can pick up Anna on the way,” Lisbeth continued without letting Clark say anything further. “I’ll see you on Friday.”
“Okay…” Clark found himself talking to an empty line, feeling uneasy.
He sighed and flopped down onto his bed, wincing as he heard another spring pop loose in the ancient mattress. He grabbed the closest text book and opened it to the latest chapter. Disliking his best friend’s wife was no excuse to fail his finals.
