One possible explanation for burying the bathtub is that he did so specifically to bury the bottles as well, in order to give them that "stolen from an archaeological dig site" look that brings so much moolah on the black market.
And yes, there is seriously a black market for bottles stolen from digs.
Another possibility is that the tree was planted deliberately in the bath, and the glass bottles were there as purchase for the roots ... sounds daft, I know, but it's sound planning.
