Books-#200-240

Dec 23, 2011 15:25

A bit of commentary on some of these, not really any full fledged reviews.
- 7/11 11:30pm Insatiable-Cabot (new)(library)(ebook) funny and charming, a bit of a tumbledown ending

- 7/12 8:45pm Every Patient Tells A Story-Sanders (new)(library)(ebook) diagnostic stories accompanied by examination of the diagnostic process in medicine, primarily in America
- 7/13 10:00am Moon Called-Briggs (new)(bought-omnibus)(mine)(paper)liked it-has a practical main character
- 7/13 2:15pm Blood Bound-Briggs (new)(bought-omnibus)(mine)(paper)
-7/14 10:00am(ish) Iron Kissed-Briggs(new)(bought-omnibus)(mine)(paper)
- 7/14 2:00pm For A Few Demons More-Harrison (reread-I think)(library)(ebook)
-7/14 5:15pm A Cold Day For Murder-Stabenow (new)(mine)(free)(ebook)
- 7/15 11:00am Midnight Come Again-Stabenow (new)(mine)(ebook)(bought-discounted)
- 7/15 9:45pm How To Marry A Millionaire Vampire (new)(mine)(free)(ebook) ebook giveaway- actually not too bad. A dentist in witness protection meets a vamp who needs his fang fixed. After that it gets a bit complicated. Not super plausible, but readable and internally consistent and amusing. It seems to be a series.
- 7/16 2:15pm A Fatal Thaw-Stabenow (new)(mine)(bought-iBooks, 4.99)(ebook)
- 7/17 5:45pm Breakup-Stabenow (new)(mine)(bought-iBooks, 2.99)(ebook)
- 7/18 8:30am Silhouette in Scarlet-Peters (new)(library)(ebook)
- 7/18 11:45pm The Titan's Curse- Riordan (new)(library)(paper)
- 7/19 12:45pm The Battle of The Labyrinth- Riordan  (new)(library)(paper)
- 7/19 8:00pm The Last Olympian- Riordan (new)(library)(paper)
- 7/21 12:30pm Doormen- Bearman (new)(library)(paper) an odd book based on a sociological study conducted by a Columbia class. Some of the book is quite dry, some is interesting-especially since I've lived in a few variants on the 'doorman building'. However, there's one (in my opinion) rather glaring oversight: when discussing why doorman/tenant sexual relationships are either frowned upon or banned all together, he talks about favoritism toward the tenant involved and the possibility that the doorman might gossip about other tenants, but not about the perceived or possible danger of having an ex be in charge of your security. I'm not saying that all doormen are stalkers in waiting, but they have unusual access to tenant's lives and I would think that the wish to avoid such situations might deserve a mention.
-7/21 2:15pm Teardrops and Tiny Trailers-Keister (new)(mine)(bought-kindle-.99?)(ebook) it was fun to enlarge all the pictures and I love little houses and campers. However, not all the pics were of suitable resolution to see full screen, which was a bit disappointing. Also, I'd have preferred more interior images.
- 7/22 8:45am With No One As Witness-George (reread)(library)(paper)
- 7/22 5:00pm
The Justice League Int. Vol. 6- Giffen, DeMatteis, etc
Supergirl:Death &The Family-Gates, etc
Avengers:The Coming of The Beast-various
(new)(library)(paper)(comics)
- 7/22 11:30pm What Came Before He Shot Her-George (new?)(library)(paper)
- 7/23 7:00pm Careless in Red- George (new)(library)(paper)
- 7/24 11:00am This Body of Death-George (new)(library)(paper)
-Summer of The Dragon-Peters (new)(library)(ebook) most of her stuff so far's pretty formulaic (but fun) this is my favorite of the early 20 something smart and sassy but possibly a bit naive girl goes on some kind of vacation or internship somewhat related to archaeology possibly and has a Beatrice/Benedict relationship with an older cute guy surrounded by a cast of quirky characters some of whom are Up To No Good, and they solve the mystery.
- 7/26 5:00pm The New Avengers-Bendis, etc (new)(library)(paper)(comic)
- Shadow Unit Season 3 (new)(online-counting as ebook)(counting as free) which reminds me that I should get around to making an annual donation
- 7/28 12:15am The Curse of Chalion-Bujold (new)(library)(paper) as usual with this author, it didn't seem the sort of thing I'd like but I turned out to like it quite a bit
- 7/28 6:45pm Paladin of Souls-Bujold (new)(library)(paper)
- 7/30 12:15am Burning Bridges-Gilman (new)(library)(ebook) it felt like there was another half of the story that was left out- I think it's a combo of not having read the earlier books in the series and some really jumpy transitions.
- 7/30 12:15pm Kitty Goes to Washington-Vaughn (reread)(library)(ebook)
- 7/31 12:40am Hit List-Hamilton (new)(library)(paper) still irritating, still beating the same dead horses, but this one actually had a better sex:plot ratio and tied up some plot threads that they've had going for 6+ books.
- 7/31 11:15am Dead Witch Walking- Harrison (reread)(library)(ebook)
- 8/1 9:00am Cold-Streever (new)(library)(paper) interesting info and histories of cold ecology, geology, research and history but lacks a compelling framing/structure moving from one topic to the next.
- 8/2 7:00pm The Hallowed Hunt-Bujold (new)(library)(ebook)
- 8/5 9:45am Outlander- Gabaldon (new)(library)(ebook) some of it was rather good, some was a bit implausible
- 8/6 10:00am The Arsenic Century: How Victorian Britain was Poisoned at Home, Work, & Play- Whorton (new)(library)(paper) yeah, the Victorian era's not all that nifty when everything's covered in poison
- 8/7 9:45am Whiteout: Vol 1 & 2-Rucka, Lieber (reread)(library)(paper)(comic)
- 8/7 7:15pm Inside of a Dog- Horowitz (new)(library)(paper) interesting but not astounding
- 8/7 11:00pm The Wolves of Willoughby Chase- Aiken (new)(library)(paper)
- 8/8 9:45pm Unnatural Issue- Lackey (new)(library)(paper)
-8/15 11:00pm Kitty and The Midnight Hour-Vaughn (reread)(library)(ebook)
- 8/15 11:45pm The Emperor of All Maladies- Mukherjee (new)(library)(paper) it was slow going but it didn't stall out like some other science histories do. Usually clear, concise, and engaging
