Can you post a link to the youtube vid you mentioned? I'd love to see the rats.
I find it hard to imagine a life without animals and without travel as well. Which is a bit of a problem since pets need care when we travel. But still - I can't imagine what it would be like when the cats are gone one day. And I want a dog so badly!!!
Yeah, they do conflict quite a bit. Especially since the only person capable of feeding my lizards their locusts and cockroaches is my mum. That and the fact I miss them all so much after just a few days. What kind of dog do you want?
The rat staring contest is so awesome!!! *lol* Do they fight, too? Or does it end after a while when one of them backs down? If so, that would be a neat way to solve conflict.
I've grown up with boxers and the flat face appeals to me. I've lately fallen in love with a giant mastif. Such an awesome, relaxed animal. I may reconsider that though because they probably eat my wages worth in meat. The requirements are definitely a big dog (well over knee hight) and gentle. Although I believe I can make any dog gentle when I start them young.
The two that were staring at one another were actually brothers that had never been separated. I was trying to introduce them to my older rats, and no matter where I tried it they would scream and try to get away from the bigger rats. The bigger rats then started attacking them and they unusually learned that if they put themselves into this 'pre-fight' stance with one another, they wouldn't be attacked. The bigger rats wouldn't try to fight them if they looked like they were already fighting. I've never heard of it happening anywhere else! Usually rats do this pose for a couple of seconds.
Giant mastiffs are one of my favourite breeds! I have a Chinese shar-pei that lives with my mum (as seen as the emotion icon on this entry!), so I know what you mean about their smushy faces!
