Day 2

Jul 31, 2007 10:21

Did you know that some ketchup has high fructose corn syrup in it?  Well I didn’t.  Two days in and I had to give K a dollar for screwing up (money as a motivator, it could work).  Blast, I have tried to be so careful.  I do have to say that my energy level is much more consistent during the day and the 3:00 ‘I want a nap’ did not happen yesterday ( Read more... )

this is why i switched to organic ketchup… i don't really care about organic tomatoes, but it has sugar instead of HFCS.

I am going to have to go through everything in my kitchen, this has been such an eye opener. There is a major shopping trip to Whole Foods in my future.

hopefully it's the same where you live, but around here, even places like safeway and qfc have generic organic stuff now. i think my ketchup is safeway brand.

yeah, reading labels is a trip. it's amazing the kind of shit they can pack in and call it food. you can't even let up for the supposedly healthy stuff... canned food is especially bad, and the frozen meals, man, don't even get me started. sometimes the generic/cheap stuff is good while the upscale supposedly healthy stuff is bad, sometimes it's the other way around. i got low-sodium garbanzo beans a while ago and just noticed they added sugar! wtf!

i haven't bought much besides produce in a while because i just make soups and loafs and stuff from dry beans and grains. it's really cheap, and then if at the end i want to add salt on top of the other spices, i can.

You are doing it right (now wonder you look so great now). It will take me a while to be as good as you are but it is good to know that is is possible and not want for the food most of us grew up on.

(if you still have the link to the sprout grower, I would love it)

That might be a good challenge to try (eliminating HFCS). I'll be inspecting my groceries a lot closer now!

you should. So far I really have not had to change any of my food choices just switch brands on a few things.

Still SOOO incredibly jealous that you got to see Erasure! I saw them when I was in HS and was supposed to see them two other times but one I got the flu and the other something came up ... can't remember why.

The one that I DID see them he came out in a pink tutu bouncing on a hippity hop! Fantastic!

That would have been great!!! He came out this time in grey and black camo pants and a black wife beater. Not that over the top. I was hoping for more of the pink tutu type outfit.

It's in so much stuff in part because the government subsidizes corn as a crop (the source of HFCS), causing HFCS to be uber-cheap, which is part of the reason junk food is cheaper than healthy food. I've found one brand of peanut butter that uses sugar and the oil doesn't separate out and one brand of jelly that uses pectin; it's hard to find bread without it.

I haven't eliminated it from my diet, but I do feel very strongly about the subject. I hope you keep it up and keep passing along your awareness of it. :)

That is partly why we started this. We both saw the 20/20 or 60 min. piece on the subsidies and the food it is in (it was about 4 months ago). It has been a great exersize. After reading lables I am realizing how much salt I am eating a day. And it is horrific since I don't use salt when I cook and looking at what is in drinks, sauces and pre-packages just makes me sick.
