I think the biggest problem facing Piro, and many web-comics today, is the fact that Piro is not, nor was he ever, a writer. He is an artist, and being an artist, even a very good one, does not make up for a lack of writing ability.
People such as Piro and many others that I've seen really need to find good writers and draw the stories those people write rather than assuming that understanding how to draw comics will instantly make them able to put together a good cohesive comic story. I have, in fact, stopped reading may a-webcomic for this very reason, the art was great, but the story wasn't even on the radar.
