I think my main lingering problem is that there are almost no mechanics for anything that isn't combat related anymore. I can diplomacize and I can lore things, but that is it really. Crafting went out the window and ya know that gave characters flavor, having a trade, it also played a big part in being a mage in my mind and they have taken out the rules for being an artificer. If the dmg had rules for item creation that would have been something, but it didn't which seems a glaring oversight.
phb2 added in a few new classes which were neat for the main part though i don't like bard as a font of sonic damage. Possibly the neatest thing they added in phb2 were a bunch of new paragon paths that were based on race instead of class which I thought were really spiffy. Aside from that I saw a bunch of new abilities for existing classes and a pile of new loot.
The only crafting I have found so far is alchemy which requires a feat and otherwise requires training in a lot of seemingly random skills. For instance alchemical silver lists "Key Skill: Nature, Religion, or Thievery." So it's...something.
