Batman, Jesus, Jean-Luc Picard.
Compare, contrast.

What is it about these three characters in particular, that invariably wins them my hero worship?
Seriously, I want to quantify it.

Their ability to unfalteringly follow their own moral convictions, no matter what the consequences might be, or how their actions might be perceived by those around them?

I have to say, the second one surprises me.

Oh, and they've all died for ratings, only to have the writers bring them back a few intervals later.

I rofl'd.
Also; Jesus fits the picture just perfectly. I respect the guy for what I know of him. I just want to throttle his idiot fanboys and fanfic community.

Second one surprises me as well

However, There is something unbreakable about them.

Bruce wayne spent years building himself into an instrument of justice
Jeses was told "we plan on nailing you to this instrument so you may face an exruciating death while your followers all mock you, but we need it up on that hill across town, carry it for us will ya?"
and Picard "There are FOUR lights' need i say more

also, they never stooped to their oppositions tactics and all brilliantly outsmart their opponenets w/o resorting to underhandedness

Let's see...

Batman: Does the most he possibly can with the stuff he has. Catch: He has several million dollars worth of stuff, meaning he can do quite a lot.

Jesus: ...iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiffff you're Jesus and you know it clap you hands!

Jean-Luc Picard: I really thought about it and all I could think of is this: In an interrogation scene, when his captors shine a bright light on him, he has the almost supernatural power to blind them just by angling his reflective forehead correctly.

All men. All rose above their more base needs to leave the world a better place while ostensibly eschewing the attentions of the fairer sex.

I postulate you admire them because no one ever controlled them but themselves.

Also: All highly fictionalized representations of Man written by men.
