She looked down towards the wrist of the arm she was holding. A black and white alien device, cold to touch and fused firmly to her cousins arm was the sight that greeted her. She touched the skin right above the device, it felt warm, it was a nice warm and sunny day but when she brought herself to touch the green faceplate of the Omnitrix, it was freezing cold. Why was it so cold?
He turned his hazel eyes towards her, eyebrows raised. His grin was teasing, his muscles relaxed. He trusted her completely, she was the only one who could even be on his left side. The knowledge in that itself gave her butterflies in her stomach.
She met his eyes for just a moment then blushed and look away. She didn't know when the Hell she found herself falling for him. It kind of pissed her off. She liked being mad at him, she even liked laughing with him. She so didn't want to go into details about the other things she liked doing with him, things that lovers did. Loving her cousin... was it really as easy as this?
“You're thinking way too hard. Am I in trouble?” His voice was clear and soft, breaking perfectly through her thoughts.
She bit her lip. “I don't know, are you?”
“With you, probably!” His grin faltered when she frowned at him. “C'mon Gwen,” He nudged his shoulder to hers, prodding her on. “Tell me what's on your mind.”
“Why is the Omnitrix so cold on your wrist? Does the coldness bite into you?”
He looked taken back from her question, his eyes narrowed as he thought about it for a moment. “Sometimes.” He answered quietly. “Not all the time, just there are times when my wrist is so damned heavy... and times when there's a cold that comes from the watch and just seeps it's way into me.”
She shivered, as if the warm day and the sun no longer warmed her. “How do you get warm after something like that? It's stuck on your wrist, there's no escape from it...”
“Hey.” He gently pulled his arm away from her and put it around her, bringing her closer to his side for warmth. “I can't get rid of the Omnitrix, but there is too escape. I just have other things to think about that keep me warm.”
She couldn't look at his face. “You can't possibly mean me.” She protested.
“But I can. And I do. Anything else on your mind?” His patience at times astounded her. She knew him as the wound up tight ten year old and saw him as a still wound up 30 year old. But she found herself growing up and being friends with him at 18 and there was something about him laid back. Bad things happened, he couldn't fix everything but he did his best when called upon. She couldn't help but wonder if this was the Ben that the Gwendolyn of the far off future was hoping for.
“You think too much.” His voice brought her again from his thoughts. “Don't you ever get headaches?”
“And you don't think enough, Doofus.” She stopped and covered her mouth. “I've held your hand and even gone as far as making out with you and still find it easy to insult you. Why is that?”
“Because I'm me and you're you, Dweeb.”
“Dweeb?”
“If you can call me names, I can call you names. I find your names kind of weird, I guess I always imagined honey, sweetie, sugar but I should have known better.” His grin widened. “You've always been an original, Gwen.”
She rolled her eyes. “Why do I even put up with you?”
“Because you love me.” His gaze looked at her and challenged her to deny it. She replied to the challenge by putting her elbow in his ribs.
“Maybe I do. What do we do about it?” There she said it, hoping it would bring his thoughts into light. She looked up at him and noticed there was something definitely going on in that brain of his.
“Pick an ice cream flavor.”
She blinked. “Ice cream flavor?”
“It's a nice day at the park... I'm with you.... and I feel like ice cream.” He nodded with his head and she followed his gaze to an ice cream cart that was across the park. “Don't you?”
She shook her head. “Ice cream...”
“Yup. I'll even buy.” His eyes twinkled and she found herself shaking her head at him in awe.
