More Ben/Gwen goodness. Things hit the fan when the family realizes they have kissing cousins on their hands >_<

There were times when it felt like he was holding the whole world on his shoulders, and this was one of those days. He sagged under the weight of it, tired and aching as he sat at the battered wooden dining table and ran his hands over the familiar lines and bumps of the surface. The cordless phone sat beside him on the table and he was doing his best to not look at it, still stunned from the conversation he had just had.

“What did you kids get yourselves into now?” He asked the table as he still explored the surface. There, to his left in front of the seat on the side of the table was one of his son's names carved into the wood. At first, he was outraged that his son could so thoughtlessly mar the table like that but as the years go by it just became part of the table, part of the history the table had gone through.

He had just gotten off the phone with his daughter in law Julie who was up in arms after the fact that Ben and Gwen were doing more than just studying while off at college. He always wanted them to get along a little better, he just never really had any intention of them... as an item. What were they thinking? What was Gwen thinking? Ben always was the one who acted on impulse but Max always thought his granddaughter would have more sense than that. Kissing cousins was an expression he heard before and never put much thought into it but now he regretted that.

It's your fault, old man. You just had to take them in that RV of yours, when they were developing, leaving them in each other's company for who knows how long? His ears rang with the accusations Julie blew him away with. He thought he was giving his grandchildren the world... to do a road trip across the United States and see all the important and not so important sights meant a lot to him, it was to be educational and something fun something he could do with them. He never at all intended that a summer of sight seeing ten years ago would somehow twist them into loving each other in a non-Platonic way.

A terrible banging at his back door brought him out of his thoughts. Frowning, he went and looked through the peep hole to see who it was. He saw his grandson standing out there, head down and seeming out of breath, hazel eyes looked pleadingly at him from under soaked bangs. He opened the door and felt his heart stop when cradled in his grandson's arms was his unconscious redheaded granddaughter.

“Benjamin, what are you doing?” He jerked the door back further to allow his grandson and his cargo through. “Do you have any idea what your aunt is going on about?”

“She tried to fly here from her mother's, Grandpa. She's exhausted.” The tenderness on his grandson's face for the person in his arms stopped Max cold. “I don't think she ever tried flying that far before, I don't know what she was thinking. She hasn't stirred since she went out, what's wrong with her?”

Max mentally kicked himself for having his priorities screwed around. His granddaughter's health was a lot more important than worrying about his daughter in law being on the war path. Immediately he brought a hand to her forehead and was surprised at how freezing cold she was.

“She flew, you say? That takes a lot of energy, especially trying to go at the distance she was going. How far did she get?” Magic and the tolls it did on people was not Max's expertise, not having a magical aura himself he kept to the other parts of the preternatural that didn't involve magic, such as aliens.

“Two- two and a half hours, maybe. I don't remember. I was just trying got keep up with her on the ground. I knew something was up, for her to leave the house like that but I just kept in the back until she faltered and started falling...”

“So you caught her? She didn't meet the ground?” Ben shook his head at the questions. “Get her upstairs in a bed. Take all the quilts and cover her up. I think she's used all her energy, she needs to stay warm and sleep it off.” He sharply watched as the young man moved across the kitchen and headed up the stairs. Thoughts ran rampant in his mind.

It's so not done yet. x_X But I'm glad I have done what I do.
