criztalinz's prompt. Probably not quite what you were looking for, but ah well. Muses are such fickle creatures. Hope you like it anyways~ Merry Christmas.
Edit: after it was pointed out to me that this read very much like a prequel to my fic The Game, I went back and reread both of them very carefully. One or two tiny little changes and yeah, it does. So viola~ A prequel.
Summary:
In which Heechul will never, ever like Jaejoong but will always be there for Yunho despite his bad taste in guys.
~*~*~
“What the hell do you think you're doing here?” Heechul's voice was often vicious or sarcastic, but seldom was it actually as menacing as it was just then as he scowled at the bedraggled man on his doorstep.
“I need to see Yunho.”
If anything, Heechul seemed to grow colder. “No.”
“Heechul-”
“No.” The older man stepped just far enough out to get into Jaejoong's face. “You've done enough damage for one day and he's sleeping. Go away.”
“Dammit, Heechul, if you'd just let me-”
“Don't make me have Siwon throw you off the step, Jaejoong. You know I will.”
Mouth twisting in a grimace, Jaejoong took a step back. Siwon looked vaguely apologetic where he was lurking behind Heechul, but there was no doubt that he'd do as Heechul asked. If he couldn't manage it himself, Donghae and Kangin were half visible a bit further in the room. Donghae looked mad enough to break things and hopeful enough that 'things' would end up being Jaejoong's face that Jaejoong took another half-step back.
They'd only ever been his friends by proxy. They were Yunho's friends first and foremost.
“Would you please just...” He sighed and slumped slightly, glancing away. The things he needed to say to Yunho couldn't be watered down through messengers - especially not ones like Heechul who hated his guts and would outright lie given the opportunity to make Jaejoong look worse than he already did. “Just tell him that I need to speak to him.” Before Heechul could spit out another biting retort, Jaejoong held up a hand. “Whenever he's ready.”
Heechul would pass along no such messages, but behind him Siwon gave a short nod which would have to do.
Jaejoong turned to go, but paused. “I really do love him, you know.”
“Right,” Heechul sneered. “You love him so much you find it impossible to be faithful. Well guess what, Jaejoong. You don't get to hurt him anymore. This was your last chance. He left. He won't be coming back.”
There was nothing else Jaejoong could say or do but leave and pray that Heechul was wrong.
~*~*~
“You're going back.” Heechul's voice was flat and angry, but not terribly surprised.
Yunho had been choosing Jaejoong since they were thirteen. Years of having Jaejoong stomp and gouge his heart hadn't changed that.
The younger man sighed and shrugged. “I love him, Heechul. And whatever you think about his behavior... I know he loves me, too.”
Fists clenched, Heechul glared daggers at the wall. “He doesn't deserve you. He never did.”
Curling against Heechul's side, Yunho wrapped both arms around Heechul's middle and cuddled close as much for his own comfort as to calm his long time friend. “Maybe not. But I still love him.”
Heechul sighed and ruffled Yunho's hair. “You're too damned loyal and stubborn for your own good, you know.”
“I am who I am. I don't know how to be anything else.”
Glancing towards the door, Heechul sighed again at the sight of his own lover leaning there watching them with cautious care. He couldn't argue with the way things had turned out for himself. He'd have never found Hankyung if Yunho had chosen him. That didn't mean he had to like the fact that one of the few people he held close to his heart was so unhappy.
“If you don't make him grovel at least a little for a few days, I won't ever speak to you again.” He could feel the smile that curved against his shoulder.
“I don't need to make him grovel, Chullie. He'll do that all on his own.”
Heechul huffed and rolled his eyes. “You're an idiot. With bad taste. Why am I your friend again?”
“Because you love me.”
“Bah.” Heechul swatted at Yunho's head. “Maybe I have bad taste too. I mean... look who I'm sleeping with, after all.”
“Hey!” From the doorway, Hankyung let out an indignant squawk of protest, but Heechul just winked at him.
Yunho laughed softly and it Heechul's heart warmed to hear it.
He didn't understand Yunho's unswerving loyalty, but it was what made the man so easy to love. If only he hadn't settled that devotion onto Kim Jaejoong of all people.
With a sigh, he tugged on Yunho's hair lightly. “If this happens again, I'm going to have Siwon dump him on the street. In a puddle. I'll take video and post it on every TVXQ forum, community, and fan site I can find so that the whole world can share his humiliation.”
Yunho butted his head against Heechul's shoulder in disapproval, but made a soft noise of agreement. “Ok.”
It would have to do.
