I've had much frustration with overly sensitive (or wrongly-sensitive) smoke detectors. My favorite story is when my great aunt and great uncle had taken a trip to Florida and my grandparents, who were living in Taiwan at the time, said they could stay in their house in St. Pete. My aunt steps out of the shower and the steam sets off the smoke detector. They fan the detector until it shuts off and think they're in the clear, not realizing its hot-wired along with the burglar alarm system to call emergency services. The fire department and police show up and they have to explain who they are with little evidence to back them up. My grandparents, not anticipating any problems, hadn't provided them with the verbal passcodes to call off the alarms. Eventually, the cops accepted their story but I'm not sure whether it required a middle-of-the-night call to Taiwan to clear it all up.
