here are the basic facts: they hurt. They're impossible to walk around in. They can cause permanent damage. If you live in a major city, you probably spend a quarter of your salary on cabs when you wear them. And if you drive, you no doubt keep a pair of "driving" flats in the glove compartment. That's because heels aren't designed for your ( Read more... )

I hate it when in movies, they show the woman running around in high heels. That always bugs me because if it was me, and i had to be running for my life.... if i happened to be wearing heels at the time, I'd be dead. I would attempt to take them off (then you have the problem of stepping on rocks and crap.... ooouch... but i think that's the lesser of two evils.). I can barely walk in heels, let alone run in them.

I have to have a wide heel so my ankles don't wobble. If it's a wide heel, I can walk fast and even run with no problem... but not a thin stiletto heel.

I miss my one pair of shoes that had a wide heel and were the cutest things and i loved them dearly. They got ruined when my apartment kept flooding my senior year in college. I had bought them the summer before my freshman year at college.

I hate when you have that one ideal pair of shoes that you love that eventually get damaged or lost over time. :\ Agreed that thick heels are much more comfortable than stilettos.

I have to say I love the look of stilettos. However, I do not wear them. Last time I wore heels of any sort (to a wedding - I don't have a lot of wedding-appropriate footwear and was too lazy to acquire more), I ended up with serious blisters and foot pain. Those heels are at least stable - in most heels, I feel like I'm constantly on the edge of twisting an ankle.

Same here. I have perhaps one pair of boots that I consider to have "heels", but they're extremely thick and have traction on the bottom. I have never found a pair of typical stilettos that I could walk in without worrying I was going to sprain my ankle. In terms of aesthetics, I've personally never found heels to look more attractive than flats, but I know everyone has different preferences. I actually think lace-up, knee-high combat boots are kind of hot, but few people seem to wear those anymore. ;)

When I'm not at work, I will look for articles about that online...I've never heard that before. :P

Maybe it's because high heels put pressure on the cervix. I know someone who went into early labor because she wore lots of heels when she was 9 months pregnant..

Oh right. :)

The thing is, even if that is 100% true...I still don't personally think it's worth causing yourself perpetual discomfort or back pain. If I knew a lot of women who were perfectly comfortable in heels, then I would probably have a different viewpoint about it. But most women I have known who regularly (ie, every day) wear high heels (especially in shoes that have little/no support), have routinely complained about how uncomfortable they are. Which makes me wonder whether the benefits are really trumping the losses. Still, of course they have the freedom to decide that for themselves. :)
