Does any one happen to know whether there are many midges around in april?

Depends. This April was very warm, so their would have been some, but you can get candles with citronella in them should you really think you will have an issue.

To be honest it's the f'n flying elephants at that of year you really need to worry about. Bastards always seem to be able to swoop in and nick my apples.

I would agree, it depends on the weather. If you get a couple of warm days they will probably spring up..
