Jesse halted at the walkway to the house and looked around sceptically, scuffing his shoe on the pavement. His body language clearly said that he was not happy about being here. He had his hands shoved deep in the pockets of his dark green army jacket, his shoulders hunched and scarf wrapped tightly around his neck. It was cold, and it was new years eve, and he was not with the one person he really wanted to be with, and one of his best friends in the world was now on another island on the other side of it. He wasn't in any sort of mood to be at a party.
Scowling, he looked up at his brother. "Remind me again why we're here?"
Jack rolled his eyes and clapped his brother on the back with a broad grin. "We are here, baby brother, because I am sick of seeing you moping around the house like everyone you know has just died. Life is surely not that bad."
Jack had overheard some of his coworkers talking about it, who had been told about the festiviteis first hand from the driver of the knight bus himself. And Jack was not one to miss a party if the opportunity was there for him. Besides, maybe there would be some nice girls here, oh he hoped so.
"Besides, come on Jess, it's gonna be people from your school and all, surely some of your mates will be around, it'll be a great time, now buck up and let's go."
"You don't get it, do you?" Jesse blurted out. "Bad things happen at parties, Jack. I haven't yet been to one where things go well, and ones I haven't been to..." he shuddered. "Well thank god I haven't." He positively sulked.
"Oh for... Merlin, Jess, is that what you're worried about?" Jack's expression softened slightly, from jovial to caring, as he peered into his brother's downturned face. "Jesse," he said softly, "nothing is going to happen, okay? Not to you, Jess, and you know why? Because I'm here." He straightened up and smiled again. "I won't even drink anything. and I promise you, you'll have a good time. If you're completely miserable, we'll leave as soon as you want to, okay?"
"But MOM..." Steph whined as her Abby dragged her in. "I don't want to go! I was supposed to go to Jenette's party tonight. Why make me come here? This is Kittu's dad's party! I spend enough time avoiding the freak at school."
"Stephanie!" Abby snapped slightly as she turned. "You will go, and you will have fun."
"Fine." Steph sulked, hurridly making her way into a corner, away from everyone, where she could make sure that if she saw Kittu she could escape esily.
Kittu saw Steph and his jaw dropped instantly. STEPH. WAS AT. HIS HOUSE. HIS HOUSE. Where he lived. Like... wow.
After a moment of staring at her dumbstruck, he practically dove into the wc to straighten his tie and make sure his hair looked okay. He may or may not have popped a breath mint in as well. He hopped Steph hadn't spotted his desperate retreat so that he could still make a suave approach towards her.
Well, Steph may not have noticed, but Kittu's mum did. Her face lit up instantly with understanding when she saw Kittu go into preening mode. Picking up a small tray of h'orderves and made her way over to where the young Slytherin sat sulking. "Excuse me," she said sweetly, "Are you hungry, dear?" She offered the tray. "Ohhhhhh, you must be one of Kittu's friends from school! I'm so glad you could come!"
Stephanie looked up as she heard the older woman approach, ready to walk away until she realized that she was one of the hosts of this shindig, and that would be rude. She smiled faintly, shaking her head lightly. "I'm fine thanks."
She nearly choked on her own words when his mother thought she was one of his school friends. "Well...we're not really...friends..." She said slowly, trying to think of a better way to phrase what she wanted to say, so it wasn't as ruse as your son is a little perv who should stay the hell out of my way before I hex his balls off. She didn't think that would go over well.
"Ah, I see," Mrs. Mathur said wisely, popping one of the h'orderves into her own mouth, and unabashedly surveying the girl in front of her. She seemed a bit... old for Kittu, but she wasn't going to scold her for being the object of a schoolboy crush. "Well, I'm glad you've come. Are you here on your own?"
"Hullo, hullo!" Dilip bellowed as soon as the Lees came in. "So glad you could come, so glad you could make it. Smitha's making the rounds with h'orderves and damned if I know where Kittu disappeared to, but there's other people in here too, I expect!" He talked a mile a minute, which was roughly the half the speed at which he drove the Knight Bus. He also seriously enjoyed the sound of his own voice
( ... )
Dilip grinned broadly. "Only fifteen?" he asked. "I was only fifteen when I fell in love with the love of my life! Unfortunately, I have to keep my prize broomstick in the closet, or else Smitha gets jealous." His buoyant laughter rose above most every other sound in the room. "Seriously, though, Mina, Smithat's over in the corner... looks like she's chatting up some girl. Anyway," he said, clapping a hand onto Peter's shoulder, "Nothing wrong with a good, hearty snog at her age. You know, with a boy her own age. Might make her a bit more, you know, relaxed."

Isabel Pepper clutched her cat, Jerry, and followed her father into the foil. Still very shy, she knew the name of the boy who lived here (they were in the same house, after all) but she had still never talked to him. Regardless, when her father received an invitation to party, he was unstoppable.
Waldo Pepper entered the Mathur residence, bellowing out all the Hindi words he knew. "Aloo mattar! Bachpan ki dost! Mughal-e-azam!" he exclaimed, hoping to hit on a phrase that meant something like "happy holidays" or "you have a very lovely home, thank you for inviting us."

Kittu had actually finished primping in the wc just in time to bump into one of his housemates - a first year he knew barely by sight, and certainly not by name. "Uh," he said, the height of eloquence, as usual. "We don't have aloo mattar," he explained to the man with the girl, "but there's samosas and tamarind, and some other stuff, too, that my Mum made."

"Why, thank you, my good man!" Waldo exlaimed. Unfortunately, Waldo had little-to-no idea of what Kittu was referring to. "Do you know Isabel, my daughter?"
Isabel looked down, still clutching her feline friend. She loved her father dearly, but her enthusiasm for social gatherings didn't quite match his.

"Uh, sort of?" Kittu answered. Frankly, Isabel was not exactly what he thought to be an interesting person, and therefore not the type of person he sought out for a friend. "She's in Hufflepuff with me at school," he said, addressing the man completely, not even really looking at the girl.
Owl post was remarkable, really, Lea had thought when she'd heard Kittu's family would be having a party. It had taken far too much convincing for her liking, to get her parents to allow her to come, but she wanted to see people, she wanted to be a part of the wizarding world again. Holidays at home were, well... drab.
In the end, it was her dad who gave in. He gave his assurances to his wife that he would escort Lea to the party and meet the hosts, and if they seemed responsible, he'd leave her there. If not, he'd bring her home. She really wanted to stay, so Lea held her breath as she stood next to her dad, (dressed blissfully in jeans and a light teal shirt that didn't clash with her hair, unlike her House colors) and hoped that Kittu's parents were, well, normal.
Dilip Mathur was greeting guests by the door (wearing his ridiculous outfit, of course), when he noticed a girl with bright pink hair appear.
"Oh, hello, you must be one of Kittu's school friends, then," he said jovially, shaking her hand energetically. "Don't know where the boy is, but you might not recognize him anyway, he's clean! Well, cleanish at the very least." He automatically began shaking the next gentleman's hand with just as much vigor, inviting them into his home with broad gestures.
