None So Blind
“Try not to trip over your own colossal feet, Harris.”
“It was a tree root! See for yourself! I haven’t tripped over my own, um, colossal feet for--"
“At least ten minutes?”
Willow rolled her eyes when she heard the familiar voices. Spike and Xander. Bickering again. Why they insisted on patrolling together was one of the mysteries of life that even the Goddess would have trouble unravelling, since they seemed to grate on one another’s last nerve. Any day now, she expected to come across Xander standing on a pile of dust with a stake in his hand and a gleeful grin plastered across his face.
She sighed. That’d be a shame because Spike was kinda helpful with the slayage. If they’d only admit it, they made a good team. Their nightly tally of kills sometimes beat Buffy’s.
It wasn’t as if Spike watched out for Xander; she knew that. Xander often complained loud and long that Spike refused to cut him some slack and take account of his annoying human frailty, which made it all the more puzzling that they’d teamed up. Maybe he wanted to be a witness if Xan got himself cut down by a wandering nasty? She figured Spike wouldn’t be above sneaking a sip or two of blood before calling 911.
“Xander, watch out!”
Willow was startled by the panic in Spike’s voice. She ran towards the pair and stopped short at the sight that greeted her.
Xander was lying flat on his back, holding his head and swearing softly. A thin trickle of blood crept between his fingers and down the back of his hand.
Spike was lunging towards a Grokl demon, sword in hand. He plunged it into the demon’s third eye and it collapsed in a gush of blue goo then seemed to shrink in on itself, eventually becoming a small heap of leathery skin on the ground. Turning from his kill, Spike strode over to Xander.
Willow knew she should go to her friend’s aid but something in Spike’s expression as he looked at Xander stopped her. He looked almost…anxious. She huddled against the side of the Patterson Family crypt, trying to make herself as small and inconspicuous as possible.
She needn’t have worried. Spike’s attention was wholly concentrated on his fallen companion, who had pulled himself up and was sitting cross-legged on the grass, still holding his head.
Squatting beside Xander, Spike pulled away his hand and Willow could see the superficial gash on Xander’s forehead. With a huff that sounded like relief, Spike said wryly, “Tree root, eh?”
“Okay, okay, so it was a tail. How was I supposed to know?” Xander whined. “Should have been a big neon sign: 'This way to evil demon that wants to suck out my brains'.”
Spike grinned then stood and reached down to grip Xander’s hands and pull him to his feet. “There are better things to suck than your brains. Bigger and tastier, too.”
Willow stifled a gasp. That sounded like…
Apparently Xander agreed and he laughed loudly, the happy sound ringing through the cemetery. “Why, Spike, are you propositioning me?”
“Could be, love. Could be,” Spike said with a leer. He drew Xander’s bloodied hand to his mouth and licked the palm then began to fellate his fingers one by one, slowly and thoroughly cleansing them of every trace of red. His face rippled and his eyes flickered from blue to gold and back again as he tasted the usually forbidden treat.
To Willow’s shock, Xander seemed untroubled by the reminder that his carer was an evil creature of the night and watched Spike’s questing tongue with a rapt expression. He began to pant, his breathing becoming more and more laboured as his free hand rubbed the growing bulge in his jeans.
Willow felt her cheeks flame and her mouth dry at the intimacy of the scene but she couldn’t look away, even though her intuition told her more was to come. She fleetingly considered making her presence known with a discreet cough or trying to sneak away, but the embarrassment would be doubled, trebled, if Spike and Xander spotted her and knew she’d seen even this much so she stayed where she was.
Well, yeah, she should probably close her eyes or something but…
Once he’d finished his self-appointed task to his satisfaction, Spike dropped to his knees, pushed aside Xander’s hand and unzipped his fly, drawing out his hard cock. In a quick movement Willow had trouble following, he swallowed it down and his cheeks hollowed as he sucked hard.
Xander’s fingers curled into Spike’s hair for support and within minutes he came with a groan, his thrusting hips quieted by Spike’s grip on his hips. Seeing how the usually stiff helmet of blond strands spiked up under Xander’s touch, Willow had the irrelevant thought that maybe that was another reason for Spike’s silly nickname.
Xander’s knees buckled and Spike stood quickly, grabbing his upper arms to keep him upright. Xander sighed contentedly, a sweet smile crossing his lip, and leaned into Spike. He rested his head briefly on Spike’s shoulder then raised it, clearly asking for a kiss. Their mouths joined in a soft caress, tongues touching and tasting, lips moving. It spoke to Willow of easy familiarity and…love. They broke the kiss and murmured to one another.
“Was scared for you, pet.”
“Shhh. It’s okay. We’re both fine and together and everything’s okay as it could be.”
The jumble in Willow’s head condensed down to one searing realisation: It seemed that she and Xander had more in common than their shared childhood memories. They both had something to hide, something that would destroy forever the certainties that kept their little gang together if it became known.
She sighed and leaned back into a large body as two powerful arms encircled her waist. “Why didn’t I see?” she asked tearfully. “Xander is my best friend. Am I so blind? Are we all so blind?”
Angel watched as Spike and Xander walked away in the direction of Xander’s house, arms wrapped around each other. “Sometimes blindness is a blessing,” he said, tightening his own arms and gently kissing the top of her head. “After all, they don’t see us.”
