are there rules for when one should use academe rather than academia?
looking strictly by the dictionary definitions, it is hard to tell that there is.

Academe is used more by academics (I heard it first in grad school). For whatever reason I prefer academe to academia - on of the many imlad mysteries...

no offense, but i (at first blush) assumed "academe" was just a snobby academic thing to say - instead of saying just plan old "academia".

I think you assumed correctly, I feel as well that "academe" is a snobby way for academics to refer to their venue. Doesn't phase me though :-)
