Oddly enough, I learned the most about them from a gay-rights columnist whose thesis is that the Phelps family has done more for gay rights than any other protesters. He's started a fund to support them. Phags for Phelps.
This group started off protesting the funerals of AIDS victims.
No one cared.
Then they protested Matthew Sheppard's funeral.
A few people said "that's awful", but then forgot about it.
Now they're protesting soldiers' funerals, and suddenly everyone notices that it is a really hateful thing to do to picket someone's funeral.
Well, if that's what it takes to get people to notice that hate is ugly... Good. At least we can all agree on something.
I believe that Americans hate hate. And the more Shirley and her gospel of homophobic hate are exposed, the more friends GLBT Americans make. I want Shirley's message out there ( ... )
