Apparently they are cowards. I am writing an article for The Beacon about Christianity's role in the protesting of funerals and wars and other controversial issues. My angle is to question the intent of the church and not necessarily focus on the issues of protest. But to get to the heart of what they are trying to accomplish and whether or not ( Read more... )

Wow, two nearly simultaneous posts on my f-list about this.

Oddly enough, I learned the most about them from a gay-rights columnist whose thesis is that the Phelps family has done more for gay rights than any other protesters. He's started a fund to support them. Phags for Phelps.

This group started off protesting the funerals of AIDS victims.
No one cared.
Then they protested Matthew Sheppard's funeral.
A few people said "that's awful", but then forgot about it.
Now they're protesting soldiers' funerals, and suddenly everyone notices that it is a really hateful thing to do to picket someone's funeral.

Well, if that's what it takes to get people to notice that hate is ugly... Good. At least we can all agree on something.

I believe that Americans hate hate. And the more Shirley and her gospel of homophobic hate are exposed, the more friends GLBT Americans make. I want Shirley's message out there ( ... )

Thanks for the tip! And I believe you are right. I just don't like that they are the only voice of Christianity on this subject. So I in my small way will be a voice in the void telling others that Christians don't hate __________.
