The Powers that be in N.O. La. must all be assholes

Last night was the first football game played inside the Superdome since Katrina hit. Okay. First of all, I wouldn't set one single toe inside that place. No one can convince me that there aren't some really nasty germs and bacteria still lurking in nooks and crannys of that place. There isn't any possible way they could have fumigated every inch ( Read more... )

Priorities. Football comes first, above eating drinking, and not living in sewage.

The only thing I can think of is maybe they are banking on football/tourism to bring in more money...

If I didn't know you better. I'd nominate you to run for mayor of NO. PEOPLE have to come first above all. And don't they think about what tourists will think of them when they see all the damage still evident, but a brand new stadium bright and shining? Or maybe they just figured they'd use the stadium again when the next hurricane hits. (scream)

Returning the Sainsts to the Superdome is a tremendous psychological lift for all of us, and I don't know anyone who truly grudges the $91 million of public money that went into the Dome, even with the tremendous needs we have down here.

Given that next to no one down here has gotten more than a couple of thousands dollars in emergency assistance last year from the government, in spite of the fact that we were not damaged by Hurricane Katrina but by the failure of the federal government's levees, we're doing a remarkable job rebuilding the city. Yes, we have years and years or work ahead of us, but that doesn't diminish what we've basically done on our own up to this point, or the decision to return one of the things about the city that unites every single citizen.

This has nothing to do with Nagin or our own chocophobia. It has to do with how a million homeless people, abanadoned by their government, find a way to carry one.

So what exactly is your point? First you are all for the rebuilding of the stadium as a tremendous boost to people's morale and the next you are talking about the million homeless people with no where to go. This is my point. The city spent $145 MILLION

Sorry, hit the wrong button.

The city spent $145 MILLION on a stadium when the money would have been much better spent rebuilding low income housing for the less fortunate residents of NO. Should the stadium NOT have been rebuilt? No, it definitely is needed for the general economy. That's a given. But the priorities are skewed. Like I said in the original post - PEOPLE who were displaced and lost everything should have received some of this money before a stadium. And if the football franchise was the ones paying for the stadium then shame on them for not being a bit more insightful of people's blight.
