book meme, snagged from luvsev and dreamy_dragon73.

In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard - they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just ones that have touched you.

Dave’s Song by Robert McKay
Persuasion by Jane Austen*
The Gift by Hafiz, translated by Daniel Ladinsky

so that's the real reason :P

On the first draft of this meme (yes, there were a couple)I had Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, as well as Pride and Prejudice, which I thought might be too much Austen for one meme -- omg, did I really just type that? I take it back. There is never enough Austen. Never.

I just love Paulo Coelho; The Alchemist is among my favorites.

lol. i should have just put 'the works of jane austen,' lol. and apparently, you should have too, lol. ;P

i've only read a few of coelho's books thus far, but what i've read, i liked. the alchemist was the first one i read, and i think it was the first book that i ever read, finished, and immediately turned to page 1 and read the entire thing over again.

I've read The Power of Now; something that I need to instill in myself is that all we have is The Now. I tend to extrapolate into the future, which of course is hypothetical. Every book I read that expounds upon staying in the present moment seems to keep me centered in the present moment. I know that I am a lot better about it now than I used to be. Oh dear... that was reflecting upon the PAST! Course correction!

lol. thanks for making me giggle, mimi darling. :D i think it's human nature to go banging like a ping pong ball between past and future, lol, just like we all have the monkey mind constantly producing thoughts, lol. being mindful and working on maintaining our presence in the now is just like any other habit that we have to practice to get good at. :) i forget a lot, and sometimes i remember, which is better than never even noticing, like lots of people, lol.

The one time that I REALLY noticed that I was completely in the present was when I was driving my car home from running errands. I realized that I hadn't been having obsessive thoughts for a period of time, and that I had been completely aware of everything around me, and yet in sort of a trance. I had become The Observer that I hear so much about! It felt SO GOOD! And it also made me realize that I am still ME even without my Ego!

isn't it wonderful when it happens? i remember the first time for me, i was walking up seventh avenue in brooklyn, running my errands, doing my shopping, etc. as i arrived home, i realized i'd been in that zone. funny thing is, too often, the moment you realize it, that's the moment when you leave that state, lol, because then we tend to become attached to the idea of maintaining it, which totally destroys it, lol. :D
