So, this is a question for all of my fellow camera and photo editing fiends.

I am finding that the images I see on my computer screen are really quite different not only to what I see printed, but also different to how they appear on other computer screens.  Case in point, this photo.....

I saw pretty much what you described onscreen, but your image really came to life when I pulled it into Photoshop and viewed it there.

I suspect that when you try to print it out it is too dark and the highlights muddy up. To fix this on my own printed images I create a separate printing file where I decrease the Shadow amount (in the Shadow/Highlight pulldown menu) to between 20% and 35%. Then I adjust the upper setting to Levels to about 225. I have to play with those settings, of course. I often also have to decrease the Red in Selective Color. If an image really needs work I go into Curves. Hope that helps.

Additionally, Firefox and IE drain images of colour and detail. I didn't realise this until one of my LJ friends pointed it out.

I'm seeing what you describe also. I think that could be why though.

*sheepish look* I've never calibrated my desktop monitor. So I can't help you there. But I totally know what you're talking about regarding the difference in viewing pix on different monitors - I learned that really quick when I started to cap, then 'scrub' those caps. And the same when I got my digital camera ( ... )

I see pretty much what you discribed. Though, after looking at Deb's 'cleaned up' version, I saw more of street lights.

I do calibrate my monitor. Mainly because, for some reason, I can't manually change it very well. And so when I printed pictures, they came out look VERY different from what I see on the screen. So I bought a Spyder. It really seemed to help.

Which reminds me, I need to recalibrate.

I see what you see. However I have a video card and a gerneric old tube monitor. Colors seem to be richer with the tube monitor. In SS's shadow adjusted picture I can see more of the street lights.
