Well, I played in my first bout for the Mobile team yesterday. I didn't get as much play time as I would have on my team because I was only a sub, but it was freaking fun. I really want to get better at landing hits. I also need to work on endurance and recovering after falls. Perhaps some more Satan's mattresses or something. ANYWAY, it was a great time, Tallahassee is fun, but man are they some bitches on the rink! I'm used to seeing teams that trip and do dirty stuff like that, but this team punched! Like every girl on the Mobile team got punched! I got elbowed under my chin. We lost, but it was a pretty close game. 138 to 86? something like that. The only reason that there was that big of a difference was that the Mobile girls kept getting sent to the penalty box so Tallahassee was scoring up to 3 points for every person they passed.
Things I learned:
-if there are opponents in the penalty box, that increases the score. So when the jammer passes someone they are getting that point plus the points for the people in the box. This is also why the scores can get crazy high. The good part to this is that I know now that I want the other team to play dirty so they can get sent to the penalty box for more points!
-(this is something that had Barbie flabbergasted) Once your jammer is through the pack, your blockers should fall back. That way, the other team is out of play and if they hit the jammer it is out of play and a major penalty. This happened several times last night and worked well.
-Not all teams are fast. Mobile has fast players and can be a fast team, but overall they are a team that has their own pace. Memphis was super fast and when we talked with them all they were about was speed speed speed. Mobile was saying that there should only be speed if your jammer is fighting through the back and then slow down. What I learned from this is that we need to stop listening so much to teams as just taking it as open suggestions. Overall, we need to find our own strategy and pace that our team works best at. Then, when we go against another team we are comfortable in our own skin, and we can adjust to be a better match for our opponents.
-I also learned from Mobile that part of their strategy is to at least distract the opponents and the jammer will find a way through. I know that most of our jammers do that, but it relieves a worry in my mind. Instead of keeping up with my jammer, the other jammer and the blockers, all I need to do is keep the other blockers busy and watch the other jammer. Of course, with four people I still think that 3 and 4 should keep an eye out for the jammer and 1 and 2 should take care of the blockers, but that's something we'll work on in the future.
Tonight JT and I got a snack tray and some Mr. Pibb and went to the Veteran's Memorial park downtown and had a midnight picnic. It was really fun to just spontaneously go picnic and sit by a fountain and talk about our day. It's something that we did a lot when we first started dating, but we kinda lost sight of it as we got busy with stuff. I like spending time with JT when we don't talk about our different woes and just chill. I hope we can keep that up in the future. Makes things more light-hearted, which is what made us fall in love with each other in the first place. We weren't worried about all sorts of crap. We just wanted to be together and have fun.
