In the Philippines, during the summer of 1998, I had the privilege of spending about 8 days in the Southern Tagalog community of Hacienda Looc. It was roughly a 3-hour trip from Manila, and involved a long bus ride to Batangas, followed by a bumpy jeepney ride through the countryside to the port community of Lemery, from where we took a tiny boat
