mjl has a friend who needs someone to make a website for them and considering a bunch of you are tech savvy, perhaps one or two of you might be interested. Details below the cut:
A work colleague is looking for someone to make them a website...
Outline of what's needed (with identifying details removed for the LJ post) is below - basically it's not so much design, as we're pretty much hoping to avoid paying for that, but mostly actually putting the pages together, along with a fairly simple web form to register for access to some of the content and add/remove people from an email list, and setting things up so that fairly non-technical people can update and add content after the site is up.
[X website needed]
The structure (menu headings and subheadings) and content will be provided by the client (see attached documents).
The style/ layout should be attractive and accessible, and broadly consistent with that of the [another website], making use of existing [X] and [Y] logos and branding. A guide to the style and layout has already been prepared by the client (see attached powerpoint file)
The client will provide a collection of appropriate photographic images, which will be used to illustrate the website, in consultation with the designer
The website should have the following features (minimum)
1) various pdf documents will be made available for download, but surfers will need to register first using a web pro forma
2) surfers will also be able to register for regular newsletters/ updates etc.
(1 and 2 above could be integrated into a single interface if feasible)
3) the website will be updated regularly by the client - the design and interface should make it as straightforward as possible for this to be done with minimal training/ web skills.
Summary of tasks
1) implement the client's suggested design, adapting where necessary
2) upload all materials on to host server, and ensure functionality of web pro formas for registration etc.
3) provide induction to web administrator on updating
The tender will be awarded on the basis both of the cost estimate and the estimated time for completion.
Please submit all tenders by 5pm BST Monday 18th April to:

To go with this, there's a mock up of how the site should look (branding and main menu across the top, another load of links to things down the side, content in the rest of it) and a 70-odd page Word document with a load of text, tables and diagrams to make up the site.
Budget is in the thousands, but not in the tens of thousands. You don't need to be part of a big website designing company, but we will need a reasonably professional looking bid of a couple of pages and invoices and stuff - just as long as you've got some kind of letterhead really.
On a totally different note, what is up with the return of high tops? I saw someone wearing hot pink high tops the other day and nearly fell over from the mix of awfulness and awesomeness. I mean, hot pink shoes are (to me) awesome. HIGH TOPS, though?
My god, the 80s have officially returned, and not the good bits.
The worst thing is, I used to love them when I was little and have this knee-jerk urge from that six year old inside me to go buy a pair. In hot pink, of course. Ahem.
