Sometimes it was hard to believe that Minjung was a girl.
It wasn’t that she didn’t look like one, oh no. She was absolutely beautiful. Tall and lean with well defined legs, a soft face and large, alluring eyes that just sucked you right in. She didn’t say much, but when she did the soft alto was magnetic; audio charisma that kept one wanting to talk to her, even if she’d just smile and nod her head every now and again. Her hair always seemed to be perfect with wisps in just the right places, the ebony tresses framing those perfect features. Physically, yes, Minjung was very much female, and very much envied by some of the less fortunate girls in the school.
It was that this flawless young women didn’t seem to even acknowledge she was female. This was the girl who spent countless hours playing soccer with the boys and spending nearly all of them carrying her team. This was the girl who caused Gwiboon to throw a fit because she’d rather wear track pants and a baggy T-shirt than cute tops and figure-flattering jeans. This was the girl who would sit down and play video games with her older brother and kick his ass in the process. This was the girl who went shopping for cleats and sports gear instead of pumps and makeup.
She was flawless without effort, and Taeyeon couldn’t believe how hard she’d fallen for her.
Everyone was close with one another in their circle of friends, but the two had clicked for whatever reason and become a bit tighter with eachother than the others. Perhaps it was because, out of their group, Minjung was the next youngest after Taeyeon. It may have also been that Minjung just felt the overwhelming urge to protect the smaller girl, which was reassuring because Minjung wouldn’t take any shit if someone threatened their maknae. The reason that they both agreed on, however, was that they spent more time together than with the others. They only lived a block away from eachother, which meant they would often walk to and from school together, and have spur of the moment get-togethers.
Taeyeon wasn’t sure when it happened exactly; when she started viewing her best friend with different eyes. Maybe it was the subtle scent of the intoxicating perfume she wore that could only be picked up in close proximity. Maybe it was because, even though Minjung had announced she had a soccer game the next morning, she was here in the music room, waiting for Taeyeon to feel satisfied enough with her piano practice so that they could go home… and she never complained. She didn’t even look remotely impatient, sitting in a near by chair, the softest of smiles on that pretty face, just listening to the notes as the younger girl’s fingers stroked expertly at the keys. “… Unnie?” The younger girl spoke up, Minjung’s head tilting to one side. “It’s getting late.”
Long black threads were swept out of the older girl’s vision, the athletic beauty taking a moment to glance out the window and towards the setting sun. “It is.” Uphased by the indirect question, Minjung leaned forward, propping her elbows on her knees and resting her head in her hands. “Are you ready to go?” Taeyeon’s playing died off as her figures stopped moving. She paused, looking at the sheet music, then slowly shook her head. Parts were still shaky, but she didn’t want her friend to stay out longer than necessary, especially if she had to be up so early. A chair squeaked, and before Taeyeon knew it, a hand was on her shoulder, nudging her over so that the older girl could sit beside her.
That perfume… it smelt like honey and candied roses and Taeyeon struggled to stay put and not bury herself in Minjung’s neck. “The beginning?” It was an unspoken detail, but Taeyeon had picked up on Minjung’s musical talent. She had a gorgeous singing voice that she selfishly kept to herself, and while she claimed she could ‘plunk notes out’ on a piano, most people weren’t able to pull off fluid chords by plunking. The younger girl slowly nodded, and after being counted off, they began. Note after note, the keys were struck, Taeyeon following the sheet music, while Minjung improvised a harmony an octave below. She always seemed to play better when Minjung was with her, but right now… this was quite possibly the best she’d ever played.
Minjung’s shoulder lightly brushed her own, and for a moment Taeyeon thought her time would be thrown off. Amazingly enough, her hands remained steady, but oh, how her heart raced. That perfume, the warmth of her body, the flutter she felt in her stomach as their pinky fingers brushed on passing notes. She had to admit, she was impressed with herself. It seemed though, with each completed measure, touches became a bit more deliberate. There was plenty of space on their seat, so there was no reason for their legs to brush. The sheet music could also be clearly seen from both sides, so there wasn’t really a purpose for Minjung to lean in so close to her face, their cheeks nearly pressed against one another.
And she was sure there wasn’t a reason for her lips to brush her cheek. There was no logical explanation why she felt the need to make Taeyeon’s heart race; to make her cheeks darken and her fingers tremble dangerously, daring to falter and strike the notes imperfectly. By some act of God she managed to stay focused enough to finish. Minjung smiled after their duet came to its close, her arm sneaking around the other girl’s slim waist. “If your fingers moved as fast as your heart did,” she started, “you could play ‘Flight of the Bumblebee’ in your sleep.”
The smaller girl spared an awkward laugh. While she was now satisfied with her playing, part of her felt the need to lie and ask to go over it again. She just… didn’t want their time together to end for the night. Not just yet. “… Do you wanna come over to my house for a bit?” She bit her lip, glanced to the far wall, then back to the beautiful girl beside her, offering a much more legit smile this time. “I can make us some tea, and I made cupcake the other night…”
Minjung arched a brow. “Like… a tea party?”
“N-no!” Taeyeon laughed, shaking her head. “Just a snack. Tea party? That’s silly.”
“I like tea parties.”
Oh.
“Me too!” Another awkward laugh, and while she was sure Minjung noticed her horrendous cover up, the older girl replied to her with a heart warming smile. Taeyeon didn’t even like tea.
Minjung knew that too.
