Part 13

Satoshi

This is the real him! Seeing how excited and joyous he is when coursing out in the open ground, the corner of my lips couldn’t help but tilted upwards. It seems so fulfilling. Although I know the blood on his face is not his, but I still hated that color.

“Look at you, got so much blood on your face. It’s quite scary, you know - ” I raised my hands and carefully wiped off the almost dried blood stain on his face. But, seeing his stunning expressions made me realized how ambiguous my gesture was! I couldn’t help but feeling a burst of heat on my face. I casually turned around and went back to my original spot, hoping he wouldn’t notice my embarrassment.

It’s not far from the main camp here, but I did not dare to walk side by side with him anymore.

As for Sho’s father, my memories of him were only from back in the days when I was still a kid. He has a loyal and heroic character, a refreshing contrary to the flattering and fawning people so commonly seen in the palace. I guess only a father like him can raise a simple and straightforward son like Sho!

Dawn is in the horizon, but after fighting the first battle in my life, I am not at all sleepy. But he and his father have this rare opportunity to see each other after being apart for so many years, they must have a lot to catch up on. I don’t want him to have any regrets.

“How are you feeling? Still hanging in there?” Nino came into my tent with a bowl of medicine in his hand. I can already smell the bitterness. When we’re outside the palace we can be more casual and eliminate a lot of formalities.

“If I collapse after only one battle, I should have just stay in the palace and hold on to a medicine bottle!” I guess I can be humorous too sometimes. “Just put it down and go to get some rest yourself. I don’t want to warn you out just yet.” I waved my hand signaling him to go. After several days on the road and continuously taking care of me, he, too, is exhausted. He put the bowl of medicine down and dismissed himself.

The raid on the enemies this time was unexpectedly successful. Although we have a lot of soldiers wounded, but only very few seriously wounded and none died. But after this small victory, what’s coming are bigger and tough battles. We have the geographical advance but they have the edge on the size of the army. So neither side is really advantageous. I looked at the map on the table and focus on how we should arrange our limited number of soldiers, forgetting about the medicine sitting on the table.

“The medicine is getting cold - ” I almost jumped. I looked up and saw him already standing beside the table, holding the bowl of medicine.

“How - how come you’re here?” I quickly recomposed myself, then put up a strict face. “I told you to spend some time with your father, didn’t I? If not, then get some sleep! How can you fight a good battle if you don’t have enough rest?!” I said all these in one breath. “Do you think all battles are as easy as the one last night? We are in an army camp. You appeared in here all of a sudden. What if I pull my sword - ”

“You - ” He interrupted me with one word before I could finish. I raised my eyebrows waiting to hear what he had to say. He paused for a while, then said to me with a puzzling look. “Your Highness, I don’t think you have ever said so much to me all at once. I only said ‘Your medicine is getting cold’ and - you - did I freak you out?”

He got me speechless for a while, not knowing how to answer his question. I don’t know why I was panicky in one moment, then feeling delighted in the next. But he, seeing my dumbfounded look, actually laughed at me!

Sho

Papa and I spent some time together catching up on where we left off the last few years. He told him about what happened at home and I filled him in the things I experienced in the palace, well, most of the things. Some parts, especially those about him, I’d rather keep to myself. I love spending more time with Papa, but I couldn’t keep my mind off my concerns for him. Just recovered from a severe illness and battled for the first time, is be able to hold on? Did his stomach bother him? Finally, Papa noticed my being in a trance, but only thought I was tired about the long journey and battle, so he just asked me to go to sleep.

I went straight to his tent. He had not turned in yet, as expected. He was looking at the distribution map buried in deep thinking. There’s a bowl of medicine on the table, still seems to be quite hot. Looks like Nino didn’t leave too long ago.

Just casually reminding him to take his medicine, I didn’t think he would have such big reactions. Looking at his exaggerating expressions, I couldn’t resist my laughter. It’s so different from the palace. Satoshi, even though battlefields are full of killings and bloody, but you don’t need to wear your mask and constantly facing the people who looked like they want to take your life after all.

“What are you laughing at?” The more I saw his uneasy look, the more I wanted to laugh. “Sakurai Sho, I ask you what you’re laughing at?!”

“Come, drink your medicine first.” I pulled him up from his chair and put the bowl of medicine near his mouth, still laughing. He resisted a little, but eventually obeyed and emptied the bowl.

“Are you rebelling?!” He stared at me, his face really red. I wonder if it’s because the medicine was hot.

“I dare not.” I stopped my laughter, but still holding his hand. I took him to the bedside and pressed down his shoulders to make him sit down. “Your Highness, there are many advisers in the camp. Although they might not be as smart and knowledgeable as you are, but they can still managed. You, however, have not had much rest since we left the palace. So, I beg you now. Lie down and get a little sleep.” Before he could start to argue, I hurriedly continue to say. “If you can’t fall asleep, I can massage your legs. I won’t use too much strength. You just close your eyes and should fall asleep very soon!” I took out the tincture from my pocket and poured some on my hand.

“You carry this with you all the time?” He seemed to be surprised. Then he shook his head and said, “I’m really not tired - ” He wanted to stand up but I pressed him down again. Finally he compromised  and lied down. “If I really fall asleep, you go get some rest too. No need to keep massaging my legs.”

Even though he said he wasn’t tired, but he fell asleep just shortly after lying down. I lightened up the intensity of my massage, and couldn’t help keep glancing at him. Is it my imagination? I feel that the distance between us has really diminished. His eyes closed and his chest moved up and down slowly in rhythm with his breathings. This is how he should look in his age, pure and innocent. But I could only see it when he’s asleep when we were in the palace. All these years in the palace, my heart aches for his tolerating every day, for his being more mature than he should be for his age, for his overly cautious like walking on thin ice all the time. Satoshi, I wanted to ask you so many times. Have you had even one carefree day in your life before?

We didn’t want to drag things on for too long, so we decided to fight our deciding battle the next day, hoping that the Basarians had not recovered from the defeat they suffered from our raid. Papa would lure their troops to the open plain not far from our main camp, where we have a geographical advantage of being protected by the entrance into the valley. Win or lose, this open plain would most likely be our final battlefield.

To be continued.....
