Summary: Prince Satoshi and Sho finally got to spend some time together, honestly and openly to each other. They knew this wouldn't last forever for them, but they treasured every moment of it.
Part 17
Satoshi
Just like this, Nino used the excuse of more conveniently cared for two patients simultaneously without over tiring himself, he arranged for Sho and I to stay in the same tent. Not only that, he also solemnly declared that in order for us to recover quickly so as to not delay our return to the capital, no one was allowed to disturb us without his permission! Actually, my stomach hurt yesterday only because I was a little distressed and exhausted. It’s nothing serious. But then, I had the perfect reason to stay in the tent to care for Sho!
The news of our victory has already been sent back to the capital. We are just waiting for further commands from Father. At the meantime, I can take the chance to spend a few carefree days with him! Sho is not as pale anymore, but still weak from the loss of blood. His wound closes up and ruptures, ruptures and closes up. Even though he’s a fast recovery person, it’s most certain that it would leave behind a big scar on his chest. But he seemed to be quite happy when he heard about this. He said it’s a symbol of love! I gently pounded on his palm when he was leaning against me on the bed.
“Satoshi, is it real? I’m really not dreaming?” He widened his eyes to confirm with me again. His lips were still dry, still breathless, but better than before. “I really can hold your hand, lean on you and let you stay here hugging me?”
I nodded with an aching heart. Was I too heartless, too harsh on him? He sounded like someone who was finally given water in the desert. Sho, do you know that I never bear to be cruel to you? I was only stupidly thought that ignoring my feelings for you was my own imprisonment, torture and test…..
“Sho, ” I gently hold on to his hand, “Now this - but - if I have to let go of you in the future, will you blame me? Will you be hurting even more?” I asked him solemnly, because that’s the only reason why I was holding back. But he responded with an idiotic smile.
“Satoshi, don’t you understand? I had never doubted you. But you’re too suppressive. Your life, your feelings, everything -- you’re tolerating and constraining. I don’t want to -- see you like this. I can’t help you untie the knots in your heart, so I just force you - to utter - what’s in your heart. Do you blame me?” His look gradually changed from smirking to tendering. “Satoshi, I know, our love is out of boundary. It’s my all fault -- falling into the miserable hole and dragging you along. Therefore, no matter what decisions you make in the future, as long as you’re happy, I will not have any regrets.”
“You silly - ” I held back the tears in my eyes and lowered my body. Holding him gently in my arms, I used my kiss to stop those heart-breaking words.
When we received Father’s edict, Sho was well enough to stroll around on his horse. The Basarians capitulated and apologized. They expressed their sincere loyalty to our kingdom agreed to pay tribute every year. Father praised both Sho and me for such a big achievement in our young age and promised to award us when we got back. I would be the first among all the princes to be awarded with the Lord title. Sho was badly wounded to save my life and for his bravery and loyalty Father awarded him with a non-transferable Medal of Amnesty.
“What do you say? If we have to elope someday, do you think this medal will be useful?” He asked me half-jokingly. I, however, was stunned by this question….Medal of Amnesty…..Is it just a matter of life and death if we have to be together? May be he saw my nervousness, he immediately came next to be and said, “Hey, I was just joking. Satoshi, I am not asking for anything. Don’t put pressure on yourself, just do whatever you want to do!”
I looked at him, he forever has this innocent and pure look that it seems anything can be hurtful to him…..
Sho
Seeing him almost let go of the bridle, my heart skipped a beat. Actually, I was not joking at all, but fortunately I could still use this to hide my agitation. These past few days were the happiest I’ve ever been in my life. But the happier I am, the more worried and scared I become, scared of losing what I finally get, and realized that I am not a saint when it comes to love.
Satoshi took care of me day and night, not caring what other people thought of him. I wonder if that’s his way of making it up to me. To me, it really doesn’t matter. People like us who don’t know what might happen the next day can only use the present to numb the future. That being said, every time I saw him laughed as if he’s squandering his happiness in advance, I felt a sense of heartache.
“Sho, look! I’ve been wondering before. Riding a horse on such a large prairie must be feeling like flying, isn’t it? I could only use my imaginations when I drew out this scene. I was so jealous of you back then, since you must be doing that everyday since you were little - ” He pointed to the grassland in front of him, smiling like a shy and willful child. “So, you have to see my fly today! Don’t follow me!” With a loud cry, he had already sped out on his horseback. I looked at him who rode farther and farther away, my mind wandered into a trance. Is that really the Satoshi I knew? No bondage, indulgent, full of spirit! Oh gosh, if he can always be so happy and carefree, nothing else matters anymore, I am willing to do anything…..
Tired from the riding, Satoshi finally came back and rested with his tired horse by my side. His face was a little red, sweats on his forehead and tried to catch his breath. I followed his command and stayed at my original spot.
“You silly, I asked you not to come after me, but I didn’t ask you not to go and stay under the shade.” He put up a strict face like he’s blaming me but his voice was exceptionally gentle.
“I forgot.” I grinned. “I’ve never seen you so happy before. I forgot everything else.”
“You little idiot! You are not fully recovered yet. Do you want to get a heat stroke as well? I am a prince after all. Don’t get too used to me taking care of you!” Even though he said that, he showed even merrier smiles. I took a towel and wiped off his sweats.
“Well, it’s cold here at night. I have to be sick in order to get you to sleep with me!” I leaned towards him, pretending to be falling. Though he knew I was joking, since we were both on horsebacks, he’s afraid I would really fall, so he immediately grabbed me.
“Be careful! You want to hurt your brain some more?!” Seeing concerned look, I know the time when I got hurt in front of him really left a shadow in him. “Don’t ever joke about your own health!”
I tightened the bridle and stepped on the stirrup to jump over to his horseback. I sat behind him and wrapped my arms around his waist, resting my head on his shoulder. “Satoshi, I know now. For your sake, I will take good care of myself. Even if I can’t help you, the least I can do is not to make you worry about me. Therefore, you also have to promise me, take good care and protect yourself. If you have to live for other people, please think more of me. Remember that I am always here waiting for you. Don’t ever hurt yourself like it doesn’t matter, alright?”
He turned around and looked at me, as if he could see through me. His eyes are like fire in one moment and like water in the others, I couldn’t get my eyes off him. After a while, he nodded gently and relaxed his body on me. “Sho, thank you, thank you for letting me know that there’s still someone in this world that really takes me seriously, there’s still someone who’s thinking about me all the time.” Hearing his voice trembling again, I tightened my embrace.
“Satoshi, I am not the only one who’re concerned about you. At least there’s Nino!” A strange idea comes to my mind, but I didn’t say it out loud, just reminded him jokingly.
