Episode 32: Key to the Locked Memories

Apr 15, 2008 15:53

I haven't rewatched any of these episodes since episode 17... watching Gurren Lagann ended up getting priority.
So that's why I haven't really been commenting here recently. Most of these episodes I've ONLY watched once. This arc I have watched a couple times through though...

I took WAY TOO MANY screencaps for this episode. And since I'm including most of them here, a good majority are thumbcaps, with a few full size (well, 500x375) thrown in. So there should be no problems with loading. I hope...

If you need to watch this entry, see this post (community locked).

(psst... hover over images for snarky stupid comments)
And if you see this: this text is hidden, that means spoilers, so highlight to read.

Episode 32: 鍵をかけられた記憶
Episode 32: かぎ を かけられた きおく (I need to learn how to type these on my computer, having to find each one and copy-paste was slightly annoying)
Episode 32: The Memory That Was Locked (Wait, kagi means key, so isn't it "Key to the Locked Memories" or something like that?)

We start off this episode with the group looking at the forbidden box. Yuuri asks Flynn if she still wants it, but she shakes her head no. "I see. Makes sense." Yeah, like after witnessing all that uncontrollable destruction first hand, who would actually want it? The noise of shifting rocks alerts them to the arrival of Maxine! And he's still after the box... okay, so that answers that question...

Aiming for the key first, he attacks with his wires, aiming at Yuuri. Wolfram (of course) jumps in the way.

Have to keep loverboy safe after all. And after that touching line earlier "I'll fall with you", he'd better be protecting the guy...

Josak runs up next pulling out his sword and letting the wires wrap around it. Using this as leverage, he pulls Maxine off the ridge and Wolfram puts his sword to the guy's neck, effectively ending the fight.

Now that Maxine is subdued, Josak asks Yuuri what to do with the guy. "Unless you punish him now, you won't know when he'll cause a mess again." Yuuri gives this some consideration. And then we get a scene switch. A (rather small) search party is looking for Maxine who eventually finds him looking adorable with a large purple bow in his hair.

The guy promises payback for this, so I suppose we might see him again later...

Scene switch again. Now we see the group on a boat ship, heading back to Caloria. Wolfram is (of course) sick and Gisela asks if he's okay. He's on a boat and throwing up due to the seasickness he always gets... of course he's not okay...

We switch over to Murata and Yuuri, who have a short discussion on Wolfram:

Yuuri: Wolfram is seasick again?
Murata: He truly is a hard worker.
Yuuri: Wolfram? What for?
Murata: To make you a good king.
Yuuri: *is shocked*
Murata: But I hope his eagerness doesn't make him feel bitter.

*At this point, I started screencapping every single line, so I'm just going to place them as thumbcaps; with just a small portion of explanation.*

So, Yuuri repeats his earlier question to his Murata, who gives him the same answer. But Yuuri's having none of that this time, but before he can point out all of his reasons, Murata interrupts to explain further.

He has memories from previous lives, and one of them (first one?) was on Shin Makoku, where he was known as: the Daikenja (or Great Sage)

Their conversation continues in the thumbcaps:

Wow, that was a lot of screencaps... after that, the scene ends with them laughing; which didn't really work with the screencap. And then we get a scene switch.

The group has arrived at Caloria, only to see it in ruins. Yuuri realizes why, but Murata gives the explanation for us if we couldn't figure it out. Flynn realizes her actions helped create this mess, but Yuuri tells her there's something else to be done first.

Before Flynn can angst, there's other work that needs to be done, namely: helping the citizens of Caloria. Wolfram, of course, wonders why Mazoku are helping humans. He tries to tell Josak that he should say something to "that soft-hearted one"; but Josak has something else on his mind. Namely, if he has a change of clothes. "The white-robed angel. I think it is essential in a situation like this." When next we see him, he's managed to find a dress and prancing around in it while helping out.

Next we see a sequence of scenes of how the others are helping out the people of Caloria. Including Murata rounding up children (with a rather strange choice of words...), Josak doing something that involves pushing wooden stakes into the ground (putting up tents, maybe), and Flynn dishing out food (and getting an update on the situation from Baker).

Wolfram meanwhile, is sitting around outside a tent not helping (of course he's not, he's a selfish brat). But the tent is Gisela's med tent, and when she yells out he at first believes she's talking to him and snaps to attention. But then realizes she's not talking to him and peeks his head in to the tent to see she's talking to Dacascos (aka Dorcas). She tells Dacascos to get his ass moving and run and get rice. Dacascos runs out of the tent, but Wolfram stops him to question him calling Gisela "sergeant". Dacascos says "sergeant" is her nickname, but before he can explain further Gisela yells at both of them to get to work.

Next we see what Yuuri's been up to, handing out blankets and reassuring the kiddies that the "shakey thing" won't come again. Then he gets apprised of a few pieces of information from various sources: they are running low on food and medicine, and reinforcements will arrive soon.

Yuuri and others head up to a lookout point to watch for the promised reinforcements. A boat appears that Josak explains is a high-speed hydrofoil. Yuuri decides he'll have the soldiers on board help out and starts flagging down the ship. But then notices something strange... there's a whole lot of ships coming in!

Now at the half-way point, we begin with Günter. Günter runs up and hugs Yuuri, who at first expresses relief that Günter is okay. But then pushes him away and asks why the hell they brought so many military ships with them. Günter answers that it's because they cannot allow humans to possess one of the forbidden boxes.

Gwendal has shown up and notices Murata, so Josak introduces him. Which I have lots of screencaps for, so I'll do the same thing I did earlier.

The attention switches for a short while as Yuuri has told Günter and Gwendal what happened with the box. But then Yuuri hears a familiar voice: Morgif is here! He was being noisy so they brought him along. Murata talks a bit about how Morgif has changed from the past, and Yuuri thinks Morgif must have been creepy in the past.

Comedy break is over now, on to the serious stuff (rest assured this is still Kyou Kara Maou, there will still be comedic moments, just not so many). Yuuri asks the others to help him in assisting the people of Caloria. Günter says it's the humans fault for having opened the box. Murata intercedes, saying the people of Caloria are victims as well. Gwendal knows they can't deny what both Heika and Geika say, but do the people of Caloria really want the help of Mazoku?

Obediently, the Mazoku soldiers bring forward a whole bunch of supplies and Yuuri tells the humans that help has arrived. But the humans are nervous about the Mazoku and think they are there to bring further destruction. Yuuri starts to explain when Gwendal says it's useless because humans and Mazoku will never understand each other. Flynn forces her way through the crowd and tells everyone to calm down: they are not the enemy. But the townspeople are unbelieving; they are Mazoku who shouldn't exist. Flynn points out that they have already been helped by Mazoku.

Flynn continues with a speech on race and how humans can have evil souls, so Mazoku can have beautiful souls. "You people don't understand that?!" The standoff is resolved via the little girl from before. She walks up to Yuuri and asks if he really is Mazoku. He says he is and the little girl smiles and hugs Yuuri. "Then I'm not scared. I like you."

After seeing this, the Calorians agree to let the Mazoku help them. Yuuri thanks Flynn for letting them help, while she thanks him for helping. Wolfram (of course) interrupts their handholding with the usual shout of "cheater!", and the scene switches.

Now that they have time, Günter has something he'd like to talk with Yuuri about. He wants them all to return to Shin Makoku immediately. Yuuri says no, they can't leave Caloria how it is. Günter says the soldiers are helping out, and since the damage isn't too terrible, it won't take too long to restore the town. Yuuri is still worried about the box that Dai Shimaron has, but Gwendal says it can't be helped. "We will bring "The End of the Land" and the key back to Shin Makoku." Yuuri realizes he means Conrad's arm, but when asked says he's worried about the key being kept close to the box. "If we Mazoku supervise it, there will be no problem.

Scene switch to Yuuri sitting in front of a fire, reminiscing on Conrad and all that has happened recently. Suddenly a ghost image of Conrad shows up and talks to Yuuri. "You said it before. That you want to create a world where humans and Mazoku can peacefully coexist. Then your question is answered. My soul is always with you, Yuuri."

The ghost disappears as some children run by laughing. Following them, Yuuri sees Murata entertaining the children using the forbidden box. Yuuri asks what Murata thinks he's doing, playing around with something so dangerous. But Murata explains that without the key, the box is just that: a box. For some reason, the knowledge that the four boxes are JUST boxes without the keys makes Yuuri decide he wants to protect the kids' smiles. And when we see him next, he's using Morgif as a shovel to dig a hole.

Gwendal and Wolfram show up as Yuuri is digging, and Gwendal asks if Yuuri is making a grave. Yuuri grabs Conrad and refuses to relinquish it, saying Conrad wouldn't want his arm used to put pressure on the humans. Gwendal tells him not to get emotional and hand over the key. Yuuri backs away from Gwendal as Wolfram calls out to Gwendal, placing himself in-between them and drawing his sword to block Gwendal. He apologizes for going against Gwendal because of his sentimentality, but wants Yuuri to have Conrad's arm to give it a proper burial; and says Yuuri should understand Conrad feelings better than anyone. Yuuri is quite touched by this display from Wolfram. Gwendal turns his back on them and tells them there's a proper procedure for getting rid of the key. Günter appears and explains that they need to perform a ritual so that the arm can never be used as a key again. Yuuri thanks them and runs off, leaving Gwendal and Günter alone to kiss talk about how much they love each other about Gwendal's reluctance to have Conrad's arm destroyed. "Don't get emotional, right? It's true that we Mazoku do need the key, but you were so attached to this... because it hurts you to see your brother's arm destroyed. Right?" Gwendal walks off, refusing to agree but saying it's an admirable opinion. (Sorry I didn't screencap this part...)

As morning is in full force, we hear what sounds like tribal music and see some of the Mazoku ships in formation upon the water. The soldiers on board are doing some strange sort of dance that Yuuri says is rather awkward. Günter explains that it's the Mazoku Symphony number 666, and also that it is time to start the ritual. Yuuri and the others walk toward the stern (I think) of the ship and Yuuri sets down the case with Conrad's arm.

Yuuri says some final words before finishing the funeral ritual. "We'll meet again, right?" Gwendal says of course they will, and Yuuri seemingly asks Conrad "isn't that right?" They then lower the arm into the sea, and we get some nice shots of the others being depressed.

The quiet ritual is interrupted by a soldier yelling something about another ship approaching. Yuuri wonders if it's more Mazoku reinforcements, but the lookout reports it being a Dai Shimaron ship. It's a representative here to inform the Calorians that the annual World's Best Fighter Knockout Tournament will be taking place shortly.

Meanwhile, in what we must assume is Dai Shimaron, we see lots of people arriving by ship for this tournament. One in particular is asked by sailor if he has any luggage. The mysterious responds by lifting away his cloak and showing his sword, claiming it as his only luggage. The sailor wonders if he's a government official there to compete as a warrior. The man turns slightly, revealing himself and saying "Only the Maou can decide what will happen."

And now we are finally at the end of this very long recap/summary. Now, on to my thoughts.

There are a couple of major important events in this episode: Murata's revelation and Conrad's funeral. There are some other, smaller things that happen and are somewhat important; but those two are the most important events.

First I want to touch on Conrad's funeral. Now that things have calmed down they are able to do this. But it's strange considering what we know from episode 35 namely the fact that Conrad is alive. And they talk about meeting with him again, but how do they know that they will? Is it because the body was never found? Maybe he got carted off by the Dai Shimaron forces or something? Or do they mean meeting him in whatever afterlife exists for Mazoku? What do you guys think?

Anyway, moving away from that line of thought, we move over to one of the other major events of this episode: Murata's revelation on his true identity.

Up until this moment (and especially in this arc) we've had some interesting things come from Murata. First the fact that he's always nearby when Yuuri gets transported to Shin Makoku, then there's his ominous "if you go on a journey" in episode 4, his teasing Yuuri in episode 8 "you're actually the leader type ... I'm serious. Everyone follows you.", in the same episode he seems worried when Yuuri falls in (and of course that's the arc when Yuuri gets kidnapped), in episode 12 he cheers Yuuri on when he's offered to go pet Bandou-kun (maybe he knew they wanted Yuuri back in Shin Makoku). And as I said, in this arc he's demonstrated that he knows far too much for a regular high school student.

But now we know the reason for all the strangeness. I, unfortunately, spoiled myself on this little secret. Which sucks majorly because it would have been so much more fun to wonder WTF was going on with him. Did anyone out there NOT know before seeing this episode? What were your thoughts and theories on Murata before this was revealed? (It kinda sucks that I screw myself with spoilers so much... there's so much speculation I end up missing out on)

Some smaller things that are mentioned:

• The forbidden boxes are JUST boxes without the keys. This means that those remaining boxes could literally be ANYWHERE and used for anything. Thankfully all of the boxes seem to have colourful markings on them; except for the one in the back, that one seems to have no markings on it. So one of them may be rather hard to find and identify because of lack of markings.

• Another smaller yet still important event is the humans accepting the help of the Mazoku. Since we know relationships between the two are quite strange, that they accepted the help is very important. And it shows not only how much Yuuri can influence people, but how much a simple child can. After all, had that little girl declared she was frightened of Yuuri; things could turned out much worse. People can be very protective of children, and with a mob of people... there could very well have been a battle.

• There's probably some other things I could mention, but I think I'll finish with this. Next will be a trip into Dai Shimaron!
