Episode 35: The Ground on which Snow Falls

If you need to watch the episode, check out this post (community locked) for information!

Last episode, we left off in the Big Shimaron arena (anyone else think the architecture of the stadium is pretty cool?), with Yozak having just thrown his match and Adalbert not liking that one bit.

Also, Yuuri’s pretty concerned. And he probably should be, what with his turn coming up next.

We see Belal seated on this Throne of Evil, and the mysteriously hot! figure in the long white coat comes up beside him. Belal muses that he never thought the Caloria representatives would last three rounds, but it adds to the excitement.

And the mysterious figure is revealed to be:

Conrart! Although most of us kind of got that when he said “Yuuri” at the end of ep 34 in that adorably wistful way. But just in case!

Belal tells Conrart to “take care of it.” He bows and agrees to do so.

Just in case the drama was overtaking the lovely crack we now see Celi in her Full Sexy Heroine of Justice Getup, going on about how she wants Anissina to write a short story about her.

Maxine wants to know who the “gaudy woman” is. Celi takes offense, Dakascos is scared.

Celi cracks her whip and shows Maxine the cruelty of a woman scorned! Fittingly, he falls at her feet in meek boot-licking supplication. ^_^

Some men appear, take Celi’s whip reverently, and then surround Maxine in 5000 yards of rope in a span of 2 seconds. Impressive! Maxine gets carted off to meet his fate.

A blondie with a moustache is applauding Celi’s prowess and sexiness. “Thanks, Fan-fan!” she says.

Dakascos is confused.

The man in white introduces himself as Stefan Fanberlain. (Ah, hence the FanFan. Cute, Celi!) Celi says that he’s a big time businessman in Big Shimaron. But, his foremost desire, he says, is to win the heart of Lady Celi! How sweet! <3

Celi wonders who the lovely young lady is.

And Dakascos remembers: Oh, right! His Majesty is in danger!

Cut back to the Main Event. Wolfram and Yozak are seriously concerned about Yuuri having to fight.

Yuuri: “EH? Who, me?” Wolfram: “You wimp!”

Slowly, Yuuri reasons out that because Wolfram won and Yozak lost on purpose to save Flynn from Maxine, that means he has to fight! I just love “Last Episode in Review” lines from the cast!

Wolfram wants Yuuri to withdrawal since he’d lose to save Flynn anyway. But wait! Murata spies with his little eye something…red! And sexy!

Hooray, Celi’s saved the day! Now Yuuri can fight with all his ability! …oh, wait. Wolfram tries to talk him out of it, due to his innate wimpiness and all, while Murata watches intently.

But Yuuri is resolute! Besides, he has Morgif!

…Er. What he meant was, he’ll do his best to handle it alone.

Yuuri feels like since Wolfram did his best even when he was sick and Yozak had to lose on purpose for the Greater Good, he wants to do his best too.

Murata smiles and says he’s stubborn about things like this. He asks if they’ll have faith in the Demon King.

Wolfram pulls an adorable thoughtful face and says that Yuuri is a wimp, but he’s not a hopeless case.

Yozak actually kind of likes that Yuuri isn’t very Kingly. But if he’s in danger, Yozak will do what he needs to do to stop it. (*squee!* protectiveness!)

Even T-zou looks a bit nervous.

Yuuri steps out, amidst much cheering, and waves at Celi to thank them.

Celi asks about finding the box, and FanFan says that Belal in his quest to Rule the World gained one of the Forbidden Boxes. And FanFan agrees to help the Mazoku find it! After all, he can’t deny a request from his beloved!

And besides, he sells weaponry and armor. If Belal controls the world, he loses business!

FanFan agrees to lead everyone to the treasure vault to swap the Forbidden Box for Murata’s Extra Special Box. XD

Flynn starts to go, too, but Celi says to leave it to the men while they have a woman to woman talk. For instance, Flynn, do you have a boyfriend?

Hearing that Flynn’s husband died, Celi sees a prime chance to play matchmaker! …Unless Flynn already has someone in mind…?

And we see a cameo of Yuuri stretching. *grins* But no, sadly, Flynn is already married to Caloria.

Celi thinks that’s commandable, because women who are devoted to their cause are beautiful.

She tells Flynn that she once ruled a country, and now is a hunter for love. But, back then, she didn’t know who she was.

She has no mind for politics, and so left it up to her older brother. But, now she really regrets that choice.

Celi asks Flynn to remember this: “Whether by bloodline, vote, or prophecy, a quirk of fate will sometimes oblige one to take the throne. No matter the circumstances that made you a leader, there is a reason for it. Don’t forget that and trust everything to the hands of others. Inside of you, Flynn, there is a reason. Find it. And then use every part of your body and spirit to protect your country. Don’t become like me.”

Flynn is grateful and encouraged! And Celi flops back into Fun and Cute Mode because a female leader with many lovers is just adorable!

Back on the arena floor, Morgif is moaning again. Yuuri looks at him dubiously.

Adalbert is pleased that Yuuri showed himself. But, he wonders, who is this kid that looks him straight in the eye with his naïve but righteous arguments?

Adalbert prepares to go out and cut Yuuri into tiny bite-sized chunks. But! He is derailed by the guard, who says that no athlete can take a second turn fighting.

There is the bang of a door opening, and Conrart appears! (Sadly, sans the hot white coat.)

Adalbert is decently surprised.

Yuuri is shaking from the cold, but then looks up to see Conrart, with both his arms, wearing the colors of Dai Shimaron.

Everyone is shocked.

Yuuri tries to run to him, but trips and falls.

Conrart offers him a hand and his gorgeous gentle smile.

Yuuri gets to his feet shakily, still wondering if it’s really him. And he has a left arm!

Yes, although he’s sorry to say it isn’t the same arm that held Yuuri. OMG SQUEE!

From the dugout (*rimshot*) Yozak yells for Yuuri to keep away from Conrart. But why, Yuuri asks. It’s Conrart!

Yozak, looking a bit shell-shocked himself, tells Yuuri that Conrart is the third opponent. The one who’s going to fight him.

Yuuri looks at Conrart’s uniform, then his sweet caring eyes (*is so very dead from fangirl meltdown*)

Yozak and Wolfram try to run out, but a gate falls, keeping them firmly in the dugout. Also, the doors are locked. Murata thinks that they don’t want them to interfere.

Wolfram calls out for Yuuri in that adorable nervous way. ^^

Yuuri asks why Conrart is allied with Big Shimaron. Conrart says that this is originally his homeland. AND THEY’RE STILL HOLDING HANDS, YAY!!!

Conrart would like Yuuri to withdrawal, but Yuuri isn’t having that.

Conrart knew he would say that, he says with a smile. And then a call is made to begin the fight and his battle face comes out. *melts*

Slowly, Conrart draws his sword. Wolfram calls from the dugout and he calls Conrart by his name now! *flails*.

Dismayed, Yuuri notices that he’s really serious. Conrart replies that he represents Big Shimaron right now. Yuuri draws Morgif, wearing his sad face. *hugs him*

Back with the Fake Box, FanFan dismisses the Treasure Vault guards with a bogus story about Belal asking for a delivery. Smooth, FanFan!

They gain entry to the vault, and Dakascos worries that if FanFan faces consequences for doing this, Celi’s wrath will me a sight to remember. But no time for that, FanFan has spotted the box!

Celi watches her presumed-dead son and her King ready to fight, lamenting that the twist of fate is too cruel.

Yuuri attacks, Conrart easily dodges and gives Yuuri advice about relaxing his shoulders before throwing him off.

Yuuri knows he’s no match for Conrart, so Conrart again asks him to withdrawal. Yuuri refuses and tells Conrart to take off that uniform which I’m sure we’d ALL like to see. Must…resist…innuendo…during dramatic moment! and come back to his side.

Conrart says that he can’t.

Yuuri asks why, while attacking again.

Back in the dugout, T-zou is taking matters into his own hands by ramming the gate blocking them from Yuuri. Yozak thinks it’s a jolly idea and joins in.

Belal chuckles evilly and says that as long as Conrart remains in his country, the world will be his! Or at least his supply of Hot will have increased.

Yuuri keeps hacking at Conrart, who blocks him easily. Yuuri wants to know why Conrart is going easy on his enemy, and Conrart says that he can’t possibly harm Yuuri, again urging him to withdrawal. Yuuri keeps at it, screaming that he doesn’t understand.

Adalbert fumes from his dugout, pissed that Conrart’s going easy on Yuuri.

Yuuri’s getting exhausted from hefting Morgif around, and Conrart tells him “Your Majesty, you cannot beat me in a swordfight.” Yuuri tells his Godfather not to call him “Your Majesty.”

Adalbert takes a swing at Yuuri, and Conrat blocks it.

Conrart demands to know what Adalbert’s doing, and Adalbert demands the same of Conrart. Adalbert doesn’t much care for Conrart’s opinions, but he has unfinished business with Yuuri.

Conrart asks Adalbert if such an act would make Julia happy.

Adalbert uses magic to conjure huge stalagmites from the ground.

Wolfram is shocked that Adalbert is using human Esoteric Magic.

With Conrart fairly well trapped in an earthen prison, Adalbert takes a thwack at Yuuri and throws him to the ground.

Adalbert looms over him, but Yuuri is exhausted.

Morgif seems to be pulling Yuuri around, helping him to dodge Adalbert’s attacks.

Conrart climbs out of the stalagmite prison and runs over, calling Yuuri’s name.

Yuuri, as he is lugged around by his sword, wonders how his happened. How did finding Conrart, something that made him so happy, end up like this? Why isn’t Conrart by his side? (*cries hysterically*)

We see an image of Julia crying.

Adalbert takes aim to attack Yuuri, and Conrart shouts, “Do you want to kill Julia? Yuuri has Julia’s soul!”

Adalbert stops dead in his tracks.

Flashbacks of Julia that are too sweet not to cap ensue.

And Yuuri realizes that he has Julia’s soul.

And then the end of the episode. And I wipe my tears and prepare for the next. ^_^

My attempts at being profound! On we go.

First, I think it’s amazing that Celi is able to show some of her more serious and insightful side here, and also show regret for her decisions as the Maou. She really gives Flynn a beautiful speech about leading her country and not doubting herself as a ruler. It shows another side to the fabulous and fun Celi-sama and I love it. *hearts*

Also, her and FanFan are so adorable together, yes? He seems like a very good person and more than just a plot device, which I think is cool. *waves “I &hearts Secondary Characters” flag*

Wolfram and Yozak and Murata and T-zou each worrying for Yuuri in his own way is so lovely to me! Wolfram and Yozak especially seem to be believing more and more in Yuuri and his good heart. While no one’s happy, particularly, about Yuuri putting himself in danger, they are able to understand and respect his reasons for doing so. He’s becoming more and more like a King - but his own kind of King, one that isn’t afraid to stand up for what he believes even if it means putting himself on the line. *is such a Yuuri fangirl*

And then it happens: Conrart appears, and he’s wearing Belal’s colors and not Yuuri’s.

*deep breath* This episode is something that is really special for me, not just because I’m an angst-whore but because of all the different feelings that clash at once. Yuuri’s happiness and shock at seeing Conrart alive and with both arms turns into dread when he realizes that Conrart is his opponent for the third fight and then becomes anguish when they have to fight. But through it all, he refuses to give up because he believes so strongly in what he came to do. Yuuri can’t understand why Conrart would leave him, but he doesn’t fold or waver from his course.

The slight bit we see of Wolfram and Yozak during this part really shows their shock and pain at being betrayed, and their fear for what it means for Yuuri. For Wolfram, to regain the brother he thought he’d lost only to have it end up like this…an Yozak, for the person who helped him to find a place in Shin Makoku to betray his country and do basically what Adalbert did...I think the brief glimpses of their faces really show it all. *loves*

I keep thinking about what Conrart must be feeling in this episode. He obviously believes that he must do what he’s doing, but still he cannot bring himself to fight Yuuri and keeps trying to talk him into withdrawing. Meanwhile, he hears Yozak and Wolfram from the sidelines and knows that he is probably giving up their trust by his actions. It so courageous to me for him to be able to stand there and dodge Yuuri’s attacks and listen to Yozak tell Yuuri to get away and still not change his mind. *awed*

And then a new dimension is added as Adalbert joins the fray and attacks Yuuri and then Conrart, not understanding why Conrart would ally with Big Shimaron only to refuse to fight Yuuri. And still, Conrart protects Yuuri, first with his sword and then by shouting that Yuuri has Julia’s soul, and to kill him is to kill Julia.

I think it’s a great touch that we don’t see Yuuri’s face at the end, there, after he realizes the full meaning of what Conrart has said. I can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking - is he wondering if everyone only loves and follows him because he has Julia’s soul? Is he afraid that everything he’s done and all the support he’s gotten is only because of who his soul belonged to in a prior life? Is he thinking that Conrart is only protecting him so that Julia won’t get killed again? I can’t even fathom it.

Okay, enough from the peanut gallery (aka me). Fangirling, please! XD

Next episode: Episode 36, “Farewell, Conrad,” hosted by yours truly! (in which Lena will try not to sob quite so much but is not optimistic.)
