Episode 40: For The Bond

If you need to watch the epsiode, go here (Community Locked).

So our episode opens with Yuuri still in Francshire, staring wistfully out of the window of Leila’s house as he thinks of Conrart.

Yuuri: O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo?

We then see that the man in question is somewhere in Francshire as well, in the midst of the camp set up by the Big Simaron soldiers.

Cue title.

The scene then changes to Cabalcade where Gwendal tells Lady Celi that Big Simaron has invaded Francshire. He then recieves a messenger pigeon, presumably from Yozak.

Meanwhile,Antoine does not take the news of the invasion of his country very well.

Elsewhere, Yuuri and co. have turfed Leila’s little brother out of his Forbidden Box bed. He seems to like the replacement, though, apparently because Yozak has made it himself.

Yozak tells Yuuri and Wolfram that preparations have been made for their departure, and they then see Huber, Murata and Gunter bringing a cart of vegetables along with them.

Apparently the veggies are souvenirs from Leila’s family. Yuuri asks them where they plan to put the Box, and Murata unveils his Cunning Plan: hide the Box among the vegetables, and no one will ever, ever be the wiser!

Murata and Yuuri seem quite pleased with this strategem. Wolfram, however, is not so enthused.

Leila then says that the country is filled with soldiers from Big Simaron, and the only safe places are little out of the way farming villages like they one they were in right now.

Yozak: Um, not so much.

And right on cue, a gazillion Big Simaron soldiers round the hill with horses and banners and flags. Leila is shocked, and wonders how they could’ve known about the village. Um, hello? It was your wimpy King Antoine who sold you out to save his skin!

And it’s Conrart heading up the soldiers, which gives everyone another chance to practise their Looks of Shock and Betrayal.

He orders them to sheathe their weapons, predictably, they do not.

Yuuri: What are you doing here, Conrad?

Well duh, he’s here for the Box.

‘What box?’ Murata asks. ‘All we have here are vegetables!’

Oops.

Surrender the box, Conrart says. We have you surrounded, and I do not want to resort to violence.

‘Are you really not going to return to us?’ Yuuri asks.

‘I believe I already told you this. The next time we meet, I really will be your enemy.’

Wolfram can’t take it anymore, and comes forward to challenge Conrart. Now would be a good time to revert to calling him Weller, dontcha think? *shakes head at the silly boy*

He lunges at his brother with his sword, only to fall back because Conrart has got a houseki/esoteric stone.

It seems they have no choice but to fight, and everyone (except for Wolfram, who is temporarily paralysed, and Yuuri, who is too much of a wimp :P) draw their swords and get ready to defend the Box with their lives.

‘Throw down your weapons.’

Um, what, Murata?

‘We’ll lose, and it’s very important that we all survive. There’ll be other opportunities.’

Cue Yuuri’s sad but determined face.

We then see the Box, and Yuuri and co. being led down a narrow mountain path on horses. Yozak chooses his moment (I love how he asks Murata if he should go for it before he tries anything XD) and escapes.

Mr. Late Realisation slowly comprehends his sword has been taken.

Which explains how Yozak got that sword that he’s now challenging Conrart with. Yuuri asks him to stop, but Yozak refuses, saying that he must know why his Captain betrayed his King.

They fight.

That’s a weak attacks, Yozak says. Tell me the truth, did you really betray King Yuuri?

Conrart promptly takes the opportunity to force him off the cliff.

And OMG, but Yozak is badly drawn in this shot. *points at his feet and giggles*

Conrart looks heartbroken. Is he feeling remorse? Pangs of guilt, maybe?

Everyone else is not too happy, either. Many tears are shed. Just when Murata thinks Yuuri is going to go all Maou on Conrart, he looks up with tears in his eyes, and a heartbreaking ‘Why?’

Gah, how could you withstand that face, Conrart? You are a strong man.

They are now in front of a ‘beautiful’ mountain, and Murata and co. have concluded that they will all probably be executed. Yuuri comes to the sad realisation that Conrart really has betrayed them Captain Obvious strikes again but Leila is not so sure, for some strange reason.

Conrart then asks them to treasure the scenery, because the Big Simaron prisons? Not so much with the pretty.

He then takes the opportunity to give them a small geography lesson. Just over that mountain is the Cabalcade border, he tells them. There don’t seem to be many guards. Cue realisation from Murata, Yuuri and Gunter. If they just create enough of a commotion here…

And what exactly are the Big Simaron soldiers doing during this little exchange? Not one of them got a little suspicious that their leader seems to be practically handing an escape plan to the prisoners?

Just when everyone is all confused and wondering if Conrart really is trying to help them escape…oh noes! It’s King Belal in this world’s version of a pimp hat with a gazillion soldiers!

Belal congratulates Conrart on his achievements: capturing the Box, as well as the Maou. He steps out of his metal carriage seriously, who on earth drives around in a metal carriage? and inspects the box. Commence Belal gloating.

And now that you have the Maou, negotiations with Shin Makoku would be to your advantage, Conrart says.

Belal: What negotiations? Just kill the little snot.

Conrart is shocked. But really, what did you expect when you joined the villain’s team? Sometimes you’re as naïve as Yuuri. He soon recovers, though, and agrees when Belal orders him to be the one to do it.

The scene is set.

No one can really believe Conrart is going to go through with it, though, even when he takes Morgif in his hands and steps up to Yuuri, who is kneeling down and facing him.

Yuuri can’t quite seem to believe it-that the man who named him, who always protected him-is now going to kill him.

Wolfram: Show them the power of the Maou, Yuuri!

‘Does your Majesty believe in time?’ Yuuri only looks up at Conrart with that same lost look. ‘Time gives us happiness, but it can also take everything away from us. During the fifteen years that I waited for your Majesty to grow up and come into this world, time gave me happiness every day. And after you came into this world…’

Conrart draws the sword.

‘This is what I have come to, after all the time that I have been with you.’

And he cuts Yuuri’s ropes.

He fights off a few Big Simaron soldiers, and cuts Wolfram’s ropes, too (who looks absolutely shocked) and orders his brother to ‘open up an escape path’.

Belal: Attack the Maou and the traitor!

Soldiers: *fire arrows*

Yuuri: Are you okay, Boromir Conrad?

Conrart chooses this moment to declare his real allegiance: ‘My name is Lord Conrart Weller…I have sworn my entire life to Shin Makoku’s twenty seventh Maou, King Yuuri.’

Suddenly, huge big rocks fall out of the sky. It’s Gwendal and Cecile, with the Shin Makoku army…and Yozak! Who is magically undead, yay! And apparently, he was the one to lead the army to Yuuri and co., all according to the ‘Captain’s’ plan.

Belal realises that he can’t fight against allied forces from Shin Makoku and Cabalcade…and even from Francshire because apparently Antoine has finally grown a pair and orders a change of plan.

‘Argh’, says a wounded Conrart. ‘This is my atonement for causing your Majesty such pain.’

‘I didn’t need you to go this far’, Yuuri replies. ‘It’s enough that you’ve come back.’

Aw. *melts*

Belal: Cut off Conrart’s arm and open the Box!

Murata: Don’t worry, everyone, that’s the fake End of the Wind!

Belal: WTF?!

Murata: LOL. Pwned!

Wolfram, Huber and Gunter go to recover the other Box (In the Frozen Soil of Hellfire) and just before he leaves, Wolfram tells Conrart not to die. *squees at the brother love*

Apparently Anissina’s been ‘improving’ the swords in Shin Makoku, because these ones can cut metal. Wolfram and co. have no trouble getting the Box out of its metal container, and Belal has to retreat in a hurry.

The scene now changes to later, and we see the entire army and everyone else gathered around someone on the ground.

Oh noes! It’s Conrart, and he’s badly hurt.

Yozak: You really pushed me off the cliff, man. That hurt.

Conrart: I trusted you would dodge well.

Gwendal says that he was able to come with the army because of the messenger pigeon they received, but if Yozak wasn’t there to guide them, they might not have made it in time.

Yuuri ignores them all to ask Conrart if he’ll be coming back to Shin Makoku with them.

Conrart: I cannot. I have already betrayed your majesty once.

Yuuri says that no one blames him for that. *melts*

Conrart: Besides, I could not fulfill the role given to me by the Shinou…

Yuuri is shocked to hear this and demands to know if this is why Conrart betrayed him. International Man of Mystery Murata doesn’t seem all that surprised, however.

Conrart seems to be fading away now, and he closes his eyes mid sentence. Wolfram looks shocked and saddened, but Leila screams at Conrart that he cannot die here, because it would make Yuuri sad. Besides, isn’t it his duty to help his king create a world without conflict?

Evidently Yuuri doesn’t have too much faith in Leila’s Speech Therapy, because he starts to heal Conrart.

You’ve had enough, Celi says. Come back, Jack Conrart.

‘I understand’, Conrart says, with tears in his eyes, although it’s unclear whether he’s speaking to her, himself, Yuuri or Leila.

And there the episode ends.

Next up, episode 41, hosted by twyxdust of the fabulous screenshots! Same Bat time, same Bat channel!

A moment to talk about the changed opening and closing themes. I really like the season two opening, mostly because of that fabulous shot of all three Brothers Hot together…*sighs blissfully* And I love the new ending theme, song and animation style both. =)

So the Conrart Betrayal Arc is finally drawing to a close, and it turns out that Conrart had pulled a Snape on us.

I found it really ironic that Belal would call Conrad a traitor. He had certainly had no compunctions about taking in the man who had (supposedly) betrayed his own country, quickly letting him into his inner circle. Then when his new blue eyed boy turns around and stabs him in the back, he acts all betrayed and upset!

Now, a smart villain would’ve been atleast a little bit suspicious-if Conrart could betray Shin Makoku; where he had lived since he was sixteen-for the country his father was a fugitive from-what was to stop him from double crossing Belal, as well?

After all, Conrart’s own arm is the key, he could’ve easily made off with the Box and proved a real threat to Belal and his plans of World Domination.

Oh, Belal, Belal. Clearly you are not the sharpest knife in the drawer. *shakes head*

And about the rocks raining down on Belal and his soldiers. Did anyone else think they were maybe the result of Gwendal and a whole squadron of Earth maryokou users specially trained for the purpose? Or perhaps I being too fanciful, and it was probably the result of one of Anissina’s inventions (Catapult-kun?)

Also, where did this Francshire army turn up from? Didn’t Leila say they don’t have one just in the previous episode? *scratches head*

So obviously Murata’s ‘What Box? These are just veg-oopsie’ thing was all an act. And he probably buried the real Box somewhere on Leila's farm-because as secretive as he is, I don't think he told even Gunter and Huber what he had planned-before showing up with the veggies. Man, the guy is positively clairvoyant sometimes, which would be scary if it wasn’t so damned cool. Smart, sneaky guys for the win! =)

And I love how Yozak almost asks him for permission before wriggling out of his ropes on the mountain and escaping. I’m really beginning to love the relationship between these two, they seem to have built up a great rapport in a really short span of time.

Coming to the forefront of the episode, of course, were Conrart’s relationships with everyone. When Yozak says he brought the army ‘like I promised, Captain’, does this mean he had guessed Conrart was a double agent all along? Or is pushing a comrade off a cliff Shin Makoku Super Sekrit Spy Code for “I’m actually on your side, run and get Gwendal and the army, quick!”

And before Conrart’s volte face, it certainly seemed like Yuuri’s trustful nature had finally gotten him into serious trouble. Both he and Wolfram had believed in Conrart’s innocence for so long, insisting that there must be a reason for him to do as he did, and then that trust was totally broken when (everyone thought) Yozak was killed. Yuuri’s face as he looked up at Conrart was just…ack. *incoherence* I don’t know how Conrart could have withstood it.

And then that little boy lost look when he thought Conrart was going to kill him with his own sword…gah.

Speaking of which, how is it that Conrart was able to handle the sword? I thought Morgif couldn’t be used by anyone except the Maou? Or is that only when he’s in his ‘powered’ state, with that gem thingy (that Yuuri gave to Yozak) in his head?

I shall stop with the questions now. :P

One final thing: much gratitude to lelandlancaster, chasingphantoms and neocloud9 for helping me get over my technical ineptitude with making screencaps. =)
