If you need to watch the episode, check out this post (community locked) for information!

Disclaimer: I am a huge - HUGE - Gwendal fangirl, which is why I gave myself this episode. Prepare yourselves for massive Gwendal-love!

Onward!

We open with…a very cool lamp! (Can you tell I’m WAY too psyched about doing this episode?) Oh wait, it’s a cool lamp on the desk of young!annoyed!Gwendal. lucky lamp

And why is Gwen annoyed? Well, there are people out there having fun! The very idea!

Gwendal confronts the Fun-Having Hoodlums who are apparently taking their stash of booze to get hammered with Dan Hiri (or Dunheely if you prefer, but I like Dan Hiri better :P).

Gwendal stomps away, hating Dan Hiri and fulfilling his role and the Patron Saint of Sticks in the Mud.

The next day, Celi watches as a remarkably not-hungover Dan Hiri instructs a remarkably and near-sinfully cute Chibi!Conrart on swordplay. *squees so high only her dogs can hear it*

Some random boys call Conrart over and after flashing some adorable puppy eyes at his daddy, he scampers off with them.

Celi remarks that it’s nice to be away from the castle and just be a family, and Dan Hiri turns on the Flirt Power now we know where Conrart gets it!

Celi tries to lay on his shoulder but he walks away, leaving her to stumble.

What did he see? Why Chibi!Gwen, of course! Sorry Celi, but the sexiness, it is no comparison!

Dan Hiri asks Gwen to spar with him. Gwen turns on his Glare Power TM.

…And still somehow loses out to the idea of phallic swordplay with his stepdaddy. Chibi!Gwen got Pwned!

They spar a bit, with Dan Hiri smirking and easily diverting Gwendal’s most ferocious attacks of cuteness. Dan Hiri asks, with his sexiest smirk, if Gwendal wants to kill him.

Gwendal lunges but Dan Hiri easily sends his sword flying. Pwned again!

Next, Gwen decides to “pour his youthful indignation” into knitting! With Anissina! Yeah, how could THAT be stressful? OMG the blue penguin with a Mohawk on his bed!!!

Anissina whips him when he drops a stitch, and then remarks that bad knitting will not help him get the better of his father. Gwendal objects!

Anissina rebuts with a poke to the face. A winner is you, Anissina!

We see Celi and Dan Hiri in bed ooh lala! and Dan Hiri gets up to show off his manly chest!

Aw, he has now covered the manly chest in the fruity pimp cloak! But nonetheless… he site beside Celi on the bed and says “everything I need is here, but I don’t want to give up.”

He kisses her (Aww~!) and then says that he must sacrifice something. Then, he leaves.

Celi wakes up and goes all emo.

Chibi!Angry!Gwen is back! And this time with more fist slamming! And with a cuddly!scared!Conrart to boot. Man, I love this episode so much!

Gwen is upset, and threatening to kill stepdaddy. Not that his is anything out of the ordinary, but…

Celi looks wangsty and says it’s okay, that she understands. Gwen is not appeased. He bemoans that he will never have his chance...interpret as you will!

Cue a transitional shot of t a leaf passing over the camera and time passing…most original montage ever! In any case, the summer house is in disrepair and looking very “This is the house of the witch who eats babies.”

We hear whining and there’s Wolfram! But not just any Wolfram… So-cute-it-must-be-illegal!cavity-inducing!chibi!Wolfram! And he’s hoping that Little Big Brother (aslfjgl I DIE OF CUTE!) will be home soon.

Apparently Conrart’s off having adventures with his daddy after being summoned by carrier pigeon. And Slightly-older!But-still-hot!Gwen doesn’t approve.

Celi suggests that Gwen go with him next. Gwen still doesn’t approve.

But Conrat’s home! *fanfare* With…daddy! Dun dun DUN!

Celi and Dan Hiri sit together with Wolfram in tow, and Celi comments on how he hasn’t changed. Dan Hiri finds this idea amusing.

Celi asks him to stay, but he’s thinking of leaving. (Conrart in the VEST!! *squees* More wardrobe changes please artists, you do it SO WELL!!!) Oh, and he;s taking Gwendal along. *gaspshockdrama!*

Dan Hiri seeks out Gwen and tries to touch him (O.o) but Gwen bats him away and tells him to keep his filthy human hands off.

Dan Hiri invited Gwendal to the Nameless Village (where children of human and demon parents live with their mothers - remember that place?) Cue Surprised!Gwen. Dan Hiri says that they can “settle things.” And we get Vengeful!Gwen.

Okay, the eyecatch is awesome, so I’m capping it:

Dan Hiri offers to have a rest (but who CARES, because it’s Sexy!young!Gwen in blue with cloak! Oh, if they only made dress-up dolls…)

Gwen wants to hurry up but Dan Hiri wants to take their time. Dan Hiri is amused and goes fishing the easy way. *laughs like a madwoman at him holding a huge fish*

Later… Dan Hiri is lighting a fire the HARD way, and the HUGE FISH OF DOOM is resting on a stick waiting to be flambéed. *is mightily amused*

Dan Hiri asks Gwen to light the fire (I thought he was an Earth Magic User? I guess it’s not so simple) but Gwen gets indignant and goes all “Imma snap by book shut!” on Dan Hiri’s sexy self.

Finally, Dan Hiri gets the fire going with his good old fashioned elbow grease. He’s damn proud of himself.

But Gwen has become Adorable!sleeping!Gwen-who-lets-his-guard down! *melts*

Dan Hiri remarks that he’s still a child in some ways not that it stops anyone from wanting to molest him >.>

At the village, there are no signs of life.

…Or are there? Gwen deftly catches and arrow out of midair.

The townsfolk come out with their hoes and pitchforks and boards with nails in them and start calling Gwen a monster! Oh noes!

A voice tells the angry mob to wait! It’s Chibi!Josak, looking very chibily indignant and protective! He asks if the man is Dan Hiri. Affirmative, Adorable!Chibi!Josak!

The villagers are surprised. They bow before His Sexiness Mightiness. XD

Turns out, bandits have been targeting the area and resistance has been futile. But who cares, Gwen in the long blue coat! *drools and nosebleeds*

Hot!Bluecoat!Gwen doesn’t get it. Why not just ask for help? But Dan Hiri the Wise explains that Shin Makoku doesn’t accept the village either.

Shocked!Gwen!

Dan Hiri double dog dares challenges Gwen to help him fight the bandits off before their showdown.

Gwendal tries to resist, but there’s that thing about it being futile so he leads some scraggly villagers off.

Josak asks Dan Hiri about “the boy who was with him before” and if he’s well. Josak wanted to go se Conrart, but with the village the way it is… Dan Hiri says that Josak has something o protect and that’s the greatest joy there is. *melts into a squeeing pile of goo*

Out of the brush, the bandits emerge, complete with stereotypical bandanas!

The villagers attack. Gwendal gives a speech…something about in the name of the moon, he’ll punish them. And then he attacks! And asskickery commences.

The villagers worry about Dan Hiri, but Gwendal says that he doesn’t need their help because he’s that good.

Nonetheless, they flock to him. But Dan Hiri tells them to stay back and protect their village.

Dan Hiri inexplicably gets driven back by the nincompoop wearing an animal head.

But Gwen steps in in the nick of time and kicks his wolfy butt.

Gwen makes a statement about how unseemly it is, but then he turns and…! Dan Hiri is now Old!Dan Hiri!

A series of flashbacks show that Dan Hiri has been old since he came back a few days ago. Gwen is shocked again, and gets a look on his face that is darn close to sympathy. …Naw!

But then he rallies the villagers and they issue round the clock ass kickings to the Bandana’d Bandit Brigade.

The day is won, but Dan Hiri looks to be in bad shape. He asks to be alone with Gwendal.

Dan Hiri says that the passage of time is the same for both of them - in his short life as a human, he wanted to leave some proof that he was alive. Gwen asks why Dan Hiri chose him for the journey, and Dan Hiri says it’s because Gwen hated him. And the proof of his life is that he is hated by a man like Gwen.

Dan Hiri says he’s tired and wants to rest a bit, and he closes his eyes… *cries*

Gwendal kneels down beside him.

Young Wolfram and Conrart are standing with their mother, and Wolfram asks if Conrart’s dad was the “wrinkled old man.”

Celi says yes, and that it’s hard being left behind - perhaps that’s why the demons dislike humans so much. (profound!Celi moments are made of win!)

Wolfram puts 2 and 2 together…

Conrart confirms that his father is human. And looks freaking adorable doing it!

Time for a picnic! Yuuri and his cohorts are having one in a beautiful, peaceful village.

Conrart says that this place is “Special” and reaches for food, but Wolfram *blushes* and tells him to wipe his hands. The innuendo is literally making me insane!

Yuuri asks where Gwendal is. Gwendal’s standing at the base of an old tree, placing his hand on it almost affectionately, remembering how although he knew that humans age faster than demons, he still saw Dan Hiri in the prime of health.

Gwendal gives a gorgeous look up. *melts* He thinks that no one loomed so large within him as Dan Hiri, the one he could pursue but never surpass, the being called a ‘human.’

Say it with me: AWWWWWWWWW!

My incoherent ramblings and Gwendal-worship!

So much to say here! I love backstory, and especially this episode is really beautiful. ^_^

I think Dan Hiri’s character is fascinating and wonderful. I love his playful smirking attitude toward young Gwendal and yet his selflessness in wanting to accept Gwendal even if Gwendal rejects him. I also think it’s beautiful how he left Celi, knowing that she would be hurt but understand. I think he spared her the pain of them separating later on, in his own way.

It’s a very interesting dynamic about Gwendal and Conrart and their feelings about Dan Hiri. Obviously Conrart loved his father, but Gwendal hating him and yet respecting him must have put an interesting twist on their brotherhood. Conrart probably reminds Gwendal a lot of Dan Hiri, which would bring very mixed feelings I think. And then there’s the whole idea that Dan Hiri chose Gwendal, not Conrart, to be with him when he died (although I’m sure that’s why Dan Hiri sent for Conrart shortly before…).

I think it’s a great twist that of all the things in Dan Hiri’s life, all the good he’s gone and all the people who love him, the proof of his life is that “a man like Gwendal” hates him. A lot of me thinks that has to do with Dan Hiri’s life as a swordsman and being able to honor his opponent, and so he recognizes Gwendal’s begrudging respect and also respects Gwendal for never giving up and for striving to catch up to the person he pursues. But also, being the human husband of the Demon Queen, he probably was hated by many, but realized that Gwendal’s ‘hatred’ for him was on a different level, and was something he could understand and empathize with - Gwendal suddenly got a new father, after all, which is never easy. And also, I think that he chose Gwendal for the journey because he knew that he could give something invaluable to Gwendal by Gwendal witnessing his death.

Throughout the show, Celi and Dan Hiri’s relationship is really beautiful. She really loves him, but understands his need to leave and keep moving, and his need to choose to die as he did. It’s obvious that she respects him a great deal. I often wonder if her “free love” quest is somewhat of a mechanism to forget about Dan Hiri, a way to cover the sadness of losing the love of her life?

And through it all, we get the impression of the fragile nature of human’s short lives compared to Demon lives. Celi puts is beautifully by saying that it’s possible that the Demons hate the humans so because of that - because they have to watch the ones they love die and then live on.

Also, here we see the bond between Wolfram and Conrart, and how it got damaged. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it seems, when Wolfram found out about Dan Hiri being human, that he looked more scared than mad. It’s always been me belief that he started “hating” Conrart not really because of a betrayal, but to protect himself. He’d seen what happened to Dan Hiri when he got old and passed away, and perhaps unconsciously he feared that if he remained close to Conrart that Conrart would get old and die, or leave them like Dan Hiri did (I’m sure Gwen told him ALL about it…) and then Wolfram would be hurt. ‘It’s easier to cut him off by “choice” than to wait until Conrart leaves him and then be devastated’ type of thing. Excuse my totally Freudian analysis, but doesn’t it seem right? ^_^

I really love what this episode shows about Gwendal. Yes, he’s a grump and an aristocrat and a hardheaded stick in the mud in many ways. But he also feels deeply and forms bonds with people in his life that effect him profoundly. He might have hated Dan Hiri, but he also loved him in his way, and he respected him above all and wanted to become a better man to best him. Human or Demon, father or stepfather, it all ended up not to matter. And I think that’s a lesson that Gwendal passes on to his brothers, in his own way. The fact that Gwendal still struggles with anger toward the humans really rounds out his character to me - sure, Dan Hiri’s death taught him a lot, but he has a lot of barriers and prejudice to overcome, not to mention his pride and the idea of being vulnerable.

In short, I am a hopeless Gwen fangirl. Now it’s your turn! Have at it! ^_^
