Episode 57: The Apparition That Came from the Darkness

this post (community locked) for information!
This episode starts off with a continuation of the actions that took place in the last. There is fire, Wolfram has been kidnapped, and Yuuri is chasing after his kidnappers, screaming out to Wolfram.
Yuuri comments that they are fast, and calls out for them to wait up. He then quickly rethinks his words and realizes that no, they wouldn't wake up. So the chase is still on when all of a sudden a fiery hand of DOOM raises up out of nowhere, and we find that the dolls have indeed listened to Yuuri, only this isn't going to work in his favor.
They fire right towards our young Maou, who is standing there in a trance while the magic is coming right at him.
Things fade to white, while a hero comes to save the hero who went to save the other hero who saved the hero that went to save him and now needs saving by a hero who is currently trying to save our hero. *whew*
Unfortunately, Conrad comes across Yuuri's horse, with no Yuuri in sight.
Hmm... what has happened here? Yozak and Gunter catch up to Conrad, Gunter asks about Yuuri. Conrad tells everyone to search the area, Gunter tells people to call for reinforcements.
I liked the way he was pointing, made me think of Mouri Kogoro. It's like he's pointing at Yozak and going "The culprit is YOU!"
Then, we get a close-up of Conrad's face, who's thinking about Yuuri and Wolfram. Aw... *tear*
Flash to Belal, muttering about being the King of Chaos! Beside the poor Belal that... Thing is standing. (From here on out, it will be known as “ That... Thing”)
Three minutes in, we finally get the Title Screen.
Moving on, everyone is on the lookout at the moment for Yuuri and Wolfram. Gunter, Conrad and Yozak discuss the situation. Conrad asks if they haven't been found, Gunter says that they couldn't have just vanished, and Yozak remarks that there's still places where they haven't searched. Conrad replies that they're up against an unknown enemy, and decides to reinforce the troops and widen the search perimeter.
I love it when you guys play Army together!
We cut to GrownandSexy Gwendal discussing the situation with Baldy Hristo Cruyff (that looks like it's spelled wrong!), while soldiers in the back are investigating one of those dolls. Gwendal remarks that someone who wishes to hinder their alliance must have used houjutsu, and Hristo Cruyff asks which country is behind this. Gwendal remarks that he doesn't know, that this is Shin Makoku -- Blood Pledge Castle -- and that he finds it difficult to believe that houjutsu was used.
Cheri (Celi, Cecile, pick your poison) remarks that it must have been majutsu, but says she doesn't understand how there could have been someone with such high-level majutsu.
Big brother Gwendal remarks that they targeted Wolfram as well, and then we get a sudden cut to the shrine and Ulrike. She remarks that she can't see anything, as if everything is shrouded in mist.
She starts praying to Shinou to protect the two of them, in reference to Yuuri and Wolfram. We then get a shot of Murata, who just stands there looking pensive.
Once again, we flash to another scene, where Beatrice and Greta are running around and Conrad, Yozak and Gunter are walking around. The two (cute!) little girls look down from the balcony at the trio, and Greta remarks that she guesses that they haven't found them, Beatrice simply looks at her new friend and says "Greta...". A familiar hand clamps down on Greta's shoulder, and we see that Cheri! Celi! Cecile! (I'm going with that from now on - it's like Tony! Toni! Toné!), has approached the girls. She tells them it will be alright.
Suddenly, the portrait of Shinou shows up. Conrad is staring at this portrait, and we then are shown a portrait of Daikenja. (Both portraits, as well as a shot of Conrad's lovely eyes, are below under “Gratuitous”). Conrad asks the portrait of Shinou if this is his punishment for being unable to fulfill their agreement, and then grasps his arm. He looks down at it, and starts shaking.
Batman Murata shows up, silently, out of nowhere and remarks that "He's a selfish child" and that "He doesn't think about the people around him". Hmm... who is he? He says that they've found some clues on the whereabouts of Yuuri and Wolfram. Thank goodness! Conrad looks shocked, and we have yet another scene change.
And we have Yuuri! He's knocked out or his energy has been sapped up or something , and he's just starting to wake up.
We cut to Wolfram, who's not doing well at all. We conclude that they must be on a boat. Yuuri creeps over to Wolfram once he slides down against the wall, and rubs his sick friend's back.
1.He says that Wolfram was okay, then. Wolfram asks Yuuri if he looks okay. Yuuri laughs, and suddenly realizes that they're on a ship. He wonders if they're taking them somewhere (*sigh* Yuuri, think these things out before saying them!), and asks where they could be going. Wolfram doesn't know, and is curious about the dolls using majutsu, Yuuri says he's relieved that Wolfram is alive.
Wolfram says this isn't good, and asks why he came after him alone. Yuuri (who's looking around the place they're held captive) nonchalantly says it was a spur of the moment thing, and Wolfram asks what good is it if the Maou is also captured. Wolfram remarks that it would have been better if it were just himself. Yuuri says it no it wouldn't, and that it's not good that Wolfram was taken away by who knows what kind of people. Wolfram says that if it were just him, he would have managed somehow, and that Yuuri will just get in the way. A bell sounds, both boys look around, and the boat is approaching land. Wolfram says that they've reached land, and that he guesses they'll be docking there. Yuuri remarks that it's Big Shimaron. We get a cool shot of those dolls.
Scene change, and the men are discussing where they think Yuuri and Wolfram are. Yozak says that they apparently were taken away on a boat that had been hidden, and while he is saying this, those thingies hanging from the strings on his shirt in front of his surprisingly full chest *distracted* me, and I did a double take (didn't help that the shirt was skin-colored). I'll leave it to your imagination as to what I thought I was seeing in my moment of insanity.
Someone offscreen (I think Gwendal) says that Big Shimeron was pretending to lay low, and Hristo Cruyff replies that they did this just when humans and mazoku were about to bridge their ancient hatred. He says he feels he should apologize on the behalf of humans. Cheri! Celi! Cecile! remarks that there's no need for that, that they knew it would be difficult, and that it's something they must overcome. Yozak says that Belal is traveling to a castle in the border region, and that he plans to take custody of Yuuri and Wolfram there. Gunter replies that they cannot let that happen, and that they must prepare to set sail immediately. Gwendal says that Gunter needs to stay behind because they have guests (poor Gunter, always being left behind). Gunter is NOT happy about that, and says that he cannot calmly perform his duties in a situation like this.
Greta and Beatrice peek their heads in, and Greta responds that she's sure they'll both come back because they were happy about their sweets (in reference to the cute cake they made for Greta's daddies). Beatice says they'll make sweets again.
Gunter visibly softens at that.
Cheri! Celi! Cecile! reminds everyone that she was once Queen.
The scene changes as the group sets sail.
After they start to sail off, Cheri! Celi! Cecile! says that they can't let diplomatic relations be affected by this event, especially sinice his majesty isn't there (and Flurin was there!). She also says they should be even more determined to cooperate with each other.
Yet another scene change, and this time it's Wolfram and Yuuri being taken away in a heavily guarded carriage. Yuuri says he thought that Belal had given up on achieving world domination. He then asks Wolfram, who's breathing funny, if he's okay. Wolfram, who's still sick and is sweating, says that he (Belal) may be planning to take revenge on Yuuri, and that he's vindictive. Yuuri is not happy at all about that. Wolfram tells him to relax, that he'll be sure to protect him, and proceeds to go back to his heavy breathing and sweating. Yuuri swallows hard, and looks sideways at Wolfram like "how are you going to protect me in that state?".
Yuuri says it's strange that they went after Wolfram first, and wonders why and if it's really revenge. He asks if Wolfram said anything bad to Belal like calling him a wimp or a cheater (um, Yuuri, why would Wolfram say that to Belal of all people?). Wolfram says he didn't, and a spear comes near where his head had been a second prior.
Both he and Yuuri are shocked, and more spears come through the carriage. Yuuri is startled, and Wolfram is getting sick all over again. The carriage tilts over and falls on its side, and the door is opened. They get out, and start to run. They are instantly facing one of those dolls, but from behind someone slashes at it and it falls. Who is it? Adelbert!
Wolfram simply looks pissed. He reaches for his sword, but it isn't there. Adelbert tells them to relax, that he's not here to fight with them. Then he says that they are his spoils! Yuuri gets snatched up first, then Wolfram. Adelbert happily commands them to withdraw. They leave and those dolls start to form again.
Cut to the guys hanging out in the mountains, and Wolfram asks if Adelbert plans to oppose Shin Makoku by capturing them. Adelbert wishes he were more grateful (Adelbert... it's WOLFRAM. What did you expect?), and remarks that they did rescue them even though it was a coincidence. Wolfram asks how can a traitor like him say that, and Adelbert has one of his homies comrades bring Wolfram and Yuuri their swords. Wolfram still asks what he's planning, and Yuuri interjects that it's okay, that Adelbert is an ally now. Wolfram goes "An ally? THIS guy?" and well, Yuuri is typical Yuuri and responds the way we expect him to.
Wolfram questions that he'd trust a man that betrayed Shin Makoku, Yuuri brings up that he did rescue them. HWSCA (He who stole Conrad's arm) comes, Wolfram sees him and is livid. Adelbert says that he's been his subordinate for many years,. Poirot Wolfram calls Yuuri a wimp, and tells Adelbert that he'll be investigating this thoroughly, and to not think he'll be deceived by something like this. Adelbert simply laughs and rides off on his horse.
Quick scene cut to the ship our heroes of heroes are on, and they're just standing there and sailing off.
Scene cut back to Adelbert and company. Adelbert is filling in the boys on what's happened in his life since they parted ways. He says he's been wandering those parts, and that he's targeted that area cause the loot is good (mainly Big Shimaron's war funds and supplies). Wolfram remarks that he's fallen since his days as a Shin Makoku general. Adelbert says indeed and laughs a little. He asks what they know about those dolls, Yuuri says nothing and asks him what he knows. Adelbert doesn't have a clue either. He says that a strange rumor has reached his ears, however. He says that Belal has been associating with a strange masked man, and that Belal's personality and looks have changed since said associate appeared -- and that he's even more obsessed about ruling the world. Wolfram asks who the guy is, Adelbert replies that they don't know nor has anyone seen his face. Wolfram also asks if the associate has anything to do with the dolls, and Adelbert says he has no idea. He then smiles and tells them to look, this is his home. A fortress that takes advantage of the natural landscape -- one that's hard to get at and was once a bandit hideout, and that outcasts had been arriving ever since he got there. He says that now it's like a village.
Yuuri looks around and says it's like deja vu, Wolfram says they're thieves that all look shifty. Yuuri spots some familiar faces.
Scene shifts, and Adelbert, Yuuri and Wolfram are seated at a table. They are served, and the familiar woman assures them she didn't poison the drinks and food. Yuuri thanks her, but is hardly reassured that she's being truthful.
Adelbert discusses more things about the people in his hideout. He says that he's still not forgiven Shinou. Wolfram remarks that he's still going on about that, and Adelbert simply says there's no one more suspicious than one who advocates absolute justice and power. He compares Belal and Shinou. Wolfram is not amused at all by that comment.
He's about to pull his sword, but Yuuri covers his hand with his and stops him. Adelbert remarks that he's abandoned Shinou, but not Shin Makoku. Yuuri says it's because it's the country that Julia protected, and our new and improved Adelbert glares at him, HARD.
Wolfram gives Yuuri a sideways look, and tells him that seems to be a taboo subject.
Adelbert gets up and says that Julia's fate that Shinou imposed on her was too cruel. He says he accepts it because she accepted it, but that sometimes he feels bitter about it. He says he plans to stay there for the time being and observe what the truth is.
Yet another scene change, and we're back with Murata, Yozak and Conrad.
Yozak is saying that he heard that the boys were taken towards the mountains. Murata muses about dolls and bandits, and says that disasters never cease for the two. They all get ready to head off, and Murata remarks that they don't care that it will be night soon. He follows.
Night falls, and suddenly we get a shot of that... Thing.
Back at the hideout, the boys are sleeping (Wolfram in the bed, Yuuri in a chair), and Morgif starts rattling and moaning. A bandit guard is looking around and comes across something very scary.
That... Thing conjures up some more friends, and they all start attacking the compound. Adelbert, Yuuri and Wolfram awaken. They all run and take a look, and Yuuri asks what it is. Wolfram wonders if it's a monster, and Adelbert says it looks like majutsu. Wolfram says that's impossible, and that Yuuri is the only one who could possibly use majutsu that far into human territory. Adelbert remarks they've come to retake their prey.
Adelbert and Wolfram start to attack them, and they are tearing up his comrades. Yuuri simply looks on in shock for awhile, but after seeing a particularly large attack he turns into The Hulk Maou-mode!
He asks who the person doing this is and what they hope to accomplish, and calls up his posse.
And the attack is on!
Adelbert and Wolfram are like "Oh sh--" and Wolfram says that Yuuri's power has no effect. Morgif's stone is glowing, and the Maou looks somewhat confused. Adelbert tries to helps out, but that thing is too strong.
Maou!Yuuri touches Morgif, and says that he'd better be prepared. We get a fabulous light show, and that... Thing gives up. The Maou asks "Why can't he rest in peace?" and faints. Adelbert wonders what just happened, and Wolfram runs and asks if Yuuri is alright.
When then shift to our other heroes, and Conrad says something about the light just now.
Murata says that someone's excessive pranks won't be something they can laugh about soon, and the episode ends on that note with that Thing walking away and disappearing.

1 2 After reading my long summary, I sincerely doubt you want to read about my thoughts so I'll keep it short and let you all speculate: This episode is one of the ones you can whip out and point to when discussing Adelbert's growth as a character. He is much more lighthearted than before, he even laughs a few times (with no malice behind his laughter at that!). He's come a LONG way since episode #1.
(Let me also add that I commend those of you who have been doing these posts regularly. I fully appreciate it now that I've attempted to do one!)
