Episode 65: One Who Braves the Snow

Go to this post if you need the episode!!

SUMMARY

The episode opens with a flashback of the happenings in the last few episodes. The final box was found in Switzerland of all places, and Soushu's powers are leaking out and causing havoc, yada yada.

The title screen appears and the episode begins.

Ulrike is... er... praying?? in Shinou's temple... or attempting to hear his voice, one or the other.

Outside, the maids are finishing up some of their work, and gush over one of the female captains of the guard. Ulrike comes out and tells them to please leave. They do so, talking about how Ulrike seems kind of tense lately. Sangria is a bit out of it.

Back at the castle, Yuuri hears from Gunter than Sangria has been acting peculiar ever since she returned from Shinou's temple. He goes to see her and comes across Gisela as she's leaving the room. Yuuri and the others enter and Yuuri gets hit in the face with a pillow...

...while Doria, Lazania, and Dorcas are busy chasing after Sangria, who is distressed.

Wolfram thinks she seems perfectly fine, but when she notices Yuuri there she becomes upset and wonders if he's going to send her home, and even when he reassures her that that's not the case, she freaks out and sobs about how she can't trust anyone anymore.

Murata is pensive.

He heads off, and the others eventually join him in the library where he shows them a book. There's a picture of a snow covered mountain, Mount Makadira, which was the sight of Shinou's final battle with Soushu. Gunter says that since the battle, it's been isolated by snow and ice no matter what the season. Murata says that the place is filled with evil, and that if one were to be affected by the miasma they won't be able to trust anyone.

Yuuri thinks that this inability to trust is like how Sangria is acting now. In order to heal her, they must retrieve the Minadia Leaf which neutralizes the miasma. The catch is that it only grows on Mount Makadira, putting those retrieving it in danger of being affected by the miasma themselves.

Conrad is the first to offer to go.

Gwendal doesn't seem to like this idea, but Conrad says he'll bring Yozak with him. He and Yozak have been through many dangers together.

Yuuri being Yuuri decides that he should go too, and while the others seem wary about it, Murata thinks Yuuri would be okay to go along. At this, Wolfram jumps in and says he's going as well. Murata doesn't seem to think he'll fair too well, at which point Wolfram yells at him, saying “There's absolutely no way that I'll stop trusting Yuuri!”

Murata tells them all that if they should start distrusting someone even just the tiniest bit, to come down from the mountain immediately.

And so Conrad, Yozak, Yuuri and Wolfram leave and head towards Mount Makadira. As they're riding along, something unseen happens to spook the horses (most likely the miasma). Conrad manages to jump off of his, but Yuuri and Wolfram are tossed off of Wolfram's horse and into the snow, tumbling down a hill.

They get up and wonder where they've ended up.

Yozak comes up, having lost his horse as well. Luckily he managed to grab one of their bags. When Wolfram asks Conrad where the map is, Conrad has an “Oh shit!” look on his face.

It appears he didn't think to grab it.

Wolfram starts to yell at him but Yuuri says it's alright, that Conrad was just worried about them. Conrad, however, is emo, and when Yozak asks what they're going to do now, Conrad says he'll go get the Minadia Leaf on his own. Yozak says it's too dangerous, Wolfram tells him to do whatever he wants, and Yuuri chimes in to say he'll come, too. It'll be easier to keep warm if they're moving, after all!

Conrad, Yozak, and Yuuri turn to begin walking, and Wolfram rushes to go along with them, perhaps not wanting to be left alone.

Some time later they're walking across some ice, when Yuuri suddenly slips.

Wolfram asks him what he's playing around for, and Yuuri is embarrassed.

Yozak says that at times like these he can appreciate Yuuri's cheerfulness.

Yuuri's tummy makes a noise and he complains about being hungry.

They decide to eat. Yuuri takes the bag Yozak had gotten off his horse in order to get some food, but finds this instead.

Apparently Yozak carries around a dress with him because he's been saved by dressing as a woman many times before. It's become a good luck charm.

Of course, now they're stuck out in the cold with no food.

And so it's back to walking. Wolfram and Yuuri are trailing behind Yozak and Conrad, and Wolfram ends up stopping Yuuri to ask him if he thinks it's strange.

When Yuuri asks him what it is, Wolfram wonders if maybe someone's been affected by the miasma. Conrad might be hiding the map because he doesn't trust them, and Yozak might be hording all the food for himself. He says it's dangerous to continue on with them, and that they should take a different route. Yuuri thinks he's being paranoid.

Pushing Yuuri out of the way, Wolfram moves foreword to be able to confront the other two.

Conrad doesn't think it's a good idea for them to take a different route, and when Yuuri tries to butt in to agree, Wolfram shouts at him and tells him it's his duty to protect his fiance. Yozak agrees with Wolfram, saying that he and Yuuri should stay behind. He moves over to Conrad to suggest that Wolfram might be affected by the miasma.

“Thankfully, he seems to trust His Majesty if no one else.”

Eventually the two older men turn to being walking off again, leaving Yuuri and Wolfram on their own. They go off to find some place safe to stay and end up in a little cave.

Yuuri wonders if Conrad and Yozak will be okay, and Wolfram tells him not to worry and to rest for now.

Wolfram then goes on to ask Yuuri if he's heard of a certain legend - if you're out in the cold, you're supposed to share body heat through skin-to-skin contact. Yuuri jumps up (probably freaked out by the suggestion) and says that that's not a legend at all, and that Wolfram's been acting weird.

Wolfram immediately becomes paranoid and thinks that Yuuri might be affected by the miasma.

He begins thinking to himself. “Alone with Yuuri, who has been affected by the miasma... who knows how he might betray me? My virginity life may even be in danger. No. Even so, I don't care. If I can die by Yuuri's hand... That's right!”

Here he jumps up to exclaim “I will give up my life for the sake of love!”

Yuuri is once again freaked out.

Wolfram tells him that he doesn't care if he trusts him or not. “That's doesn't change the fact that you're important to me!”

Awww~! How sweet~!

Yuuri, of course, reacts as he normally does.

Still up on the mountain, Conrad and Yozak are fighting through the snow. The ground beneath caves in, and Yozak falls. Luckily he manages to hold onto the cliff, and Conrad offers him his hand.

Yozak looks at it him for a few moments, considering it, before grabbing it and allowing Conrad to help him up.

Eventually they come across the Minadia plant.

Conrad leans down to take some, only to find Yozak's sword pointing at his back. Yozak says that he'll take the Minadia instead. “If you happen to be affected by the miasma...”

“Are you saying that you can't trust me?” Conrad asks him.

“All you have to do is trust me,” Yozak replies.

“Trusting an opponent while his sword is pointed at me...” And Conrad whips out his sword to knock Yozak back. “If I were that generous, I would be dead by now.”

Commence fighting.

Yuuri and Wolfram have left their little cave. Apparently Yuuri can't sit still and wants to go after Conrad and Yozak. They come across the two of them attacking one another. Yuuri yells and tells them to stop, but Conrad knocks Yozak to the ground.

As he's pointing his sword at them and they share a few moments of eye contact, the mountain breaks beneath them and they both fall. The large, broken chunk of mountain hits the ground and causes an avalanche. Up towards the top, Yozak managed to catch his sword in the side of the mountain and is holding on for dear life. He also grabbed hold of one of Conrad's hands.

Conrad tells him to let go or he'll end up falling, too. Yozak asks him who would obey a man affected by the miasma.

I'm having flashbacks of the “You fall and I'll fall with you” scene between Yuuri and Wolfram. It's nice to see Conrad and Yozak have a sweet scene like that, too.

Consequently, they both end up falling, plummeting into the snow and being swept away by the avalanche.

The snow heads towards Yuuri and Wolfram as well. As they're hit with the massive wave of cold white stuff, Yuuri transforms, blasting the snow away.

Conrad and Yozak fly out...

... and the Maou is holding Wolfram.

“No man can live on his own,” he says. “Even children know this; you fools have forgotten this principle.”

Wolfram is most likely internally fanboying at this point.

The Maou continues with his speech. “With this, justice has been served. No, this won't be the end of it. A good society nurtures the spirit of cooperation. Treasure your friends.”

Yuuri returns to normal and collapses to the ground with Wolfram still in his arms.

Conrad and Yozak comes over to see if he's alright, and Yuuri proceeds to yell at them for being stupid.

They suddenly hear a voice. It's Murata, coming to them with a bunch of Boneys. They're all wearing funny masks that look like Morgif.

Murata explains that Anissina created them to be worn against the miasma. Yuuri yells at him for not mentioning something about it before.

And so everyone returns to the castle to learn that everyone was affected by the miasma except Yuuri. Go figure.

Greta feeds Wolfram the concoction made from the Minadia plant, although it must taste bad because he makes a face when he eats it.

Gwendal gives Conrad and Yozak a mini lecture, but Yuuri stops him with a little speech of his own. “When Conrad went to Big Shimaron, to be honest, just for a little bit, I didn't know what to think. But, I... I didn't end up hating Conrad.”

Apparently that's the reason Murata thought it would be alright for Yuuri to go on their most recent adventure.

Gwendal exits the room, thinking of Yuuri's self-delusion and the strong will of the Maou.

Murata and Yuuri share a glance.

The next day, Sangria has returned to normal, and the maids are once again happy, commenting on how they're the cutest women in the world.

You keep telling yourselves that, ladies.

Conrad and Yozak are watching them. Yozak is disgusted with himself. He hadn't even realized he'd been affected by the miasma.

“Despite that,” Conrad says, “You saved me. Even though you supposedly didn't trust me.”

They share a look as well.

Yozak chuckles, then tells Conrad not to be so conceited. When Conrad questions him, Yozak begins to walk off, mocking him by saying - very sarcastically - “I'm so loved!”

Conrad laughs lightly as well, then follows after him.

Back at Shinou's temple, Ulrike is once again in front of the boxes with her hands clasped. Murata comes in to greet her and she tells him that she heard about the incident. She begins to question him, and the two of them stand there staring at the boxes as the episode comes to a close.

MY THOUGHTS
I like this episode for the sole fact that we see more of the deep friendship between Conrad and Yozak and because of the whole Maou holding Wolfram in his arms thing, but that's besides the point. Even when being affected by something that causes them to distrust one another to the point of drawing their swords on each other, they still saved one another from grave danger.

That, and Yozak mocked Conrad at the end. Someone else might mock you behind your back, but a true friend will mock you to your face. XD

Then, of course, we see more of Wolfram's obsessiveness with Yuuri (as well as Yuuri's complete faith in everyone - that is seriously going to bite him in the ass one day, I just know it...). Even though he calls him a cheater and seems to think he's going to be unfaithful with every woman that crosses his path, he still puts a lot of trust in him, and is willing to die by his hand should that ever be the case.

That felt sort of hasty, but I've got an anime convention to go to. :D I probably won't be around to respond to everyone's comments today or tomorrow, but I'll make sure to do so when I get home on Sunday.

Episode 66 to be hosted by... uhhh... has anyone claimed 66 yet?? ^^;
