Episode 78: Until We Meet Again

Go here (community locked) for the last episode! D:

It’s over already?!?!

Alright, guys! Last episode!! :D It’s been a delight doing all of this, and it’s kinda sad that it’s over now. TT___TT But, enjoy!!

SUMMARY
We’re shown a brief flashback scene, with Shinou standing by a window, talking about how Soushu will one day consume him. “I will become a monster that wishes for nothing but destruction.”

The Great Sage is standing with him.

Shinou says that he doesn’t intend to allow Soushu to gain control over him easily. The Great Sage tells him that he will join him, and when Shinou apologizes he simply smiles.

Shinou turns to look out the window. “In the distant future, a new hope will appear…” he says. “A Demon King who will surpass me.”

Back at the present, smoke billows from Shinou’s temple. Murata speaks to Yuuri.

“Please, Shibuya. Grant him release.”

Cue title screen.

We see Morgif coming down from the sky and heading towards Yuuri, where the sword - all glowy and shiny and badass looking - destroys The Mirror at the Bottom of the Sea, shattering it to pieces.

Conrad calls for Yuuri.

Yuuri grabs onto the sword and lifts it.

Everyone looks on with shocked expressions on their faces.

“That’s right,” Yuuri says. “I can’t give up.” It appears he has returned to himself.

In the air, Julia’s necklace is shining brightly, preventing the dark powers that had been released from the box from spreading.

Yuuri opens his eyes and smiles. “I’m sorry, everyone. I made you all worry.”

Wolfram is very happy to see that he has returned to normal.

Everyone looks up to observe Julia’s necklace and the dark power it is constraining. Gwendal notes that the necklace’s power prevented Shinou/Soushu from taking action, and forced the darkness out of Yuuri’s body.

Adalbert thinks of his dead fiancé, but corrects himself and comments that he pendant has become the color of Yuuri’s soul.

So apparently Yuuri has a blue soul that glooooooooooows…

Yuuri asks Murata what Soushu is.

“Even though we fought him, we still did not know his true form… not until that time,” Murata replies. “Soushu is anger, sadness, envy… people’s negative emotions that have congealed. That’s why he can easily enter people’s hearts. Because he is formless to begin with, he cannot be easily defeated. It was then that Shinou and I thought… If we could seal Soushu into a single vessel, then perhaps we would be able to destroy him.”

Shori is angry that they would use Yuuri as a vessel for such a purpose.

Murata shakes his head. “No. The vessel is Shinou’s soul.”

Cue shock from all the others, and various reactions of disbelief.

“Shibuya is the strongest Demon King,” Murata explains, “chosen to destroy Soushu along with Shinou’s soul.”

More reactions concerning this newest revelation ensue as the others try to make sense of it all. Adalbert really doesn’t like Shinou.

At Blood Pledge, Lady Celi is being badass and fighting off the bad guys. The men should really take her along with them sometimes, because she can seriously kick ass.

As the darkness spreads cross the world, all of Yuuri’s friends in different parts of it are fighting as well, including wimpy King Antoine and Laila, Lady Flynn - or at least Lady Flynn’s men - and Stoffel and Raven.

Within his heart, Yuuri turns to look upon Shinou, whose eyes are glowing red and who’s surrounded by a glowing blue power.

“You’ve shouldered this burden for thousands of years already,” Yuuri speaks to him, “and yet you still plan to bear it alone right until the very end.”

“Let it all return to nothing,” a Soushu possessed Shinou says.

“I understand how much you love Shin Makoku,” Yuuri continues, “for you to go so far.”

“Let it all be destroyed.”

“I also love this world and everyone in it,” Yuuri goes on with his speech, and the screen moves to show a baseball… because apparently baseball is important when it comes to saving the world from complete destruction. “But…” Oh, there’s always a ‘but.’ “There’s no way I’ll sacrifice you.”

Flashback of Yuuri being taught how to catch by a professional catcher.

“I… will defeat Soushu.”

The pitcher throws.

Shinou looks crazy.

Yuuri charges with Morgif at hand.

Shinou is prepared for death.

“I will defeat Soushu!!”

And then we see the Shibuya house, quiet and peaceful, with a window open and the curtains fluttering in the breeze. Inside there’s no one there, but a lone baseball rests on the table.

Back in Shin Makoku, Yuuri is kneeling with Morgif stuck in the ground, and there’s a lot of sparkles floating in the air as the darkness caused by Soushu disappears. Julia’s necklace is now wrapped around the hilt of the sword.

Around the world, all the side characters that had previously been fighting react to the fading darkness.

Yay~! Yuuri has saveded the world!!! :D

At Blood Pledge, Lady Celi is still being badass, but seeing as there’s no one left to fight she puts her sword down and calls for Anissina, who comes to one of the upper story windows with one of her inventions on.

More sparkles and more gaping looks from everyone.

Okay, guys… close your mouths.

On Earth there are sparkles as well. Sharon asks if it’s over, and Bob says that it appears to be so. Miko marvels over the beauty of the lake. It’s glowing gold.

Back at Shinou’s temple once again, our heroes are looking up at the sky as a small white sphere descends, taking the shape of Shinou.

“Yuuri,” he says, now free of darkness. “I’m glad that I chose you. Thank you.” He then turns to speak to Murata as well. “I also made you suffer for a very long time.”

Murata’s glasses are glowing. When are you going to stop that, Murata?? “I promised, didn’t I? It’s my role to make your wish come true. But that’s all over now.” Finally the shine disappears from his glasses as he looks up to smile. “The Great Sage’s memories can disappear with me.”

“Even if I am reborn, I have a feeling that I’ll be able to see you again,” Shinou remarks.

“I think I’ve had enough of babysitting you,” Murata tells him. “But…” And his glasses resume shining. “It’d be nice if we did meet again.”

……….

Can you please stop it with the shiny glasses???

Shinou smiles, and then fades away with lots of sparkles.

Everyone looks on as they have been all the while, and we’re shown each of their faces. Here’s Conrad’s.

I don’t mean to be bias or anything, but this has always been my favorite shot of Wolfram. I don’t really know why… but I do think he looks very pretty here.

They all notice Ulrike standing behind them and turn to look at her. She looks very sad to see Shinou leave.

Murata starts to speak to Yuuri, and when Yuuri comments that Shinou’s gone, Murata tells him it’s time for them to say ‘goodbye’ as well.

Wait… what?????

“Now that His Majesty Shinou is gone,” Ulrike explains, “that will be the last portal.”

A swirling portal appears behind Yuuri and Murata.

“This is the last of Shinou’s powers,” Murata tells him.

Shori observes that they traveled to and from Earth using Shinou’s powers, and now that he’s no longer there, they won’t be able to cross over anymore.

…………. what????

“So that means…” Yuuri begins, then trails off.

Murata turns to look at him. “If means if we miss this chance, we won’t be able to go back to Earth anymore.”

………………………………....

Yuuri is, needless to say, speechless and has no idea what decision he’s supposed to make.

So someone else makes it for him.

“Go,” Wolfram says, and all eyes turn to him. “Your family is waiting for you over there, aren’t they? Do you want to make your parents sad?”

“Wolfram…” Yuuri’s still pretty much speechless, especially now.

“My fiancé would not be so heartless,” Wolfram continues.

“Go already!”

Shori approaches his bewildered little brother and speaks to him as well. “I’ll leave it up to you.”

Finally, Yuuri finds his words. “I really love Shin Makoku. At the beginning, I was worried about whether I could be the Demon King or not. But now, I’m glad that I could do it.”

“Leave Shin Makoku to us,” Gwendal tells him, smiling that very rare smile of his.

The others begin to say their final words as well.

Gunter: “Your Majesty. I am proud to have been able to serve you.”

Adalbert: “I have seen as you ruled as Demon King for myself.”

Hube: “Farewell, Your Majesty.”

Yozak: “I really did like you.” Jee… thanks so much for your approval, Yozak.

Ulrike: “Farewell, Your Majesty Yuuri, and you too, Great Sage.” The only one to acknowledge the fact that their Great Sage would be leaving as well. Murata graciously thanks her for looking out for them.

Apparently Shori’s not good enough for a goodbye.

And then, the sweetest goodbye - at least for the moment - if, of course, given by Conrad. “No matter how far away you are, I will always be watching over you. Now and forever.”

Yuuri nods lightly and gives a little smile, then lowers his head and stabs Morgif into the ground. He turns to begin heading for the portal with Murata and Shori, but a voice calling out to him stop him in his tracks.

It’s Wolfram, who has tears running down his face.

Yuuri doesn’t turn back. “Goodbye,” he says, then jumps into the portal and disappears.

On Earth, in Switzerland, the sun is setting. Those gathered look out over the lake to see Yuuri, Murata and Shori arise from it’s depths. Miko smiles happily, then runs to her sons and Murata.

Some time later, Bob is mentoring Shori. Bob says that by succeeding him, he won’t be able to reach his original goal of becoming governor. Shori says that it doesn’t matter, as long as he can protect his little brother.

Rodriguez comes in with tea for everyone, and Shori ropes him into helping him with paperwork.

In Japan, Yuuri’s riding his bike home from school like he always does. He stops it in the same place he’d stopped it at in episode one, climbs off, and calls out to Murata. They got to sit on a bench in the park by the fountain and have a drink, and Yuuri asks his friend what would have happened if he’d given up. Murata quite nonchalantly tells him that the world would have been destroyed.

At Blood Pledge Castle, the maids are as busy as always, carrying laundry down the hall. Dacascos comes in, complaining about all the work he has to do, and the maids yell at him for tracking in dirt. There’s a loud explosion off in the distance, and a distressed shout from Gwendal. Anissina’s voice rings out, shouting at him to wait.

There’s smoke billowing out of one of the windows.

Two bad omen birds fly by.

Inside, Yozak is standing before the portraits of Shinou and the Great Sage, having taped them back together. Of course, they’re still very much ruined, and he laments having to pay for them.

Conrad comes up and tells him not to worry, Wolfram is painting a masterpiece to replace them. Yozak seems as if he doesn’t know what to think about that.

Wolfram is indeed painting…

…and is very pleased by the end results. As he rushes off to escape from the fumes of the bearbee poo paint, we see his large portrait of Yuuri holding a lemon… which is the only realistic looking part of the entire painting.

As he leans out the window for some fresh air, Wolfram looks on as Greta reads to baby Eru, sitting with Hube and Nicola.

Once again inside, Celi is looking through clothes while Stoffel tries to convince her to reconsider becoming Demon Queen again. Celi says that she won’t. “I’m not longer fit for the role.”

Raven agrees.

Down in the treasure room, Morgif is sleeping… and back to normal.

Conrad is riding out to the baseball field he’d had built for Yuuri. Some of the village children are out there playing, and call out to him when they see him. He waves back and then pauses to think. “Here, your legacy lives on.”

We see more scenes of people going home and being reunited with their families now that the final battle is over.

Flynn.

Antoine and Laila.

Heathcrife and Beatrice.

Alford, continuing on his journey.

Ondine and Seraphine, kneeling to pray together with their people in the forest.

At Shinou’s temple, reconstruction commences. Gunter, Gwendal, Conrad, and Wolfram have come to see how it is progressing.

“Doesn’t it seem a bit pointless to restore Shinou’s temple now that Shinou is gone?” Wolfram wonders.

Ulrike comes up to respond to him. “His Majesty Shinou may not be here, but I believe he is watching over us from somewhere.”

Wolfram looks sheepish, and Gunter says, “That will be a source of comfort for the people. Now that even His Majesty Yuuri is gone, everyone is feeling lonely.”

Wolfram looks very sad at this…

…and Gwendal turns his head a bit to look at him, before saying, “We don’t have time to indulge ourselves in such sentiments. We will soon decide who the next Maou will be for the sake of our nation’s stability.”

“But, Brother, that’s…” Wolfram tries to speak, but ends up trailing off.

Conrad thinks of Yuuri.

On Earth again, Miko and Shoma are sitting outside in the back of their house, as the laundry dries on the clothes line.

“Even though the two of them don’t have tails or wings, they’ve grown up to be great mazoku,” Miko observes.

“Yeah,” Shoma agrees. “And they’ve also grown into great humans.” Seconds later, he shows Miko a baseball that he found on the kitchen table.

Elsewhere, Yuuri and Murata are walking towards the lake by the park, hidden by all the trees.

“We’ve gone to Shin Makoku from here before, too,” Yuuri says as he approaches, as the two are obviously reminiscing. He crouches down by the water’s edge. “I wonder how everyone’s doing.” He takes Julia’s necklace out of his pocket and holds it in his hand. It starts to glow, and Yuuri looks surprised. When he stands to question Murata about it, Murata pushes him and causes him to fall into the lake.

In Shin Makoku, there are curious, surprised reactions from everyone, as if they can sense something.

Gisela, taking care of the soldiers.

Dacascos, taking care of the horses.

Celi, on her search for free love.

Anissina, in her laboratory.

The maids and Greta, baking sweets.

Yuuri has appeared in the fountain at Shinou’s temple. He looks as shocked and surprised as everyone else, and asks Murata what’s going on.

“When you defeated Soushu,” Murata explains, “you gained powers that surpassed Shinou’s. With that much maryoku, you can cross between the worlds on your own.”

……………………………….....

“If you knew that,” Yuuri wonders, “then why didn’t you tell me?”

Murata looks bashful. I think he’s just being his usual devious self. “Well, when I pushed you into the pond, I was still thinking ‘maybe this might work,’ so I wasn’t really sure.”

Yozak, presumably by the tree that Dan Hiri was buried at, has his own delayed reaction to Yuuri’s arrival.

“Well, at any rate,” Gwendal begins, “this settles the problem of finding a successor.” For now… there remains the day with Yuuri, you know, dies with no heir to the throne.

“I can’t believe we are able to see each other again!” Gunter gushes.

A foot steps into the water of the fountain, and Yuuri looks up to see Wolfram in front of him. The expression on Wolfram’s face is priceless. He looks like he has no idea whether he should be happy or angry, or if he should remain neutral or cry again.

Slowly he kneels down in front of Yuuri, then attacks as Conrad and Gwendal both look on smiling.

“You wimp! Where were you and what were you doing all this time when you could’ve come back?!”

As Ulrike’s watching, she suddenly senses something as well, and turns to look up, smiling brightly.

As those in the fountain settle down, Conrad is the first to truly greet their king.

“Welcome back, Your Majesty, to your country.”

Yuuri smiles. “Everyone, I’m home!”

Now pardon me while I go cry for just a few seconds……

Okay… anyway…

MY THOUGHTS
This, in my opinion, was an absolutely perfect way to end a series like this. Not only were certain things explained to us (such as the entirety of Shinou and Murata’s grand plan), thereby answering all of our previous questions, but how it ended not only left it open for a possible continuation, but it left it open for interpretation as well. Fans can take it, and do what they want with it.

Saying that, I worry about how they’re going to tie up season three. I don’t think the end will be as perfect.

Except I’m still not quite sure what Soushu was supposed to be. I know Murata said he was, like, people’s negative feelings in physical form, but… how did it originate then?? What caused it?? And how can Yuuri so easily destroy those negative feelings with a sword??????

One of the things I really wanted to discuss (and I had more things in mind to talk about, but I’ve forgotten them now that I’ve had to watch this episode again), although I know it’s been talked about multiple times before, is the issue about Wolfram crying as Yuuri leaves. I don’t care what anyone says, or whether it was truly out of character for him to do that or not, but the fact that he did so made that scene much more powerful than it would have been otherwise. (SPOILERS for things not pertaining to the anime)So he said he would never cry in such a situation in one of the drama CDs or whatever. So what??? Just because he said he wouldn’t doesn’t mean he never will. I could tell you all I wanted that I would never cry, and that still isn’t going to stop me from doing so in a situation like that. Plus, knowing that he did in fact say something like that, and yet still cried… doesn’t that make it all the more heartbreaking, and all the more powerful???

:D But either way, he’s grown a lot throughout the series, probably more than any other character. He went from a selfish, spoiled little brat (and a very cute one at that), to a mature and more open-minded young man.

Yuuri grew a lot, too. In the beginning he didn’t even want to be the Demon King - he’d have rather gone home - but here you can clearly seen how much he’s grown to love his country, and how hard of a choice it was for him to leave it all behind for the home he’d originally wanted to go back to in the first place.

So… yeah… Uhhh… I had more, but I sorta just woke up and my brain isn’t functioning at one hundred percent yet. :D

An extra note to please warn for and white out spoilers for season three!!! Thank you!!
