Please forgive me if mine is less than exciting than everyone else's. I tried to work on it before hand (ie. after ep 2 was out), so I didn't have a template to go from at the time. (sorry for using the fansub version, my pc is set for region 2) anyway... comments under images
Conrad watches for sharks, Wolfram gets sick, Yuuri is a bit worn out, and Josak is the musical accompiniment. Actually they're just rowing their way to Vandavia Island while Josak sings a folk song about it.
Thar be the island!
Yuuri's tired from walking, doesn't see the dream the island holds... (maybe he should inhale some volcano smoke *shot*)
...and so is everyone else (though poor Wolf doesn't notice Yuuri's excited to have some time with him, as he's already assuming the position XD)
Since everyone's too pooped to party, Josak shows them to a rest area.
Josak, Yuuri and Conrad enjoy a nice cup of tea while Wolfram tries to keep himself alive.
Then there's a server girl that tells them they're in the wrong place - the matsuri, er, festival is on a different mountain - much to Yuuri's displeasure - beceause that's where he thought they were going. He really didn't want to go DOWN the mountain to go up another one. (Yeah, that would suck, methinks). But Conrad assures him they're in the right place and when Josak says they're going to the spring at the top of THIS moutain, the girl gets all worried and tells about the myth (15-16 years ago, fire and brimstone, water becomes lava, painful burns, scary face, yadda yadda)
So ditching Wolfram, Yuuri, Conrad, and Josak make their way to the spring chit chatting and having Josak being rather cynical about the whole thing. You know, IF he can use Morgif type of chatter. Conrad tries to shush him, but he keeps going on. It doesn't seem to bother him that Conrad called him rude.
Venturing in via boat, Conrad says the heat's getting to him and Josak learns the hard way how much the water burns. (I think Conrad should kiss it and make it better)
Yuuri didn't have a problem sticking his hand in the water, but let it touch his clothes... He too learns the pain of the burning. And nearly killing everyone as he rocks the boat with his panic attack.
Dr. Yuuri says the water is like acid because look how Josak's hand is swollen. Conrad interjects and says it's just Morgif's maryoku. Yuuri's impressed, but Conrad doesn't think it's something to be impressed on.
SCENE CUT TO GWEN'S CASTLE!
Gunter's mixing stuff in a pot... cooking perhaps?
But honestly, would you eat something that looked like this?
Whatever Gunter's doing (how is this fortune telling?), Gwendal doesn't care for it. It's smelly and making his castle stink. Then, he notices something but what is it? We don't have an answer because...
...because whatever it was that Gunter was making that smells so bad is done! and delicious! (and still stinks). He offers a bit to Gwendal, but he's not interested. He's more interested in what he saw on the floor... which happens to concern him a little.
OH look at the cute kitty!! just ignore the skull and other bones next to it... yes... those aren't there at all. But needless to say, Gwen wants to know WHY there's a kitty, Gunter wants to know why Gwen cares, and the kitty wants Gwen to play with it - as Gwen's eye twitches from it's cuteness as he claims that it doesn't bother him.
Back to the cave, something's shining in the water! So the trio get closer, Yuuri strips and makes a flesh colored smear into the water.
Liking the hottness of it, he wades his way towards his goal - with a comment about people with high blood pressure to be extra careful. Getting close enough, he reaches into the water to get Melugibu Morgif.
HOWEVER, something happens and Yuuri screams, making Conrad and Josak a bit worried. Apparently, it bit him. Yuuri doesn't like being bitten by strange swords. So he kinda stares at it, and makes out a bit of what it looks like, and freaks out again. He goes back to the boat ranting and raving about how he's gonna be cursed, never able to marry and essentially giving up. Conrad says it's ok, and Josak...
well, Josak once again gives him a hard time. Because he's the maou, he doesn't have to do anything dangerous. But Yuuri's finally sticking up for himself and going on about how he was a normal boy, and now he's got all this new stuff to learn and do. Josak woudln't know how that feels, but he doesn't really want to serve someone so weak either.
SCENE CUT!
Yuuri's tired from his epic failure
So Wolfram inquires about it.
But Yuuri thinks of the face on the sword and cringes (ok, this picture says to me that Wolf's reading a instruction manual of kinky and Yuuri just doesn't want it to hurt). Anyway, he tells Wolf a bit about it and when he says it bit him, Wolf talks about Gunter's notes and how it's supposed to be loyal to the maou. or maybe it's hungry XD
STORY TIEM! Gunter writes, well, read the caption XD Also, there are some things that hint that it likes young women. But again, Yuuri's against killing humans and Wolf reminds him that he doesn't have to. Then Wolf's all sweet and says he'd go with him and calls Yuuri a wimp. After Yuuri exclaims he's NOT a wimp, he admits he missed being called that (aw, he likes his cute pet name). Then they have a spat about being engaged - Yuuri saying it's ok to nullify it and Wolf's pride not letting him - and making sure Yuuri doesn't cheat on him.
And to end the argument, Wolfram locks himself in a closet. (you're supposed to come OUT of the closet Wolfram...)
SCENE CHANGE! As we pan down Gwen's castle, we see anissina (with no boots) having a spot of tea~ and complaining about the noisy duo that 'inhaled too much smoke' (...)
Ah, our noisy culprits. Seems that Gwen has taken quite a liking to the kitty and claims him as his own to take care of.
Gunter apparently has no objections (although, this subtitle speaks louder than anything)
Back on the island, Yuuri's still awake although Wolf's passed out. So he goes to find Conrad to have a little night time fun chit chat. Turns out he was already chatting with Josak. So Yuuri, being the inquisitive deviant, eavesdrops on their conversation. He learns about Josak's attitude and that he wanted to know what kind of person he was so that he could be prepared to die for him on a battlefield, should it be necessary. Josak accusses Conrad of being the same and brings up all his fallen friends and soldiers - to which Conrad gets mad, spills some VALUABLE LIQUOR and dodges the subject with a nice threat. More banter about their history together and then Josak accuses Conrad of falling for the maou because he's cute. (awwwww~) The scene ends with Josak talking about 'that thing' that Conrad gave to Yuuri - and how 'Adalbert's brain would explode if he found out' (that's a disgusting image. BAD JOSAK! BAD!)
Hearing what he shouldn't have been listening to, Yuuri goes off alone to reclaim the maken!
Victorious, Melugibu, er, Morgif moans in satisfaction ♥ or disappointment. I'm not sure XD
Yuuri leaves the cave with his prize! Surprisingly, Conrad's waiting for him on the shore. (who's stalking who?)
Everyone together, Wolfram reads through more of Gunter's notes. Same page as before - Morgif needs to eat human lives (om nom nom). So where's the best place to go without having to kill people? A Hospital of course!
First patient, the family member seems rather startled that something has been put in her face. The boys don't seem to really think it's strange.
however, the patient is full of energy and now recovering due to Wolfram's beauty. Not only this patient, but others in the room as well. (this next part is for you Wolfram fans)
(and back to the story)
Outside where all the patients are all rather genki, er, feeling quite energetic, they mull over how to feed Morgif human lives. Josak suggests burning down a village (again? is that all the mazoku are good at?), but Conrad still thinks they need one or two lives. Yuuri's not too keen on either idea.
Conrad goes off to find an alternate method when opportuntiy blows in. What kind of flyer is this? Looks like Yuuri's just been volunteered for some sort of mystery job that wants young pretty people between 10 and 19 with a weapon to put their life on the line. Clever~ But at least it pays well? Wolfram doesn't like the human writing. Not enough elagance for Wolfram.
So Yuuri takes the interview. And apparently, he's the best candidate!
Yuuri gets fitted for some roman style armor and meets a woman - who suggests he leaves now. She goes on to explain the tournament is a gladiator type thing. You know, entertain the masses with one on one DEATH.
Then some unsavory (and seriously unattractive) people come in to intimidate Yuuri. With more encoragement from the lady for him to quit, he learns that if the criminal survives, he'll be pardoned. What Yuuri doesn't learn is that they'll still die. So he goes into the battle thinking that a draw will save everyone.
Lucky enough to go first, Morgif gets a bit too excited and starts moaning to express his joy. He's one hungry Maken.
And who is the opponent we are going to watch Yuuri try and not kill? Why, it's our old friend Rick! What a coincidence!
Hmm... my thoughts... I'm going to get my crazy fangirling over the Gunter cooking kittens out of the way. We've already been shown that he is going to be used as comic relief in this series (so unfortunate for him, as he's got so much more potential). But this scene is one of my absoulte favorites in all forms. While it's not as direct in the anime, it's pretty implied that Gunter's already used some animals in that pot of purple goop, and was likely going after the kitten next. Being in Gwendal's castle and doing all this makes him one brave mazoku. I'm surprised Gwendal hasn't killed him. Though I have to wonder if they were just inhaling it or if they consumed some too (maybe that's what was in Anissina's tea cup XD). And Gwen smiling is downright scary.
Anyway, onto the actual meat of the episode. Vandavia Island. I like how we get to see everyone have such dynamic emotions. Josak isn't very carefree, but he shows us a rare serious side. I can't really blame him for wanting to know what kind of person Yuuri is. I'd want to know what type of person I'm putting my life on the line for. Josak is just gutsy enough to not sugar coat things. I think that is a lot of my issues with Conrad at this point. He seems to want everything to go smoothly for Yuuri and everyone to not necessarily worship him, but at least treat him as someone much higher on the food chain. Granted, he IS, but he himself doesn't really want so much special treatment. Yuuri's absolutely right when he says those things in the boat to Josak. And Josak's not wrong in saying that he won't know what it's like. He's not pretending. He's keeping things in the realm of reality. For a fantasy story, Conrad seems to want to actually live the fantasy. But he does at least show more emotion than his standard pseudosmile he's gotten used to wearing so far. Angry!Conrad! Wolfram shows quite a range. We have our standard short tempered jealous wagamamapoo, but he also is helpful and actually holding a decent conversation. Something that we haven't seen a lot of about him. It's actually a delight when he's being civil. I couldn't help but laugh hysterically the 13 times i watched him go into the closet when rewatching this episode a dozen times to write this. And the fact Yuuri wants him to come out of the closet. Nice Yuuri.
Regarding art... The characters still aren't up to par, in my opinion. For being beautiful people, they all looked a bit off - except making wolfram super bishie in the hospital. Also, Anissina's missing shoes, as noted in the screencap summary. I have to check my dvd, but when they colored Gwendal's coat brown in episode 2, it was fixed back to green on the dvd, so she likely has her boots back.
I'm not going to do any spoiler thinking ahead on this one. there's plenty to actually talk about IN the episode. I could talk more about the comment Josak said about the thing Conrad gave to Yuuri, but it's been touched on a few times already and I'm sure will come up in comments. Anyway, thanks for being patient with me and my not so great hosting job. Hopefully by episode 53 I'll have gotten better. arigatou gozaimashita~ *bows*
