Title: One Sleepless Night
Author: vivarina
Prompt: Lullaby
Pairings: Mainly Wolf/Yuu, slight Mura/Wolf
Rating: G
Warning: No real lullaby, ‘lullaby’ is more of a metaphor. Set after Conrad's betrayal arc, assuming everything is back to normal.
Entirely from Yuuri's point of view. His thoughts are in italics.
Summary: An insight into Yuuri's thoughts on a sleepless night.
I lay on my back and gazed up at the ceiling.
Why am I awake?
It’s been such a tiring day. I don’t know why Günther decided to educate me on every type of wine available in Shin Makoku today, or why Gwendal unloaded so much paperwork on me. Of course, I never really read what I’m signing anyway, but hey, it takes energy just to sign all those papers! I was so exhausted that Conrad decided to end our baseball practice earlier than usual after seeing me yawn so many times.
So why am I still awake?
My eyes wandered over to the other side of the bed. Empty.
Where is Wolfram? I know he said he wanted to talk about something important with Murata, but does it have to take so long? And what do they have to talk about anyway?
Argh, forget it, I should probably try counting sheep…..
I started to visualize fluffy white sheep leaping over a fence. However, it didn’t seem to be working at all. By the time I got to sheep number one hundred and thirty seven, I was still as wide awake as before.
What now, Shibuya Yuuri? Start counting the stars in the sky instead?
I jumped as the door opened and a sliver of light from the doorway blinded me temporarily. Closing my eyes for a short while then reopening them, I saw that it was Wolf, already in his usual nightgown. He looked just as sleepy as I felt as he padded over to the bed then flopped down onto it, pulling the covers over himself. He then rolled over onto his side so that he was facing me. I could sense the intensity of his gaze even in the semi-darkness.
“You’re still awake, Yuuri? I thought you said you were tired?”
“I am tired…. I don’t know why, but I haven’t been able to sleep though I’ve yawned so many times I lost count of them. Do you think it could be insomnia, Wolf?”
“Im…imsomia? What’s that?”
“Aah, never mind, Wolf, it’s not important, I’m probably thinking too much as usual…. So, Wolf, what did you discuss with Murata? Anything interesting?”
“…..no, nothing interesting, we just talked about the history of Shin Makoku and how what happened in the past might influence what happens in the present. You probably wouldn’t want to know too much about that, though, since you’re always yawning duringGünther’s history lessons. Speaking of which, Yuuri, the Great Sage does know a lot about Shin Makoku…. I found out so much from him tonight that I never knew before. His mind is amazing….”
Eh? You’re praising Murata?
I stole a peek towards the stubborn bishounen lying beside me. His eyes were already closed; he was probably going to drop off to sleep at any moment.
Do you really think so highly of Murata, Wolf? His mind is definitely amazing, but….but…..do you really think so highly of him? Come to think of it, Wolf’s never ever spoken badly about Murata. And why hasn’t Wolf ever praised me like that?
“Relax, Yuuri, I’m not about to worship the Great Sage or anything….. I’m just stating the obvious. Go to sleep…. By the way, I might stink a little. I was too tired to take a bath tonight.”
Stink? I’m not sure if that’s the right word to use, Wolf. I don’t think you smell that bad at all. In fact, I think you usually smell pretty good…… Aah, what am I thinking? Is my mind wandering because I haven’t had any sleep?!
“Why is your face red, Yuuri? Is the room too warm for you?”
Wolf had reopened his eyes and was looking at me curiously. I could feel heat rushing to my face.
Red? Is my face red? Why would it be red?!
“Aah, it’s nothing! It’s nothing!! It’s probably like what you said; the night is a bit warmer than usual...”
Wolf looked at me as if he didn’t quite believe me. I could see the slight doubt reflected in his emerald green eyes. However, maybe because he was too tired, he didn’t pursue the matter further. Instead, he shut his eyes again and was snoring lightly within a matter of seconds.
Rolling over onto my side, I looked at him. As usual, Wolf had his mouth slightly open and was drooling slightly.
The way he sleeps definitely ruins his perfect image, but he still manages to look very cute when he does this…..Argh, Shibuya Yuuri, go to sleep! Stop thinking nonsense! And anyway, I really am feeling rather sleepy now….
I jumped slightly as Wolfram flung his arms around me in his sleep. His face was now right next to mine and I could feel his warm breath against my neck. I felt my face heat up again.
Sigh… I always feel like his bolster when he does this. But it’s alright…..he feels so warm….. And contrary to what he thinks, he does smell rather nice….And it’s strange, but now I feel very sleepy…. It must be the sheep counting having a delayed effect…….
I’ll have to talk to Murata tomorrow about the history of Shin Makoku……as the ruler of Shin Makoku I’ll have to know more about the kingdom I rule over……..but now…. it’s time…..to…..sleep………
*end*
The prompt I used is ‘lullaby’. There’s no real lullaby here, the ‘lullaby’ I used in this context is actually the effect of Wolfram’s presence on Yuuri. I’m not sure if this fits the requirements for the fanfic contest ^^;;
This is based mainly on the fact that most of the WolfYuu hints in the novels exist within Yuuri’s own mind, as he seldom voices them out loud, on some of Yuuri’s thoughts about Wolfram, and on Wolfram’s sleeping habits in the novels.
All constructive criticism is appreciated ^_^
