Gwendal's thoughts are in italics.

Gwendal looked up from the mountain of documents on his desk and rubbed his temples with a sigh. He had a headache from going through all the papers and his eyes smarted from trying to decipher the spidery handwriting on some of them.

I really need to have a good talk with Heika about all these unsigned documents. I know signing papers all day long is very boring for a young boy like him, but some of them are very important! He can’t just run off and leave all of them to me. And anyway, I need time to work on that plushie Greta wants. By the way, I wonder if she prefers a kitten or a bearbee plushie this time? Maybe I’ll try out that new stitch pattern I just learnt…

Lost in his plans for knitting future plushies, Gwendal was startled when a loud knock was heard on his door. Before he could respond to it, the door had burst open and the red-haired devil, as she was known to the victims of her experiments, charged into the room.

“Gwendal! I’m so glad to find you here!” Anissina exclaimed joyfully as she fingered a strange-looking device in her hands. It was small, round and shiny, with a strange jagged crack on its surface.

Gwendal felt an impending sense of doom as he eyed the device. It looked innocent enough, but then most of Anissina’s inventions had looked harmless until she activated their potentially lethal functions. He shuddered especially at the memory of the corset she had invented for women to deter perverts. Anissina had attached rows of sharp teeth to said corset so that it would bite anyone that touched it. He had been the one forced to test it out and even now he still had a few faint bruises from his encounter with it.

“This is the ‘Thief-biting Sphere’! Due to the rising occurrences of thefts in Shin Makoku lately, I invented this sphere to help deter thieves. We can conceal it amongst our belongings, and when a thief riffles through them, this sphere will bite him or her! Remember the corset I invented before? It inspired the invention of this sphere, and it even has the same kind of teeth like those on the corset! However, since it’s never been tested before, I’ll need someone to volunteer their face, hands and feet to get bitten. I want to adjust the sphere so that it bites wherever hurts the most.”

Gwendal gulped. He knew what was coming next, and this coming experiment sounded even worse than those in the past. “Can I survive this?” he wondered as he imagined the teeth clamping down on his face.

“You should consider yourself lucky, Gwendal! I’m going to test this wonderful new device right now, and you have the honor of being the one chosen for its trial run!” Anissina’s face was glowing with excitement as she eyed her new invention with obvious pride. “It’s going to involve a certain amount of pain, but then, no pain no gain, right?”

“Gain for you, maybe, but just pain for me,” Gwendal thought gloomily. “She’s my friend, and I know I should help her out, especially since her inventions are quite remarkable and very useful, but really, her experiments are pure torture! I should learn to say no. She can find some other victim just as easily, and anyway, I’ve been her guinea pig so long that it’s only fair that I ask for time off just this once. Right! This time I must say no. Just say no, Gwendal! You can do it!”

“Gwendal? You don’t look too happy about this. Do you feel alright?” Anissina’s voice penetrated Gwendal’s painful memories of a particular experiment involving a corset that bit and clung on one’s hand, refusing to let go until Anissina poured ice-cold water on it.

Gwendal took a deep breath.

“A…Anissina, actually, I don’t think I want to be your guinea pig today.” Gwendal began awkwardly then added silently in his mind, “I’d never wanted to be that in the first place….”

“Oh? But Gwendal, you’re the perfect guinea pig! Come on, this is for a wonderful and noble cause!” His friend’s eyes were sparkling with excitement at the mere mention of her latest invention. “Just think about it, if my invention works, the crime rate in the city will go down! Don’t you want that to happen?”

“But Anissina, I’m really busy today. Can’t you find anyone else to test your invention on?” Gwendal said, tapping the enormous pile of papers on his desk and hoping that Anissina would take pity on him. “I support your cause, of course, but I really have to go through all these papers today. I do have deadlines to meet, you know.”

“Oh, very well then, I’ll spare you today.” Anissina said a bit huffily. “But who’s going to be my guinea pig now?” She continued in a musing tone. “Hmm…maybe I should get someone younger this time. Some of the thieves are children after all.”

Before Gwendal could protest at her considering recruiting an innocent child, someone else knocked on the door and Anissina called out, “Come in.”

Wolfram sauntered in, and Gwendal stole a peek at Anissina’s face. Judging from her expression, Gwendal knew at once she had found her latest victim.

“Gwendal, have you seen Greta? She’s supposed to meet me now, but I haven’t seen her anywhere.” Wolfram looked around the room and spotted Anissina. “Lady Anissina, have you seen Greta?”

“Wolfram! I haven’t seen her, but I’m so glad to see you! Would you like to help me out for a noble cause?” Anissina’s eyes were sparkling with joy at having found a new victim so quickly.

“Eh? What?” Wolfram looked rather confused at the sudden turn of events. “Gwendal, aren’t you supposed to be the one helping Anissina?”

“Well, yes, your brother is usually the one to help me out, but I decided to cut him some slack today. However, I still need someone to test my invention on right now and I think you’re the perfect person for it! You’re young and vibrant and….”

“….able to withstand a lot of pain,” Gwendal added silently in his mind. Anissina could indeed sound very persuasive when she wanted to.

“…..and just the one to help me out! With the help of my new invention, the number of thefts will be greatly reduced! Just think about it, if you just spare an hour of your time, we’ll soon be able to eliminate more than half of the thefts in the city!” Anissina had advanced so that she was now standing directly in front of Wolfram. It was evident that she was not going to be deterred a second time.

“I… I don’t think… I mean, I’ve to find Greta right now,” Wolfram looked rather unnerved as he looked at the device Anissina had in her hand. It seemed as if he too had some inkling of what might really happen to him if he agreed to participate in the experiment.

“Don’t worry, this won’t take too long, I promise! You’ll still be able to find Greta after this, and anyway, this invention will probably solve the problem of the rising crime rate in Shin Makoku! It’s been troubling both your brothers for a long time now, so you’ll be helping both me and your brothers at the same time. Come on, Wolfram, help me out! Please?” Anissina looked pleadingly at Wolfram as she took a step closer to him. Wolfram looked at a loss for words at this. Indeed, there was hardly anything one could say to refute her statement.

Gwendal felt a pang of remorse as he imagined the horrors his brother would have to go through. Wolfram looked rather desperate as he backed away slowly from Anissina. He was obviously trying to think of some other excuse to avoid having to help, but there was clearly none that could be good enough to satisfy Anissina. Wolfram wasn’t busy right now, after all, and Anissina wasn’t one that accepted excuses other than work.

“Come on, Wolfram! Don’t worry, you won’t get any scars from this!” Anissina paused, then added musingly, “Probably not, anyway.”

Gwendal winced at the thought of teeth clamping down on his brother’s face. Somehow, it felt worse than when he imagined the sphere biting himself. He knew his brother was nearly adult by now and could probably take the pain if forced to, but…but this felt like watching a harmless and cute little kitten entering a dragon’s lair!

Maybe I should help Anissina after all, it’s not that big a deal, I’m used to all the pain. But I’ll probably never get the chance to avoid another experiment in the future, Anissina won’t accept the work excuse next time. Plus I also need time to finish that plushie for Greta! I deserve the freedom I’ve wanted all along! But…

Anissina had advanced so much that she now had Wolfram backed into a corner of the room. Anissina could be incredibly determined when it came to her precious inventions, and she was clearly very passionate about her current one. There would be no chance of escape for Wolfram, unless someone or something intervened.

Darn it, this is the break I’ve hoped for all along, but why is it so hard for me to allow this?! Why can’t I just let it be?

Gwendal gritted his teeth and made up his mind.

Dratted addiction to cuteness! Dratted big brother complex! They’ll ultimately lead to my demise.

He sighed as he muttered, “I’ll help you with your experiment, Anissina.”

The other two occupants of the room looked rather confused at his statement.

“I thought you said you were too busy, Gwendal?” Anissina asked bemusedly.

“Ofcourse I’m busy. I still am! But I just can’t leave my youngest brother to your mercy!”Gwendal thought grumpily as he got up from his chair. “Come on, let’s go, Anissina.”

“Whatever you say, Gwendal,” Anissina was smiling knowingly as she exited the room before Gwendal. “You just can’t resist cuteness, can you?”

“Gwen… Gwendal, are you going to be alright? You look a bit sick.” Wolfram looked rather concerned as he took in his brother’s expression, which was a mixture of woe and resignation.

“Of course I’ll be alright, Wolfram. Don’t worry.” Gwendal managed a faint grimace as he followed Anissina to her lab of doom.

The things I do for the people I love……
