A Simple Day
Notes: My challenge sentence 'The start of a simple day'
"The start of a simple day, he says. Just need something from behind this. We’ll be done and still have plenty of time to make it to the party, he says. It’s your thirtieth birthday, Danny; do you really think I’d make you late for that, he says-“
“Stuff a sock in it, I say…”
Daniel raised his head slightly and looked towards Jack. “I’m not wearing socks, Jack.” He made a small gesture with the hand pinned under O’Neill causing the man to make a sound similar to a distressed cat. “Problem, Jack?”
“No,” the other man wheezed sarcastically. “Everything’s fine. I’ve got a large oak entertainment center lying across my ass. I’m cool.”
Daniel’s head thumped back onto the carpet. “Well, the other half is on my stomach and chest, so I’m just as fine as you are, perhaps more so. Thank goodness I was able to reach Teal’c before he left the base. He should be here soon. If I could just get some leverage, I could move…” He sighed. “Can you tell me what you had to have so badly that we had to do this now?” Daniel turned to glare again. “And *why* you let go of the thing all of a sudden?”
Jack mumbled something into the carpet.
“You want to repeat that where I can understand it?”
Jack pulled his mouth clear of the carpet. The salesman really was right about how plush it was…
“Jaaack?”
O’Neill sighed. “I didn’t want you to see it.”
Daniel frowned and rolled his head towards his friend. “See what?” Jack blushed.
“Your present.”
Daniel raised one brow. “All you had to say was don’t look.”
Jack snorted. “Yeah, like that’d work.” The two men shared an amused grin. “Okay, don’t look.”
Daniel rolled his eyes, but closed them. There was a minute or two of rustling then-
“Happy Birthday, Danny.”
Daniel opened his eyes. In his friend’s hand was a slight crumpled envelope. “Uh, Jack, I only have one hand available and it’s waa-ay over there.” Daniel nodded his head towards his far side.
Jack grinned and reached out to tilt Daniel’s chin up a bit so that he could see Jack’s hands. Humming the intro to the old Johnny Carson Tonight show, Jack pulled open the envelope. Inside of was a card with a picture of Charlie Brown and Linus. Charlie said, ‘Birthdays remind me of what a great person once said…’ Jack opened the card and the sound effect of an adult’s voice ‘wah-wah wah-wah-wah’ed for some time. He tilted the card so that Daniel could read the rest.
Don't worry.
It didn't make much sense
to me, either.
Daniel snickered. “That’s strangely appropriate given how many of my mission overviews you’ve napped through.”
Jack grinned. “I told you. I get more out of them if I close my eyes to concentrate.”
Daniel looked below the card, at the two tickets that had slipped out. “Is that my gift?”
“Yeah.” He lifted one of the embossed cards and Daniel peered at it.
“Um, wow. Two tickets to the exhibition-- Tutankhamun: The Golden King and the Great Pharaohs. Two tickets, Jack?”
Jack shrugged as well as he could while lying on his stomach. “Didn’t think you’d want to go alone. Hammond’s given us a whole week off.” He gave a small cough. “Besides, who would you ‘wah-wah wah-wah-wah’ at?”
Daniel bit his lower lip. “A whole week.”
Jack grinned. “Yeah, plenty of time to see the exhibit and maybe take in some sights-“
Daniel smirked. “Sights that *just happen* to be in Minnesota.” Jack nodded happily. Daniel stared at the ceiling. "I'll pack the bug repellant..."
"I'll pack the fishing poles!"
