Has anyone out there [worked with / produced any] eBooks? I've been tasked with researching the various types and helping to pick the best for us to use.
(Yes, I know I cross-posted this from Twitter. I did it manually, though, so that makes it OK. :))

We're less concerned about portability at this stage, and more concerned with our ability to transfer the quality and usability of a printed book to an electronic format. We've been squeezed into having to do an e-book, so we're trying to give up as little as we can. We're also trying to make it marginally more difficult to steal our stuff. Luckily, nobody's crazy enough to think we'll be unhackable, we just want to raise the bar a little bit. I'm about 99% certain that we'll go with some implementation of PDF or another, but... due diligence, y'know?
As for effort being the determinant for OKness -- there is no causation between effort and OKness, but there is a casual relationship between the two factors. To wit: anything I take the time to copy/paste over and re-edit is likely to be worthwhile enough to be OK to crosspost. :)

However, they're a great way to get a mandatory fixed design, which is (as a graphic designer being forced to create an ebook despite it being a lousy idea) a major priority.
Additionally, we don't have the time or money to create a reflowable, multi-platform product. So there's that. :\

I like the .lit format for reading on my pda. I have some built-in reader program that loads it up fine. It's very generic though. I also have a freeware program where you can load an htm file or a txt file and create lit files. That was handy.
