John Hodgman:I have confidence that, in no short order, Prop 8 will be repealed, and the gay marriage debate will look as absurd at the miscegenation debates of the 20th century do now. I have confidence this will happen not because it is merely right, or because the electorate will suddenly love gayness, but because opposition to gay marriage has ( Read more... )

This situation is very interesting to me. Because you have one of the most liberal states in the entire union, yet they voted in support of Proposition 8. This is the sort of fund you get when you mix in a large Hispanic voting population (who are largely catholic) yet who are also largely Democrats in vote counts.

I find the situation rather facinating due to it's irony. My personal feeling is to make everything a civil union. EVERYONE LOSES. Basically, in the eyes of the law, you change the wording from "marridge" to "civil union" and then let anyone do it who wants to. :D

If you want to get "married" then do so in a Church. The State shouldn't even care.

In any event, if the voting population votes for something, is it not ALSO our duty to consider their wishes? Just to play Devil's Advocate (see opinion above).

Notably, I believe Obama doesn't support gay marridge. Or does, kinda. Or something. ^^

You and I agree on something!

Obama supports civil unions, but not gay "marriage." The word "marriage" is too politically charged... I (and BHO) think we should just establish civil unions with all the same legal benefits that married couples receive and let it be done.

I did not get married in a church. We purposely removed all references of god from our marriage ceremony. I would have been equally happy with "civil union."

Not to be cavil, but many gay folk *wouldn't* be happy with being deemed a 'civil union' while other state-licensed unions get to be called 'married'... which is why the 'everyone loses' idea is the way to go, IMO. Everyone gets the basic 'civil union' title, and if you want to deem YOUR union as 'married', you can do that too if you'd like... but the state doesn't care either way about that title.

Less the hispanics, and more the african-americans.

FWIW, you and I are (surprisingly) in agreement on this. Regardless of why you want to be called married (Jeebus Said So, your union has been sanctified by Bippy the Wonder Trout, or just because you want to say you are), the state shouldn't care.

He doesn't support gay marriage. It's an area where he and I differ. (In fact, his opinions re: gay marriage are almost exactly the same as GWB's.)
