Hey everyone! I wanted to let everyone know about a trip that I’m planning. I’ve talked to some of you about the house in northern Michigan (specifically in the town of Elk Rapids) that my family has.
Basically, it’s my grandparent’s (on my dad’s side) old house. They have passed away, and as such, the house remains in my family. Usage time of the place is split up between my dad, his sisters, and his brother. Since my parents own their own cottage which is around 15 minutes away from my grandparent’s place, my dad pretty much never uses his time at the grandparent’s old place.
My dad told me that I could have friends up to the place this summer for a long weekend, and I was like… “hell yeah!”
The place is literally across the street (small street… 2 lanes… little traffic) from the beach. The beach itself is awesome! It’s right on the East Bay of the Grand Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. The beach is pretty cool because the water doesn’t really get that deep for awhile out. Also, there’s this cool sand peninsula that lets you walk out a few hundred feet. The beach is actually part of a park… so there is also a nice playground (with swings) and tennis courts. There’s a nice walking / running path that runs throughout the park as well.
here’s like… a billion things to do up there. Besides the beach, there are a slew of bike / walking paths, fishing, boating (if we can find a boat… haha), canoeing, tubing (as in down a river), etc! Besides the outdoors stuff, the house is around 20 minutes from Traverse City. There is everything you can think of there. From malls, to arcades, to nightclubs, to whatever. Traverse is kind of a hotspot for stuff to do in Northern Michigan. I’d really love input from everyone on what we should do… we have a billion choices. Becca lives in the same area (around 45 minutes from the house) so we’d all be able to hang out with her too!
Here’s what I’m thinking:
We’d leave from Brighton around 3pm on Friday, July 14th. The trip takes around 3.5 - 4 hours. I figured on staying until sometime the evening of Monday the 17th (probably leave at like 6 or 7).
I’ve been told that I have no limits on the number of people I can have up there, although if we have many more than 10 people we’d probably need to put some people outside in tents. There are beds for 8. Also, the place has a washer / dryer as well as a HUGE grill.
As far as costs, there will be gas to get up there, supplies (like food), and there is a $15 per day charge for use of the place. FYI that $15 per day ($45 total for the trip) covers the cost of utilities while we’re there.
The most important think I can ask of anyone who wants to go is to please respect the place. I will be directly responsible for anything broken or any messes created. We have to leave the place looking exactly like it was when we arrived. Also, all the bed sheets will have to be washed before we go, and the place will need to be cleaned up.
That’s it! Hope a lot of people can go. I think we’d all have a blast!
