I spent over a month there about eight years ago. My previous boyfriend (now referred to as "dickhead") was born there and I went up with him during the summer for a vacation.
It's a lovely city. It'd be great if it weren't for the french canadians. They're more then a bit standoffish to anyone who doesn't speak french. Or expects things to be bilingual. I took french in high school and after a few weeks had a passing understanding of most of what was being discussed around me but it's still not easy. Everything is given in French first and assumed to be French unless you ask otherwise. (In the rest of Canada - or at least the handful of places I hit outside Quebec province - everything is clearly in English with smaller print French included. There is no english printed anywhere on anything in Montreal. You have to ask for English printed things seperate.) Even movies are shown in French with one or two English showings every few days.
You have to hit Mount Royal which is a lovely park,

Thank you, Miss M.:^D!!!
Last night, I went to Bonjour Quebec online and ordered all the touristy publications.
My command of the French language is passable at best... I can read and listen to it a hell of a lot better than I can speak it... I won't let the Peppers get to me;^D.
Yeah, I've been considering going up through New England to Montreal on the bus or train with my bike this summer.
Again, thank you very much! This helps immeasurably!
Take the train - I highly recommend it... And, many times, if you book a regular car ticket and check for sleeper cars closer to the date you're leaving, you can often get a sleeper car for way, way cheaper than normal :)
I traveled around the country by train - it was fantastic and I really really REALLY want to do the trans Canada train when next I have some time and money.
Yeah... I went to the Amtrak station here in Charlotte earlier this month for the timetables and general info... I definitely want to get a sleeper compartment.
About a dozen years ago on PBS was this great documentary called "The Last Train Across Canada" hosted by this big old British dude. It was a lot of fun to soak in those sights and sounds!
