SInce this seems to be as good a place as any to ask advice from friends (and dare I say "Professionals"), would anyone out there have any input on the procurement of a Wacom tablet ( Read more... )

Having a WACOM tablet is absolutely essential if you ware working in Photoshop. You don't think so now, but you will after you use one. Being able to set the level of opacity or brush size to the pressure of the pen makes all the difference in the world. Better pen / brush combos will even represent the angle at which you hold the pen.

6x8 or 6x11 are the two best sizes. If $$ is a concern, go with the 6x8, though I would stick with a tablet roughly the same aspect ration as your monitor. Any in the Intuos series is good to have, though the mouse it comes with is pretty useless. Not that it's bad, it's just... who needs it?

Anyway yes, it's a good investment. You will love it, and wonder what you ever did without it.

BTW, on another topic, MPD Psycho is great. Thanks for the recommendation.

Yeah, I know, I should have been working with them back when I was doing more concept art. Most of the stuff now is pretty cut and dry, but I still work a lot of atmospheric affects on the images (see Growlanser and P3). I just don't like more crap on my desk, my desks are much like my home, cluttered and scary (but mostly because of the unkempt troll that inhabits it).

As for MPD, that first book is sweet. The second was not quite as good, but now I am stuck with it.

Thanks, since its not my cash, I will probably do the larger of the two, but if I could have the Cintiq, well, I guess I am just lucky to have the mac.

I actually had a Cintiq when I worked at Z-Axis.

HATED IT.

Remember when you had to unlearn all that you have learned when you started drawing on computer, 'cause it was weird that your hand is down here and your eyes are up here?

Well, it's the reverse on the Cintiq. I found it so strange to be putting marks in the actual place where I am, fact, marking. Also, I found it very frustrating because my hand was always in the god-damned way of what I was working on.

I second what mDNA says: 6x8 is perfectly suited to my needs. Any larger, and I find it unwieldy, and a waste of good desk space. Then again, I draw with my wrists...that is to say: Improperly.

Now, if YOU are springing for this, then I can help you out. You see, if you are associated with an institution devoted to higher learning, you get a sizable discount on the tablet of your choice. I would be willing to order it for you at said reduced price if you send me a check for the whole thing in advance.

OR, you can buy one at GDC for the same reduced price, if you don't mind waiting until February.
