What should I show people in New Orleans?
My couch surfers come so excited, like
"I am on a mission to see some of the best places in the US, and I am certain that this includes New Orleans!"
interestingly enough, why?
I am not trying to say the city is not good, I live here very comfortable. But I don't really understand what tourists can explore ( Read more... )

I love showing people the food. Benighets at Cafe Du Monde, shrimp po'boys, crepes - everything's good. Magizine St is fun to walk down with all the little shops. And I think everyone who comes here needs to take a streetcar ride, at least once.

There are some good museums downtown about the history of the area - the LA state museum and the Cabildo are nice, and The Presbytere has a big exibit on Mardi Gras.

Take them on a haunted history tour! You can ride the streetcar to the quarter, show them the architecture, history, and legend of the city, with no sitting in pubs required. Show them the levees if they're interested in post-Katrina New Orleans, and you could even get them to volunteer for a day if that seems interesting. A lot of the old history of the city is kind of covered up now--like Congo Square, which had Louis Armstrong Park put on top of it and isn't somewhere the average tourist would be interested in going, but was where the African slaves once "rocked the city" with Sunday dance parties.
