how often do you use group competition to stimulate?

the only reason why i ask is because i remember reading an article about how often times with students/classes that have a hardtime with classroom management, its because a series of social competition. who has the better clothes, the better girl, the better everything.

i imagine that often times this may translate in the classroom as well. you know... when you play games and one team tries to outdo the other.

i really have no idea what i am talking about...
