Why does anyone even have car alarms anymore???

No one even pays attention to them. They're pretty much a nuisance.

Anyway, I've read a couple of books lately. Poor-quality reviews ( under the cut. )

God damn rape scenes. They ruin otherwise perfectly good books. If I want to read about rape I'll read the newspaper.

It's especially jarring when it happens in the Valdemar books due to how sugary sweet the rest of the story is. I'm glad that Lackey at least seems to have gotten it out of her system after only 2 trilogies. I don't think she's written any scenes like that since the Last Herald Mage.

There was this really interesting sci fi book series about being a doctor in space, which was real good up until oh look it's time for teh rapes! I being dumb read the second in the series and IT HAPPENS AGAIN FROM THE SAME PERSON. WHO SHE NOW MAGICALLY LOVES AND BEARS CHILDREN FROM. WTF!

No thank you, I'll just go read some David Eddings again. Sure he recycles characters but at least there's strong women who don't get RAPED in it.

1) REH = Robert E. Howard, if you are unfamiliar. He created Conan, Kull, Solomon Kane and a host of others. He is one of my favorite authors. He was definitely a "product of his time", and it is unfortunate his time's chief export was inherent racism.

2) I have no idea how you have never heard the word "trope" before, but be warned: tvtropes.org is a GIANT timesink.

People have car alarms to annoy everyone, and so that the asshole neighbors who sit there gunning their un-mufflered motorcycle motors can set them off.

That probably just about sums it up, really.

Maaaaaaan I still can't get into books like that. "Don't you LOVE this character??!! Let's assrape them over and over again! whee!"

Now I want to find and re-read Dragon Bones. That one is pretty good, and she only fucks with the characters a teeny bit. Teh Rapezors in that book is man on boy, but it's implied if I remember right. Man. Rape.

Except you love both the first two Valdemar trilogies. :P

Not true: I <3 The Talia series, can't really stand Vanyel. He's kind of stupid and stuff.

Though my favourite character in all of her books is probably Vanyel's Mother (and her letters of Endless Drama) and Vanyel's Tribulations With Women Who Want To Sex Him Up.

Well, the Talia series still has the 3rd Book Whammy.

Agreed. I don't want to have people think I'm OK with rape when I recommend a book to them wherein all of a sudden OH HAI RAPE happens.

I dunno, I think it's not necessarily a thing to never mention in novels, but I do appreciate when it's just implied and not described in detail. I appreciate it even more when it's not present.
